Looks like a lovely walk. Just having a virtual look around and St. Andrews at Greensted claims to be the oldest wooden church in the world, with parts dating back to the sixth century. The area was home to the Tolpuddle Martyrs on their return to England and one of them married in the church. The cemetary also contains the grave of a twelfth century Crusader. Another one for my list!

There is a spitfire that takes off from North Weald, and blasts over the countryside flying at a low level.
Last year I was cycling up the hill from dial house up to the water tower at toot hill, and it zoomed over at what must have been only 200m or so above me. A great experience which made me feel like a wartime child.

Another lovely walk in Essex. I knew Toot Hill and Ongar well. Love the clear, frosty day.

A lovely crisp winter's day walk. The steam loco is a Gresley N2, a type synonymous with suburban London. They were generally fitted with condensing apparatus (the big pipe on the side) because they spent so much of their working life in tunnels. Sir Nigel Gresley is most famous for designing the streamlined A4 Pacific locomotives like the record breaking Mallard, but some think his true masterpiece was the ubiquitous N2.

I thought I’d seen most your your walks John but somehow have missed this one. Without doubt my new favorite.
We buried my dad at Greenacres Epping Forest, just south of North Weald Airfield. The steam train passes by on weekend if I’m lucky, when there. I’ve read that they kept that stretch of track operational to transport the government to the secret nuclear bunker at Kelevdon Hatch. I love your channel. Keep on walking. All the best John.

Along with all the others John thanks for a calming, shared walk. Used to live in Toothill (No. 20 Epping Road)......up until the age of about four. Remember walking to the top of a field that had a sort of moated pond around an 'island'. Was given to understand that Toothill got its name from the Germanic derived word for death 'Todt'. How true that is, I do not know but might explain the moated pond at the top of the field behind number 20. Idyllic childhood playing with the sand in the discarded 'coppers' previously used, along with the scrubbing board as clothes washing vessels. You will of course know about Banks Lane to the West, which is a continuation of part of a walk you have done on the roman road to Dunmow.
