First Walk of 2020 - Beyond King Harold's Tomb (4K)

- My first walk of 2020, and it seemed apt to start the new decade at the tomb of King Harold at Waltham Abbey. The aim of the walk was to climb a ridge of high land near Monkham's Hall that I've looked at many times. A comment on a previous video mentioned a First World War anti-aircraft gun emplacement on the hill near Kennel Wood - so that's where I headed. A truly magnificent start to the new year and the new decade.

Dear John
Thank you for sharing this beautiful walk with us particularly poignant for me as my Mum came from 'The Abbey' and sadly she died four years ago this month at the good old age of 96! Mum never lost her love of the place especially the Abbey Church and surrounds. I can remember walking there with her as a child back in the sixties, before the ring road, when you simply walked down beside the church along the river, visiting 'Harolds's Bridge' en route and out into the watermeadows below......... where she told tales of playing as a child and picking 'milk maids' ..............
According to my Mother the green space/gardens beside/behind the Abbey Church were used for growing watercress and used to supply 'half of London' back in the eighteen and early nineteen hundreds!
Have just checked via Google Books and 'The Saturday Magazine' volume 14/15 six acres 'are occupied by watercress'. Who knew?
Thanks again
Enjoy
Helen
Thanks for sharing that Helen - what great age to live to.
Born and bred in in Bristol Road E7 and left there in 1982. Your walks take me back like a sense of going home. The hours and hours I spent as a kid in the 50's on Wanstead Flats and in Epping forest was magical. Your walks bring back the same magic. More power to your elbow my friend and thank you so much for your great delivery and wonderful observations.
Born in forest Gate but moved to Waltham Abbey.. Two lovely places. 👍
It is us who thank you for taking us on yet another relaxing walk☕ 😊
My pleasure Kat
I second that.
Wonderful John. So many of your walks are places where I have lived and explored myself. I used to live a bit to the east of Galleywood Hill. I used to like walking up to that viewpoint. Another fantastic view overlooking the Lea Valley is just West of Gillwell Park, a short walk from Chingford Station.
thanks, I can't wait to get back out there once it's ok to use the trains. Also love that view from Gilwell Park - there's a couple of videos on here walking along that ridge
Another lovely walk, I hope you have a great year of walking, your videos are a true pleasure, and contain some very interesting history.
Thanks very much Nick
I love the way you "hymn" the River Lea. I was born at the Luton and Dunstable Hosptal just up the road from the source of the River Lea so I feel a particlar connection to it
Great stuff - thanks John
What a pleasure yet again to watch your first walk of 2020. Your infectious positivity is such a great start to this decade.
Thanks so much - there’s a great year ahead
Thanks John for another informative, beautifully and atmospherically shot film. Always appreciate your efforts and looking forward to the next
A lovely gift for starting this new decade, thanks again good Sir
My pleasure - all the best for the coming year
Looking forward to the new book!
Brilliant walk..alway enjoy my time watch this interesting man ...must go to Waltham abbey one day.
Thanks John, another great walk. As you say, a delightful way to start the new year/decade. Just thought you might like to know, although I own a kindle copy of This Other London and I have bought several paperback copies for friends, mostly living in London, I have never owned a physical copy of it. Last Saturday whilst browsing in WH Smith in Blyth, Northumberland I came across a hardback edition in the remainder bin for £2! I ‘m not sure if this is good for you, but for me it has made my week (at least).
Thanks for your support buying the book Jim - wonderful to hear the hardbacks are still out there and cropping up in Blyth as well. Always good for me if people are reading the book.
Thanks John -Have a Great 2020 ! -Love a Waltham Abbey walk -Cheers mate.
Thanks Ralph
Thanks for another fabulous walk for me to embark on John..Perhaps i should write a book called"In John Rogers Footsteps"haha!..Or maybe i should buy some maps,if i knew what to get..Or perhaps even buy a phone..I`m such a luddite..Anyway,thanks and happy new year!!
I like the sound of that book Stef. Try starting with an Ordnance Survey Map 174 of the Lea Valley and Epping Forest
Very nice! Further epic Lea Valley views over Clayton hill if you keep heading north up to Nazeing. But I'm sure you know that already :)
Thanks for that Mike and Sarah - I'll check the OS Map might be one I've missed
Talk of the Blue Streak missile makes me think you should head up my way - I'm a few minutes walk away from Aston (Stevenage), which was the site of Aston House. Became a research facility for the Special Operations Executive, the commanding officer was a contender for the inspiration of Ian Fleming's "Q". And it lies just off the River Beane, a tributary of the sacred River Lea.
John
I am really delighted to learn that your next book is coming soon. Your first book This other London was fantastic. I'm positive that all of the people who read your first book eagerly await your second. Fab film. Thanks. 👍
Thanks for the encouragement David
They managed to build a bad looking house just next to the abbey. Sad. Nice video. I find your videos very melancholic but engaging. I find London rather ugly (apart from certain areas/spots) but it is true there is a lot to discover and it is always nice and exciting getting lost in this big city. The London you show is the real London. I like the way you love it for what it is. Great work!
Thanks DS
I feel there should really be a film made about king Harold, one of England's greatest hero's ! He had quite an Homeric story.
A really interesting walk in part of the Lea valley I have not walked...yet! thanks for the education :)
my pleasure Denis glad you enjoyed it
How lovely to see that view again, I stumbled across it on one of my rambles up there. Amazing view. Feels rural. I especially enjoyed it as I’m stuck in the Royal Free recovering from op, been in bed two weeks itching to walk again. Wonderful medicine walking.... MICHAEL (Jean) Stride
Hope you make a speedy recovery and are back out there again soon Michael - all the best
you make your walks so interesting.what IF Harold had won
Well I've wondered that a few times, I think so much would be different today
The perfect video to finish a day
A super walk to start the year off with. Thank you.
My pleasure Dave - thanks for watching
New book. Great news. Look forward to it John even it is a while away yet. HNY.
Thanks Mouxbar - need to get my head down and finish it
Great walk, thank you John.
Thanks for watching Tim
Happy new year (and decade)! Lovely first walk, and can't wait for the new book.
cheers Matt
Lovely first walk of 2020 - and looking forward to the new book!
cheers Mariana - after editing this video I went back and read the chapters relating to this area and made me more determined than ever to get it out there
amazing what you can miss on your doorstep. will need to head up that way some time soon
highly recommended Ian
Hello John, nice to see you again.....
("The Discovery of our Holy Cross") or "Waltham Chronicle", relates that, in about 1016, the blacksmith at another estate belonging to Tovi, at Montacute near Glastonbury, found a large black flint (or marble) crucifix buried at the top of a hill, after a dream. Tovi had the cross loaded onto an ox-cart, but the oxen would only go in one direction and continued every day until they reached Waltham, a journey of some 150 miles. This Holy Rood or Cross was installed at the church and soon became the subject of pilgrimage. Tovi is said to have rebuilt the church, but modern evidence suggests that he probably retained the 8th-century fabric of the building.
really like this - I've walked around much of this area for quite a few years but never climbed the hill near the abbey. So maybe something to add to my lea river photo series
Highly recommended Hamish
Thanks John, I really must get to that ridge.
It's fantastic up there Richard, highly recommended
great video! thanks for showing us around. Looks like it is very cold in London.
Thanks Syed, it is a bit damp and chilly for sure, but I reckon Spring isn’t far away
Great start to 2020 John fantastic view towards London and the Thames happy new year to you
Thanks Paul
Great video John. Happy New year to you and your family
Thanks G.T
Brilliant vid, John!
Thank you
Aviation has developed quite significantly during WWI, so by the end of it the planes were quite advanced and Zepelins were rare
Thanks for that note
Great stuff as usual. Im just starting to do my own videos about painting in the street with a bit of history on top. I'm surprised how tricky and clumsy it feels. You make it look so smooth. Always a treat.
Thanks Liam - I find the walking helps with making the videos, the film-making has to come second to the walk itself so I have to just get on with it
@@JohnRogersWalks well it certainly works. As I say. Always a treat. I must remember that the painting always comes first.
GreaT Video John.
HappY 2020
A Year Of Clear GreaT ViSion.....
thanks James
It really was a magical walk- and video. I know those paths well- the views from that trig point are indeed stupendous And yes, the Greenwich Meridian Trail goes across that field before meeting the Lea. One thing that is intriguing me is- how muddy was it? I did my first walk of 2020 on 7 January through Ruislip Woods- it was six miles of ankle deep mud!
Thanks voxley - this walk wasn't too bad but my recent walks in Epping Forest have been like wading through a bog
Happy New Year!
Thanks John!
cheers Arthur
Happy New Year 2020!!!
Thanks john x
Dave
Thanks Dave
Happy New Year again to you John ☕😊
Thanks Kat
As always John another lovely video and a great start to 2020. I just wondered if you have ever made a video of thorndon park in brentwood. It also has some spectacular views across London. Bob.
Thanks Robert - I seemed to have missed Thorndon Park, thanks for the reminder, a few people have recommended it, I'll move it up the list
Best Wishes for New Year
By the look of the ring it was a large gun and probably used ww2 also..
I believe it was Chris, there’s a link in the description to some more info
Great video john
cheers Kim
Nice Trig point!
It’s a double thumbs up from me 👍👍
thanks Colin - much appreciated
Another enjoyable walk John. Glass of wine and a John Rogers You Tube documentary on a Sunday night. What could be better? Have you discovered the alternative description on the death of Harald in that he survived his wounds sustained at the battle of Hastings and continued his life whilst eventually living in the Hermitage in the City of Chester for seven years before he died? It is alleged that the Canons of Waltham were deceived as to the identity of the body buried at Waltham Abbey. It's all what makes the legends and myths of Britain. chester.shoutwiki.com/wiki/Hermitage
Lovely first walk of 2020 😊 Thank you for taking us along! Wonderful start to the next decade. Good luck on getting your book finished...any chance that it would be available to purchase in Canada? ...take care John! Looking forward to the next walk with you!
Thanks very much K - however the book is published I'll always sell them through my blog and ship to Canada
@@JohnRogersWalks That's great! 😊 Thanks for replying.
Do you ever come upon any Morris dancing on any of your walks?
Funny you should ask, a couple of times, once in Broadstairs and again in Greenwich- that’s in a video on here ‘Deptford Jack in the Green’
👍👍👍👍👍
Happy new year John. How did you cross Hooks Marsh? You rather left us dangling there!
Thank you. Ah yes, I did strike a diagonal line - the opening of my review of the year video was filmed as I crossed the Marsh
I'll have to go back and look. Reverse thinking and forward linking - I hadn't thought of that before, nice mental strategy. Mind you I'd have to have a detailed photographic memory to have recognised that meagre shot. Cheers.
Nice to see your in my neck of woods mate... a lot of history in and around Waltham abbey and cheshunt.. house I previously live at used to be a vicarage and school during 1930's aye drop me a message on Facebook vinnie-Alan mckenzie rowark will be happy to come along if your around these ways again good luck with future adventures
Many thanks - it's a fantastic area, always feel drawn back there when I've been away for a while
John, another great video. I think one day you and I will cross paths, haha. Here was the same view from one day before your walk:

that's a great shot Chris
I would love to watch some of these but the guy irritates me!!
