- Making climbing holds at home with every step covered. It's been a while since I made a video about climbing hold production and figured it was time for another one.
This is my first released video that covers mold making.
Below are some links to supplies you'll need to make your own climbing holds.

Perfect sign me up!
what do you use for adding color?
I would also like to know how you color them? I have been making some holds recently but putting paint into the resin seems to be interfering with the resins ability to harden properly.
Also Climber Dad they make buckets for pulling air pockets out of resin if you are interested. It might help solve the bubble issue for your edges. I'm not 100% sure though as I haven't tried it.
I buy color pigment from the supplier of the resin. I used to add a powdered pigment for concrete back in the 90s early 2000s when I used polyester resin.
Instead of carving, I plan on using SolidWorks to design the 3D CAD file. After the design, I was going to 3D print the prototype and then use silicone to create the mold from the prototype. What's your take on this process?
I think you'll have a hard time getting the texture right. Carving the block into the hold, revealing the shape that lives within is a major part of the joy I get within shaping. You might eant to give it a shot, both ways and see what works for you.
Thanks I made a small wall in the backyard last year and have bought 80 of the greatest chips holds so far. The kids love em but I want some character. This video will help make that happen! Thanks again!
You sir, are a legend
Shouldn't you use a respirator when pouring the resin?
Some resins are more toxic than others and you should follow the guidelines for that resin you are using. Standard procedure is just use a respirator.
If I'm doing larger volumes I always mask up and some stuff I only use masked up and outside.
Should I mask up every time?
Probably, I'm not perfect.
@@climberdad thanks for the reply. I just bought my first set of floral foam bricks and will be sourcing some silicone and resin in the near future. You're videos have been super helpful!
For the casting resin you've linked to, about how many holds could you make with those resin bottles?
Working on a video right now about that. Stay tuned.
If bubbles are a concern you could make a DIY vacuum chamber to degas the silicone
Will the hold be smooth? I mean how do you make sure it has a rough surface? Do you need to add sand to the mixture?
The texture of the foam will be the texture of the hold. Most shapers I know will use the foam density recommended in the description.
Climber Dad thank you so much for caring to answer promptly
Nice!... I wanna do this someday.... but I question the cost vs. Effectiveness for backyard woodies... make sense for a business, but how about a home owner?,... can you make a video for that?
It comes down to how much you value your time. Costs are pretty high with low volume. Maybe I'll need to do a Q and A session.
Hello again I just rewatch your video just to ask something I think is important. Is it the same to use measuring cups or a scale for resin, because Ive seen videos that recommend using cups because of the viscosity of each part of the resin, is actually any difference? Thank you
It depends in the resin. Some say by weight and others say by volume. I've found that Alumilite RC3 and Amazing White works best if done by volume, measuring cups, even though it says it can be done by either weight or volume.
@@climberdad thanks for answering, you have been very helpful with your videos and responses. I'll check what's best for my resin brand.... and yes, about RC3 Aluminate, I bought couple of gallons few days ago, I'm waiting for them to arrive. Thanks!
great video!!! I just made a bouldering wall in my house amd made a bunch of wooden holds but this is excellent to get creative...also subbed to your channel
what kind of resin did you use?
This is a magikast by rawmaterialsuppliers. It's not the best as far as strength goes but it still works pretty well and I haven't had any chip or break. RC-3 from Alumilite has better numbers.

Man your videos are just.. amazing.
how much resin did you pour on that mold? aprox. thank you
What about 3d printing instead of foam carving?
If you could get the texture right, sure.
A few important points with 3d printing holds. Use lots of perimeters to make sure its strong. After its done I heat it up with a heat gun until the outside is soft and then press a low grit sandpaper into the surface to give it texture. Also if you tighten it too much to the wall it can crack so keep that in mind.
@@sterlinghamiltonracing6487 where do you find models to print from? How are you getting specs?
Geoffrey Westerlund thingiverse is the best place to get models but I usually try and make my own.
Nice Video I would love to try to make some pockets
I have a big problem. The foam absorbs the silicone. Because? the foam is identical to yours. The one for flowers ... :(
Completely or just on the surface? Normally I need to break the foam model out and clean the mold well. I've never had it absorb into the foam.
Try using a mold release agent.
@@climberdad completly ... :( but i think it is a green foam problem.
Check and see if it's the "wet" floral foam, if so that's why. Get some that's marked dry floral foam :)
@@climberdad I changed foam and solved. :)
the first two molds came out perfect ... many thanks !
Awesome!
Great Video as always! Interesting, Real and Inspiring.
Great process! Great tips! Will be doing my own soon.
