I've just been singing this to a same key instrumental on RUclips. It's quite difficult to hit the high notes. Respect to bono considering his voice will have changed considerably since the eighties when it was released.
Maybe the greatest lyricist of all….vocals unmatched….the whole band an incredible event.
Memories that make history, greatest tour ever, even zoo TV was a huge one too. Also with PULSE biggest tours ever.
I can't say whether this is the best thing they've ever written (as 'Slug' and 'Your Blue Room' from their Passengers album are amazing creations), but I can say it's my favourite song of theirs, and had a profound impact on me, when I first heard it as an 11 year old boy. Just magic, so ethereal and utterly beguiling.

I saw them on the UF tour in the 80’s. This is one song they did better live back then.

Bono sings, "If the mountains shall crumble, or disappear into the sea, not a tear, no not I". Check out Psalm 45 verse 3; "Therefore we will not fear, when the earth shall be troubled; and the mountains shall be removed into the heart of the sea." That would be Psalm 46 according to the newer numbering system.
But don't miss the crucifixion imagery and the Psalm 63 reference in the previous verse, either.

Strong winds didn’t let the screen come down during this song as it always would do.
Out of any song of theirs that has unfortunately had to be scrapped(or perhaps transposed down) due to Bono’s unfortunate vocal issues, this is the one that breaks my heart the most. This song is such a masterpiece in so many ways. So it’s a shame they can’t play it very much anymore.
Bono's "unfortunate vocal issues" is in layman terms called getting older. He was in his early to mid 20s when he first performed that song. Probably at least late 40s here? Father time catches up to us eventually.
@@artlover1477False. It’s not “layman’s term for getting older“. He fried his voice by the end of the 90s from non-stop touring, chain-smoking, and improper technique. Because of all that, he ruptured polyps on his vocal cords. It was completely avoidable. It was around the time they begin to transpose their songs and he had to change his singing style to preserve his voice.. So it wasn’t just about getting older.
Love the song, I don't think I've really ever heard him sing this song well live though. I'm no vocalist, but I imagine it's a hard one to hit those high notes at any age.
