By chance I listened to chet baker for the first time today.....it's been 6 hours I'm still watching the live concerts....I even watched the biography....I'm speechless to say the least
This was me last week. I never heard of him until the second to last week of July 2022. I haven't stopped listening to his different performances since.
OMG!!!! Me too! Although I’m about 2 hours in. Never heard of him before. Why has anyone ever told me about him before? So weird to think we both just popped our Chet cherry! Haha! Edit; apologies I thought it said it was posted 3 hours ago!
Every time Chet looks like he's gonna crash and die, He comes out with the most amazing playing. They say cats have 9 lives, but some jazz cats have many more than that. Love you Chet. RIP, you are free.
Thanks for that, Chet would have loved all that, don't know about the 'cats: though - he was rather partial to dogs Nice post God Bless❤ Greetings from the sunny Costa Blanca Spain.
Chet's tone is just always killer; and so is his voice. Both have that airy whispery thing - I don't know how else to describe it but there's nobody else that sounds like him. A total legend.
The alto sax player is the young Bob Mover who is till active these days in NYC. He plays with Esperanza Spalding cuurently. huge horn player and great teacher.
Francisco Gonçalves Chet got tossed out a second floor window in 1988. Another drug deal gone bad. Check out the movie Born to be Blue with Ethan Hawke playing Chet. Great movie.

Arthur Smith Chet wasn't tossed out the window, he was alone that fateful day and high on everything he was able to get his hands on. He either committed suicide or probably thought he could fly.
In my humble opinion for my taste personally Chet is the best of all trumpet players, his music is so moving and soothing,i haven't been listening to him for too long but could tell he had played a bit of Trombone in his youth because of his lower register and that's what i like about him,i used to listen to Dizzy and Lee Morgan a lot but i find Chet's music more free and relaxing for my taste and not to mention his vocals wow the man could sing like an angel, may he rest i peace and thank you for your great music Chet.
You can see Chet is still re-learning his embouchure here; after the incident where his teeth were severely damaged. He always sounds amazing though. What he is able to play speaks volumes.
To all Chet Baker's fans. You also can enjoy the magnificent performance of Chet "Concierto de Aranjuez" with Paul Desmond, Jim Hall,Ron Carter, Steve Gadd & Roland Hanna. Enjoy listening this wonderful music....again Cheers to all jazz fanatics. From New Orleans the city of jazz and the "cajun" food.
I am certain we have crossed paths during one of many Jazz Festivals around the world. Wish I could have gone to Birdland when all the great innovators were still alive.
13:15 Chet blows a short amazing solo, so intense! Just like an hologram, there is all the art of soloing here: melodic flow, a great long "bop" line and a "mistake" that brings to a unexpected end in just one chorus! Thank you Chet.
My fellow CB affectionados: See the Chet Baker documentary, 'Let's get Lost'. It is a bittersweet glimse of this talented man, his music and the family he left too soon. Truly unforgettable footage. Luv those chisled features!
Ronette, I saw the film's World Premiere in San Francisco 25 years ago with my girlfriend, Antoinette. It is an experience I will never forget. "Blame it on My Youth"
Greetings! Lucky you... just to see that film on the big screen had to be an unforgettable experience! I saw 'Let's Get Lost' about 10 years ago on a PBS special and it was a truly deep and moving experience for me. This man had so much raw talent and worked with the best of the best musicians. There's a truth that comes across in his music and performances. I believe he has a bigger fan base today than ever before. Chet Baker has left an indelible mark in this genre and we thank him.
I had noticed that, Steve; recently during an upgrade it was cited to me that I could watch YT on my large flat-screen via DirecTV "Extra's" so that was quite an experience; they also give you Pandora - all of it free, too!
Dave Shapiro....without a doubt one of the greatest bass players ever. He'll walk you out the door in 2 bars. Anyone who wants to play this instrument needs to listen to Dave. The ultimate lesson in how to play jazz on the bass.
WOW! What a treasure trove of Chesney's treasures can be found here - esp. in a great setting when Chet was just a few years into his comeback which is chronicled on the (recently remastered 40th Anniversary) CTI LP "She Was Too Good To Me." They all were, my man Chet - but not one of them has a single regret. Rest easy.
Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful music...I am a "JAZZ" fanatic since I was 15 years old in a little City the Island of Calbuco (South Chile). Now I live in the city of jazz New Orleans.(My husband career).Due to this "media" I can listen and enjoy this wonderful musician. Thanks again.
You are in the home of Jazz del4297. Lucky you. I am too a jazz fan since birth for my Dad was a Jazz pianist back in Manila, Philippines. I enjoy RUclips as you do.
I would say they got different playing styles? Both are my favorite players, but with different reasons. Miles told me how to be calm and cool in playing, and Chet taught me how to hide my tear and sadness in the trumpet sound..
I ve the greatest respect for person like the late Cheney Henry Baker he was a great trumpet jazz player and to think about his back ground and how he waisted his life away its very sad but still enjoy listening beautiful sounds of his music. He died a legend
Such a talent..I tell friends that he is one of two musicians who I feel could "speak" through their instrument. I do have to be in a very strong state of mind anymore to listen to his music because his life was so tragic....Yet he is just one of the best who ever played an instrument in my opinion....
Excellent musicianship, great sound and all is good. To bad he had to go. Thank you very, very much for posting this. Am enjoying this, along with everything else of Chet Baker, that I can find on youtube or anywhere else. Smooth or Cool jazz just doesn't get any better. He was and still is, the King of Cool jazz. RIP Chet!
This guy was great, despite the heroine. I love his very faint voice, almost inaudible opposed to the brilliance of the trumpet. It's worth reading a few things about Chat Baker but above all you should hear it.
Dig the shades. More Trumpeters would benefit taking a page from Chet Baker's tone and lyricism.. and Kenny Dorham for that matter. Great vid. This band is swingin.
Bob Mover - alto sax? Where has this guy been hiding? Is he still around? Marvelous! As for Chet - did he ever play a wrong note? If he did - it was always the right note. And as for his singing - just a whisper in the wind...every singer - other than the late great Frank Sinatra - should have taken lessons in singing from Chet. Never in the field of music have so many owed so much to the one and only Chet!!!!
Bob is still around and hanging in there. An absolutely brilliant musician who has never received the recognition he deserves. Here's a link to an interview with him. ruclips.net/video/Qi3QN4v08_c/видео.html

Now, you’re officially cool.

Yeah in my opinion some of his best music came from one of the lowest points in his life which was in the early and mid 1960s.
ah chet baker and billie holiday, party time for the wanna be intellectuals
Thanks for that, Chet would have loved all that, don't know about the 'cats: though - he was rather partial to dogs

Nah, I can barely read; just enjoy jazz.@@barrygol7146
He was like his contemporary Bill Evans…. Too much talent is hard too handle, for sensitive souls…

He is impressive indeed!
Amo Chet Baker. Um brinde a boa música.
Right on 😊
Been listening to chet since 73... can not believe it has been 50yrs. His music 🎶 is timeless ...
Back when when being cool was still cool.
It still is, only no one is.

Just Magnificent Recently started to listen to jazz Wonderful So sad to see his life journey A treasure lost along with so many others

Couldn´t agree more. There may be greater trumpet players than Chet, but he´s a healing force like nobody else. This is magic.
His voice was already gone here but in the 50s and early to mid 60s he sounded great
Bob Mover is a FABULOUS alto player!!!
Bickerstaffe you old so-and-so, how the hell ya been?!?!
You can see Chet is still re-learning his embouchure here; after the incident where his teeth were severely damaged. He always sounds amazing though. What he is able to play speaks volumes.

Agreed, a wonderful and sometimes sad film. Beautifully filmed and shows Chet warts and all. One of the best always stayed with me.

Absolute masterpiece, where there is the immense soul between notes and words ...
0:50 one of the greatest lines ever.
