I got Infinite Painter based off your videos and I love it. Procreate is great, but I agree, it's all about the brushes. I've been using both IP and procreate a lot for the past few months, for me I like IP's brush engine more, and I love the three finger shortcut for chaning brush size
I'm also coming from Photoshop and found Artstudio Pro a much better experience. The brush import works great and the brushes can be used pretty much straight away. The whole menu system isn't the quickest, but at least you know where to look when you need something. I agree, the color picker should be dockable. Some people also want a Warp tool, which I admit would be nice. Although the Liquify tool works very well in Artstudio Pro as well. I love the option to change the brush size and flow by just moving the thumb (wish the direction would be switched though, so that up/down changes the size). But all that aside. Prefer Artstudio as well. Too bad they haven't got as big a community as Procreate.

it’s as u said, it depends on the artist need and style. One of the earliest digital artists started with a mouse and his did awesome work with it. P.S. I love your videos Adam
as an artist who came from paint tool sai which was a god of blending, procreate just killed my style. I had to stop using it for a long time bc I just couldnt handle the brushes it just feels so fake and hard to use. It literally gave me an art block, Like, i really love procreate and how clean the ui is but i literally have to modify brushes every damn day to satisfy my needs whereas in the desktop i had like 3 brushes i use. Medibang has a better brush engine (in terms of feel anyway, they lack painting brushes) and it feels more comfy to just...sketch and do quick things there. i really really hate procreate brushes with a passion, and im glad to see someone pointing it out
I agree about Affinity Photo on the iPad. I tried really hard for about a month to be open minded and learn it, but every time I opened the app I felt like I was learning the user interface for the first time. I eventually gave up.
I only just watched this video but I have been so frustrated with my ipad until now. I thought it was simply a learning curve that I had to get through, but no. Artstudio is the answer.
If I could combine the intuitiveness and transparency of Procreate, with the brushes in Infinity, and add workable vector, without the Adobe tax, then that would be ideal. I think that I’m clutching at straws here, but that’s where we are. Maybe Apple could build a creative hub, where all these apps are accessible from, so you aren’t moving things from app to app. There is a writing app called Drafts, where you can do a lot of processing and editing, etc, for writing, and perhaps something like this for visual arts would be ideal.
@@AdamDuffArt I searched with a search engine and found no answer if or how this would be possible. I then asked ChatGPT: "Can an iPad app be designed that allows you to use different tools from different art apps all in one place?"-a thorough answer in seconds. Can't quickly confirm its accuracy, but it *sounds* right. It ended with "Overall, designing such an app would require a significant amount of development effort..." I'll wait till next month and ask chatGPT to build it. By then it should be able to do so :)
I felt lime I was the weird one for so long. I got an ipad pro got procreate and was like ....okay... Everyone raves and raves about it. It's good, there is a lot to love. The brushes though.
Very helpful video, Really like infinite Painter and Procreate and glad I chose ipad over mobile studio pro. A possible future video with recommendations for Ipad accessories like stands, styluses, and cases would be most helpful too. Trying to figure out what case to get for plein air digital painting and there are so many options. Thanks again! :)
I am ArtRage/Tayasui sketch user but have used Infinite Painter recently and fell in love with it. It's super powerful. Yes it does have crash issue but it's not that often or hardly ever. I just have a problem with liquify recently. Cause it works on my note 10 but not on my S6. I tweeted them about it and they fixed it. So I love how fast the support team responded. I usually use ArtRage for my hyper realistic stuff. But I was surprised that I can accomplish that on Infinite Painter. So I'm using Infinite Painter more now. My friend recommended me clip studio but yea that is definitely not for my type of art. I know it's super good for manga and illustrations. But yea it's a hard no. Well I keep it if I want to use the animation feature since infinite painter doesn't have it.
Hi Adam... can I give you a little constructive critisism? Turn the autofocus off your camera; your face is constantly going out of focus when you move your hands in front of the lens. I haven't watched you before but you're eloquent and a great communicator. I'm old and want to try something new so bought myself a pencil and I was going to give Procreate a try but you may have swung me in a different direction now... Thanks!
Thanks for this vid as well, loved the deeper dive into Infinity Painter recently, which is one I picked up ages ago and set aside because Procreate was (and still is) my main drawing app and with the 5th iteration, more or less all I need with the brush arsenal I've amassed. But Infinity painter has some -really- nice features that serve some really important Quallity of Life functions in a drawing app. Things like a pen tool, extensive warp options, etc etc. Procreate is writing the book on how to approach minimalism in a fully touch interface overall I think but, they're slow to release tools (which I understand sits well with the long time users and adheres to their arguably intuitive design philosophy and approach - cant beat that really easy to talk to support team too) Paint Storm Pro, yeah, it's a yikes when you first open that thing. I could never get the lower left hand buttons to disappear when toggled, and scaling the UI elements made them jump to odd places etc etc, seemed more of a hassle than anything else. Thanks for these vids, also enjoying the artbook reviews!
You should try IArtbook Pro - it has great blending brushes, thumb gestures support, has low battery usage, it is easy to use and has dockable color wheel, fav brushes and other panels
Thanks for the information. Yes we are all so different. On my desktop I sketch in sketchbook pro which I love but I hate it on the ipad, so frustrating. I am so glad you mentioned your hesitancy with procreate. I struggle with sketching in it. I don't care how many pencils I got, it wasn't as good as the sketchbook pro experience to me. I definitely like artstudio pro more and sketched in it until Fresco. Now, I use the pencil in Adobe Fresco which for whatever reason works for me and color in procreate and artstudio pro.
And now art studio has got all that good stuff you were talking about. Glad im not the only one who doesnt like procreate . I use to like it lol but now im purely on art studio
I have tried so many apps but Artstudio Pro is my favorite. it has a very good brush engine and in beta versions they have added a color wheel as well. and I don't like procreate.. there brushes don't feel like very natural. they just smudge color not mixing well. But Artstudio Pro is awesome
It's an endlessly recommended app - I do feel it's geared more towards line artists. I'll definitely be looking into it moving forward, just haven't given it a good shot yet.
Adam Duff LUCIDPIXUL Thanks for your Infinite Paint review! It’s very informative! I myself more into creating manga, so Clip Studio Paint is my favourite drawing app. The only thing I don’t like is the pricing X( I hate the subscription based payment. I would rather if it is one off payment. Can Infinite Paint used for creating comic too?
I love procreate, I have all my favorite brushes and my workflow settings perfectly organized for me, an it’s amazing, really serious app for professional work. I’m now trying to expand to some apps for some vector and more layers possibilities, but I’m so frustrated for others apps brushes settings and the lack of fingers commands I’m used to it for Procreate. Any procreate user could help?
"Too bad everything else sucks about Fresco"; I'd really love to hear you elaborate on this. I'm not saying that I'm a fanboy; I'm currently trying out different apps, and that's why I'm watching this video. My first impression of Fresco was positive, so that's why I'm interested.
Interesting info; I use Sketchbook Pro and Procreate , haven’t used Infinite Painter in a while. I may have to reacquaint myself with some of your suggestions.
I'll have to try art studio. Infinite painter felt good to work in, but the performance was bunk and it's a bit of a memory hog last I tried it. I like procreate, but not for the brush simulation. I agree the whole brush engine is clunky and weird. Makes painter on the PC/Mac feel easy to use LOL! I like Procreate for the speed of large brushes and resource usage though. Going to try art studio next as I've heard a few people say the latest updates really improved the ease of use.
I LOVE Infinite Painter, and it's the app I use, but they have a REAL problem with stability and file corruption, it's been rough for years now, I don't know if I do too many layers or something, but it happened a lot along the years for me.
I tried everything; procreate, affinity, autodesk sketch, fresco, painter, what else? Guess what I use in the end.... Notes! Best f-ing feeling of pencil out there. No other app can compare to it. Makes me wish Apple to develop a full drawing app. Seriously, try it.
i immediately liked your video the second you said you don't like procreate. lol.. i keep trying to like it but i can't =/ i do like their stacking feature, though. makes filing neat.. and i agree with the importance of the brush. i also came from desktop photoshop. clip studio was great, but it keeps freezing up on the ipad pro for me now, like they're neglecting the ios side of it 😢.. and that's why i'm here.
I hope I didn't give that impression - it's definitely good for more than JUST line - but compared to other apps that are more focused on the "painting" side of things, I tend to gravitate more towards them in painting situations.
ios sketch book has a) the best assisted pencil and b) the worst rotate/scale transform. Please bring the desktop transform tool to ios! Is this app still under development?
@@anzatzi you are right about rotate and scale feature, it drives me nuts 80 % of the time. What do you mean app in development? Dont you know that it is completely functional software? why would it be still in development? They just release patches, i dont pay attention them however.

Funny I never liked procreate much even though it's obviously amazing. Will give version 5 a proper go though. Artstudio pro is top notch on both iPad and desktop because of the metal accelerated brush engine, but it desparately needs a dockable colour panel.
The only one that seems to show up on android is infinite painter do you have anything else that will work on android tablets or smart phones. I'm trying to turn my old some what new tablet into an art tablet. I have a usb hub with usb in HDMI out dongle to view what my screen is showing from my tablet. Any suggestions?
I start some weeks ago and I was emocionated for procrate (the reason why I buy the ipad), then I see your videos and meet art studio pro... I must tell that even with the demo in the last one... I prefer it better than procrate because of the brushes.
Regarding your videos about infinity paint and this one: I had to replay each video several times to catch the app names. For example infinity paint sounded like ----- paint until I was able to understand you were softly and quickly saying infinity. New to your channel.which I enjoy. Sorry to complain.
12:22 exact thing which i was thinking about the brushes. there soooooooooooooo many and i don't have the time to try them all! i have to create designs fast. i don't have the time for a design for example when it takes many days to create because i have to search after many brushes.
Affinity Photo isn’t the most expensive since it’s a one-time purchase. Not that it’s the best or anything, but $20 and you’re done. Photoshop is an ongoing subscription like Clip Studio.
Good video but : There is something I don't understand : Affinity Photo ?? Try Affinity Designer then ^^ And expensive ?? For someone who uses PS every day , paying 25 $ ONCE shouldn't be a problem ^^ As for Paintstorm , I totally agree with you : lots of potential but crashes too often... good to know , the same studio has realised Realistic Paint Studio, very nice to play with .
Hi, first of all what a great video i love it, and i just want to come back on the procreate side i was exactly like you i got the beta for procreate 5 i try to import my photoshop brushes or even my procreate 4 brushes and they was completly unusable but i retry on the official version of procreate 5 and everything worked amazingly well ^^
I hate procreate for not providing custom key shortcuts and a mode where theres no limit on layers I don’t mind a bit of lag , but have to give it to the ui designer, its an perfect example of apple mindset
That’s so funny I hate photoshop brushes and love procreate brushes- and I worked in photoshop for decades and have only used procreate for a couple years now
Definitely clip art cause it's specifically built for that. And in my friend art discord server...everyone ther pretty much draw anime ...they all use it. Medibang is good for manga too I heard. I'm the black sheep there... Cause I can't draw a person at all...I can draw stick figure 😅
Really surprised Clip Studio Paint is not on here. Six month free trial if you haven't tried it yet. More expensive, yes but it blows all these apps out of the water, in my opinion. You talk about an app being customizable, you will not find an app that is more customizable than this, probably ever, seriously. Check Daub Brushes for Clip Studio, well worth the investment. I could go and on, but as I said 6 month free trial, RUclips Clip Studio Ipad Customize to customize the UI how you want. Some tips from me, you can create your own tool groups, duplicate them first just incase, and put them in a new group, customize the settings, save as default. Every single tool you want to do this with, you can do it to. You want a certain font, size, edge to be default, done, move tool that duplicates, done, symmetry 2x 3x 4x done, etc. The command bar at the top is equally customizable. When you make a selection, which I do constantly, even that bar is customizable, allowing you to add to it. Theres a sub view feature that takes pictures you have saved, including your own work, and shows it when you click on it, allowing you to COLOR PICK from it! Ive set up a bunch of different color palettes from the net, saved them in a single file, or create your own, zoom in, out etc. I'm quite OCD, so I've really customized the UI, even changing the icons for the tools, brushes etc that i use, to these grungy looking icons, it looks sweet. All that being said, I really do miss Photoshop's layer styles, and I do prefer Procreates liquify over CSP, even though that is mostly for making really random looking "abstract" art. I know this was long, but dude, once you know how to use this app, it'll be well worth the read lol, goodluck.
Scrobin Ja Clip Studio might be good but I will never, ever pay a subscription to use an app. What if they decide to remove the service or raise the price? An app is like an instrument, you invest time learning how to use it, why would you put it in someone else’s control as to whether you can use it or not? It would also have to be sooooo much better when Infinite Painter, Procreate, Art Studio, Affinity are £10 and Clip Studio is £20-£56 PER YEAR! Just no.
Hello, apologies for the long message, and sorry if I am dragging down the level of the conversation here. But what app would you recommend for an absolute beginner who wants to learn “photoshopping” (if I were to use the generic meaning beyond the app itself, but in its complete sense) on his iPad. If that makes sense. I just need to get out of research mode, commit to an app and start learning. But Affinity won’t run properly on my old iPad and Photoshop itself is too expensive. So till I get a new iPad what can I use. Do advise. Is Art Studio Pro the way to go. Infinite Painter? Something else? P.S. I don’t mind the odd crash here and there as I will upgrade sooner rather than later. Thanks, great video.
My biggest gripe of them all is the canvas size. Is there one app that allows a canvas of 24x36 with a DPI of 300? Wait...with unlimited layers. What if I wanted to design a subway poster (40x60)? In order to compete 100% with desktops programs, that is the proverbial elephant in the room.
I have procreate but I'm really starting not to like it for the reason of not having a actual blending tool or gradient tool. The smudge brush is a pain 😡
Just spent half my life learning ProCreate and working on my next project on that... Artstudio Pro will have to wait for now, but will definitely give it a try Q2 2020
Affinity Photo & Designer are my favorites, but Procreate & Infinite Painter are a close 2nd because they’re so simple. The rest aren’t user friendly to me.
i tried infinite painter and was instantly sold, it just fits my workflow so well when i'm painting and the brushes are *chef's kiss*

it’s as u said, it depends on the artist need and style. One of the earliest digital artists started with a mouse and his did awesome work with it.
P.S. I love your videos Adam
Oh god! Mouse art!!
Those were dark days Sekkat.
Thank you :)
“Happy new year” 2020-if you had any idea then what was coming down the road🤣
as an artist who came from paint tool sai which was a god of blending, procreate just killed my style. Medibang has a better brush engine (in terms of feel anyway, they lack painting brushes) and it feels more comfy to just...sketch and do quick things there.
i really really hate procreate brushes with a passion, and im glad to see someone pointing it out
Love your videos bro! Found a couple really good apps for my iPad through your channel!
Oh awesome! I'm happy I helped :)
Thank you this was verrrry helpful💙💙💙💙
I agree about Affinity Photo on the iPad. I tried really hard for about a month to be open minded and learn it, but every time I opened the app I felt like I was learning the user interface for the first time. I eventually gave up.
I only just watched this video but I have been so frustrated with my ipad until now. I thought it was simply a learning curve that I had to get through, but no. Artstudio is the answer.
Soooo … for you, Art Studio Pro or Infinite Painter, which is the best out of the 2?
If I could combine the intuitiveness and transparency of Procreate, with the brushes in Infinity, and add workable vector, without the Adobe tax, then that would be ideal. I think that I’m clutching at straws here, but that’s where we are. Maybe Apple could build a creative hub, where all these apps are accessible from, so you aren’t moving things from app to app. There is a writing app called Drafts, where you can do a lot of processing and editing, etc, for writing, and perhaps something like this for visual arts would be ideal.
Graham - that’s genius! I’d encourage you to make a move on that idea instead of waiting for someone else to monopolize on it
@@AdamDuffArt I searched with a search engine and found no answer if or how this would be possible.
Infinite painter is definitly underrated.
:) agreed
It's veryyy good.
Me still happy with Ibis paint X 😂❤️
Hands down the best when comes to beginner friendly
Hi Adam... can I give you a little constructive critisism?
Procreate is writing the book on how to approach minimalism in a fully touch interface overall I think but, they're slow to release tools (which I understand sits well with the long time users and adheres to their arguably intuitive design philosophy and approach - cant beat that really easy to talk to support team too)
Paint Storm Pro, yeah, it's a yikes when you first open that thing.
I absolutely love iArtbook pro imho knocks spots of Procreate. Admittedly am a very keen user of Artstudio Pro too.
I'm switching from traditional to digital art and just want to know what app is best for a beginner
Happy New Year, and thank you for the video!
I have tried so many apps but Artstudio Pro is my favorite. it has a very good brush engine and in beta versions they have added a color wheel as well. and I don't like procreate.. there brushes don't feel like very natural. they just smudge color not mixing well. But Artstudio Pro is awesome
Surprised you didn't mention Clipstudio Paint, have you tried it, by the way?
It's an endlessly recommended app - I do feel it's geared more towards line artists. I'll definitely be looking into it moving forward, just haven't given it a good shot yet.
Adam Duff LUCIDPIXUL Thanks for your Infinite Paint review! It’s very informative! I myself more into creating manga, so Clip Studio Paint is my favourite drawing app. The only thing I don’t like is the pricing X( I hate the subscription based payment. I would rather if it is one off payment. Can Infinite Paint used for creating comic too?
Great video! Although it would have been nice to see some screenshots or use case gifs from what you were talking about. Thankyou Adam
My first impression of Fresco was positive, so that's why I'm interested.
in my opinion if you are already advanced designer than you should install many great apps for designs.
If you do like watercolor on Fresco try Rebelle 3 on PC or Mac. That is real watercolor
Really! I’ll check it out, thank you!
Artstudio pro is my super favourite app
Procreate fans in the comments are crying.
Interesting info; I use Sketchbook Pro and Procreate , haven’t used Infinite Painter in a while. I may have to reacquaint myself with some of your suggestions.
clip studio is my favorite!
Same!
D best
@@artofdavedy4541 I completely agree with you!
Nothing beats CS
Why didn't you review Corel Painter? They really work hard on their programs.
What is your device?
Please review Affinity Designer (a pixel/vector app).
I tried everything; procreate, affinity, autodesk sketch, fresco, painter, what else? Guess what I use in the end.... Notes! Best f-ing feeling of pencil out there. No other app can compare to it. Makes me wish Apple to develop a full drawing app. Seriously, try it.
Great video man :O
Hugely - and that’s why I love Infinite Painter - I feel it has a positive influence on my painting style
i immediately liked your video the second you said you don't like procreate. lol.. i keep trying to like it but i can't =/ i do like their stacking feature, though. makes filing neat.. and i agree with the importance of the brush. i also came from desktop photoshop. clip studio was great, but it keeps freezing up on the ipad pro for me now, like they're neglecting the ios side of it 😢.. and that's why i'm here.
Thats odd, i just created drawing/painting of creature in sketcbook pro and everything turned out fine. Why this software is for lineart only?
I hope I didn't give that impression - it's definitely good for more than JUST line - but compared to other apps that are more focused on the "painting" side of things, I tend to gravitate more towards them in painting situations.
alright, i guess for beginner like me its fine.
ios sketch book has a) the best assisted pencil and b) the worst rotate/scale transform. Please bring the
desktop transform tool to ios! Is this app still under development?
@@anzatzi you are right about rotate and scale feature, it drives me nuts 80 % of the time. What do you mean app in development? Dont you know that it is completely functional software? why would it be still in development? They just release patches, i dont pay attention them however.
@@eterno1610 By 'under development' I receiving updates. Autodesk added the 3 point curve tool after the app went free, but I am not sure they are still workng on it
I wonder how you feel about Procreate now, three years later.
I use it exclusively now. It’s fantastic for me. How do u like it?
Have you tried affinity designer? I have it and it looks more like illustrator, I think affinity photo is more like Lightroom so not for drawing haha
I do not like Procreate brushes. I honestly think Medibang's brush engine is better for drawing and inking
Funny I never liked procreate much even though it's obviously amazing. Will give version 5 a proper go though. Artstudio pro is top notch on both iPad and desktop because of the metal accelerated brush engine, but it desparately needs a dockable colour panel.
Affinity app is for ever or only for versión 1 like the pc program?
The only one that seems to show up on android is infinite painter do you have anything else that will work on android tablets or smart phones. I'm trying to turn my old some what new tablet into an art tablet. I have a usb hub with usb in HDMI out dongle to view what my screen is showing from my tablet. Any suggestions?
No clue personally - I never worked on an android - that said, I’m sure Brad Colbow has a video about it, he’s the all-knowing guru of art tech.
@@AdamDuffArt Thanks I'll go check it out.
Idk man for me it doesn’t get more complicated than PS. You should give Clip Studio a try. They have a 6 month free trial.
Great video!
Clip studio omission is understandable only because your a painter, not an inker
Bad ass video thanks for the info !
Affinity Photo isn’t the most expensive since it’s a one-time purchase. Not that it’s the best or anything, but $20 and you’re done. Photoshop is an ongoing subscription like Clip Studio.
Good video but :
There is something I don't understand : Affinity Photo ??
Try Affinity Designer then ^^
And expensive ?? For someone who uses PS every day , paying 25 $ ONCE shouldn't be a problem ^^
As for Paintstorm , I totally agree with you : lots of potential but crashes too often... good to know , the same studio has realised Realistic Paint Studio, very nice to play with .
Hi, first of all what a great video i love it, and i just want to come back on the procreate side i was exactly like you i got the beta for procreate 5 i try to import my photoshop brushes or even my procreate 4 brushes and they was completly unusable but i retry on the official version of procreate 5 and everything worked amazingly well ^^
Very good to know! I'll definitely take that into consideration.
Sketchbook 👍
I think it’s hilarious that you spelled it “Painstorm”.....
i use procreate all the time for digital painting
maybe because i don't work on ps that much but procreate works perfect for me
I hate procreate for not providing custom key shortcuts and a mode where theres no limit on layers I don’t mind a bit of lag , but have to give it to the ui designer, its an perfect example of apple mindset
Thumb up, first of all for the statement of constantly learning - bro ;-) (it's more than pro)
Could you remake this for 2022?
Very informative.
That’s so funny I hate photoshop brushes and love procreate brushes- and I worked in photoshop for decades and have only used procreate for a couple years now
So what apps would you suggest the most for manga style art work (such as vagabond,Vinland Saga, berserk,Kengan asura or one punch man) ?
Definitely clip art cause it's specifically built for that. And in my friend art discord server...everyone ther pretty much draw anime ...they all use it. Medibang is good for manga too I heard.
I'm the black sheep there... Cause I can't draw a person at all...I can draw stick figure 😅
i know you talk about apps on iPad, but have you tried Adobe Fresco on Windows?
I haven’t actually - didn’t even know it existed, I’ll check it out right away!
Just no.
clip studio paint is (was... since they decided to destroy their user trust two days ago) great for pc, but its too cluttered on ipad i think
What do you think about ArtSet?
Hey Adam Im wondering if there is a way to use gradient maps on Art Studio pro, Infinity Painter, or Procreate?
procreate is alright, i just don't like how i can't expand my selection. also, i just wanna be able to make shapes
I really needed this. Procreate is starring to get boring
How about Adobe Fresco?
Ain’t the Concepts best app for sketching drawing?
I feel very much like an alien now.
Dude srsly? Even medibang has those!
Just spent half my life learning ProCreate and working on my next project on that... Artstudio Pro will have to wait for now, but will definitely give it a try Q2 2020
i don't like procreate too. because of that streamline brush feature.
Affinity Photo & Designer are my favorites, but Procreate & Infinite Painter are a close 2nd because they’re so simple. The rest aren’t user friendly to me.
