I sailed on the Leonardo in 1964, between my junior and senior year of medical school, on my way to Italy to visit family. It was a beautiful ship and I made some wonderful friends along the way. I also sailed on the Saturnia and Vulcania when I was much younger. Later, I crossed on the Michaelangelo and Rafaello. All Italian Line. All beautiful ships, great food, beautiful appointments, wonderful service. Thank you for posting this lovely video. Brought back treasured memories. John Alifano
I sailed to Genoa on this ship in the late spring of 1964. I was a child so watching this film in the perspective of young boys was very provacative and meaningful. Those were the days...
I sailed on the Leonardo Da Vinci in 1967, when I was 9 years old. It was an extraordinary voyage. I have such fond memories of that trip. Thank you so much for posting. My parents and I enjoyed watching this video so much. Wow. I remember the bartenders making fresh orange juice every morning. I can still smell the citrus-scent wafting through the air!
I remember the salt water pool. I was about 5 years old, but I still remember the wonderful crew, including the bar tender, who signed my autograph puppy. I still have it.
Thank you for this video. It reminds me of my aunt Ade who worked on this ship for many years; she was also employed on the twin ships Michelangelo and Raffaello. The sixties were a great time for our country!
My mother has passed away now but among her belongings, I found an envelope with air mail writing paper and envelopes that has the name of this ship on it. Like you used to find in a hotel room. I do know that she went to Italy once so now I'm assuming it was on the Leonardo. What a great video. I really enjoyed it.
On my voyage from Genoa to NY the captain decided NOT to engage the stabilizers because it would slow down the vessel and we'd be late for our arrival in NY. That's what we were told but I believe the ship was never a good design to be stable in bad weather. We encountered force 9 gale winds. The ship pitched and rocked. Needed a chair to hang on to going across the dance floor. People sick everywhere. Had a first class ticket and no appetite! Memories of the Leonardo Da Vinci!
The 'Leonardo da Vinci' was lost 11 months before I was born. I wish my generation could've experienced the kind of style at sea she and her fleet mates represented.
Would love to see your brochure of this ship. I have lots of stuff from the Italian Line, most of which is about the Andrea Doria (Brochure from 1953; incredible book in Italian issued by its builder (I think) also in 1953) Love the Leonardo, though - so modern and colorful in 1960, such great contemporary design - really like that mural on the stairway landing at :49, & the silver panel bas-relief of Leonardo da Vinci in the first video
Who were these boys and are they still alive? I have my memories too of departing NYC to Italy in 1968 aboard the Michelangelo and coming back in the summer of 1969. Magnificent service.
@rossiniverdi1 what happened to the leonardo?my dad's uncle crossed many times on it,my grandparents would cross on the saturnia and vulcania back in the early 50's ..they wuld put the car on the ship and get off in Lisbon and stay the whole winter, visiting family and touring spain thanks to jvarela965,wonderful memories
@rossiniverdi1 WOW !. How fortunate you were. I have a PDF file of one of the orignal brochures from 1961 when the ship was painted in it's original black. Email me if you want a copy. CIAO!

My grandparents came to the US on this ship.. so great to see what it was like
Those were the days. A lot of fun for the 3 boys. More than sitting in an airplane, I think.
This is just marvellous. I wish I had lived during those magnificent times...

Thanks to Hollywood Italy's contributions to art and technology like this are largely forgotten. Not all criminals I see.

This ship was in the same storm we hit in 1967
Didn't it also go to Napoli?
How about bringing classic liners back ? The would be much better than those ugly ass cruise ships
Hear hear 👍

@jvarela965 would love a copy of the old brochures
I hated though when they were all painted white. Ships looked better painted Navy Blue/ White trim.
