When you are exposed to the caliber of artists like the ones you have seen or heard from the Philippines, your standards for music appreciation is already set so high. I do appreciate music from all over the world as well as different genres, however, I always go back to listening to OPM artists. They stand in a different class of artists. Love your reactions to karaoke singers. 😜

There's a lot of great singers in the Philippines that's why if you're a professional singer or a big artist in the country, you should always be do all your best in every single performance cause they could criticize you easily if they want. That's the reason why we have a lot of great singers cause the competition never ends. .its mind blowing honestly

16:17 to answer your question (well from my own perspective), those well known singers here are the ones who put dedication and sacrifice into performing and creating music. yes, there's a lot of people who can sing but a lot of them too just enjoy it as their hobby or some kind of talent that they only showcase to their family and friends. To become a famous singer, it's either they got popular through joining a contest (broadcasted on TV), got viral but are able to maintain that popularity (coz many don't), a really famous celebrity/influencer that releases his/her own song/s, or through years of continuously creating music and performing (on different places) until someday they gained numerous fans. I mean to really become a recognized singer and stand out from a lot of Filipinos who can sing, you'll have to focus on that goal. It's supposed to be your passion in life. And sometimes it's "luck" because surely, a lot of amazing singers didn't make it even though they sacrificed so much.

For Ezra's comment about Bands having a hard gigs in bars in PH, its actually quite the contrary. Bands in bars and fiestas often involve the crowd or a participant when they're doing sets. It kept the audience or just the bar patrons entertained, and at the same time help the main vocals take a break from singing. Even as a filipino who often goes to bars finds it fascinating how much of a life hack was that. Its entertaining.

the first one was so funny when she did that long high note and then went "ang taas nakakakainis!" ("so high, it's so annoying!") hahaha. she's so annoyed by it but she knows the song like the back of her hand so she's obviously sang it on karaoke a LOT. so even though it's hard, she persists and continues to practice it and that's awesome... now, the thing that amazes me with people who are so good at singing karaoke anywhere is that those machines sound really bad by themselves haha the speakers are in front of you and so very bad and you can't hear yourself, but they manage to make concerts out of it.

Hopefully old gen OPM will take a rest to give way to new gen OPM. For 30 years, I’ve been hearing the same old OPM songs, sang by different singers from different singing competitions year after year, which is why it is not easy for new artists with original songs to break into mainstream OPM because many Filipinos wanted to see the next best version of an old song. Our only hope for new gen OPM are spotify, youtube, and live concerts.

you buy a karaoke set or a karaoke dvd for a much lower price then you set up your mics and your speakers. it comes with a songbook where songs are listed with their code number and you type it in the karaoke and it plays a lyrics video but with a minus one. if you grew up with a karaoke, you would end up memorizing the song codes/number of your favorite songs haha. usually, you can also change the tempo and pitch of the songs

There was a time when singers made their distinction by belting the highest, longest note they could execute. It stripped away the artistry and soul of the songs. And I believe that's why for a long time alternative OPM was the most popular local genre because they were keeping true to the expression of the songs instead of engaging in Vocal Olympics.

True, what Efra said. "Offer something different for a performer to be notice" example; Sb19 blew up in September 2, 2019 due to their perfectly synchronized dance practice video on Twitter.
On the other side, of Filipinos are very demanding and very discriminating audience. Nobody would take notice of you if you're a mediocre performer by Filipino standard.

In the Philippines pre-pandemic, people go out on videoke parties where the microphone goes around and everyone sings their favorite songs from all genres and all eras of music. There are videoke rooms for hire for 3-6 hours and people attend and cram in from 1-2 dozen people just to sing or listen while eating and drinking.
You can buy a Bluetooth microphone that connects to your smartphone. Then select a karaoke video on RUclips with the song title and version you want to sing. The music and your voice will play from the videoke microphone's speakers and you read the lyrics from your smart phone. There are also apps that can record your voice and face as the music plays and the lyrics are displayed on your phone's touchscreen.

Used to be cd or dvds karaoke. Nowadays they are built in songs saved on memory chips though same experience. You choose the song you want to sing and voila you sing with it. Depends on the karaoke, most likely you have the basic controls I.e. pitch, tempo..echo,reverb etc. Some are just the machine you need to connect to speakers some are whole system where all you need to do is plug the power on and that’s it.

Just like what you have notice, our singing and imitations of original singers are far from average that it becomes too common that mass majority of Filipinos can sing. So you wonder how can a singer here in the Philippines can be above among the rest?
All you need to do is close your eyes, of you can recognized the singer's voice, style and uniqueness without looking at them, then that's your answer why that singer is famous here in the Philippines. Even if you are a great singer in our country but just sounded too common. It's not gonna be impressive for us.
You can use Morissette, KZ, Regine, Jaya, Kyla, Yeng, Ben&Ben, Moira and a lot more. It's given that they are all amazing singers just like many Filipinos, but even without looking at them you'll know that they are the one singing.
