Swissair Flight 111 was a scheduled international passenger flight from New York City, United States, to Geneva, Switzerland. This flight was also a codeshare flight with Delta Air Lines. On 2 September 1998, the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 performing this flight, registration HB-IWF, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean southwest of Halifax International Airport at the entrance to St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia. The crash site was 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from shore, roughly equidistant from the tiny fishing and tourist communities of Peggys Cove and Bayswater. All 229 passengers and crew aboard the MD-11 died - the highest death toll of any McDonnell Douglas MD-11 accident in aviation history

Obviously pilots should remain as calm as possible during critical situations of any kind while flying. But really... those 2 took that cool attitude to a whole new level. They sounded like ordering coffee and a Schnitzel while declaring emergency. Great video, BTW.

@M.r. Moon Funny. I wrote my reply. It was detailed, and covered everything you just retorted.
However, my app I was using did something weird when I hit SEND, and my reply never registered so that I could see it... so I assumed it never went up, and didn't feel like rehashing.
Oddly, now I'm in the official YT app, and my reply is STILL amiss, despite the fact you obviously saw it.
      Hmmmmm.
Anyway, though I can't see them, I stand by my words. They were food for thought in reply to your whimsical dismissiveness of the pilot's considerations or professionalism. He didn't get to his position by being a rank amateur like a lot of the condescendingly critical armchair pros in these comment forums.
Trust me when I say he gave the entire situation a LOT more thought than you did, given what little info he had to work with.

The insulation didn’t simply fail; it was discovered to be highly flammable, which the manufacturer denied until the TSB tests were released. It actually made the fire burn hotter and shortened the time the pilots had to get the plane on the ground.
The in-flight entertainment system was also very shoddily installed. One investigator said he couldn’t believe it was Swissair work.

Bob Kerbs, In 2008 I was in an incident on a UA flight...everyone believed we were crashing. I thought I had about 60 seconds to live. They called it "severe turbulence" on the news, but the plane dropped straight down and then went into a dive, screaming and heading towards the desert floor. Beverage cart went airborne, flight attendants were injured, and everyone on one side of the plane got soaked from flying drinks. Terrifying! I have no clue why I'm watching this video. My pulse is racing. Time to go find a puppy video or something. I still have the letter I got from United apologizing and offering a MEAL VOUCHER.

Being a retired jet pilot I remember this ill fated flight like it was yesterday. It was studied by all of us during
simulator training and the bottom line is where there's smoke there is fire. Yes the crew was calm and collective. Their major mistake was not landing immediately while consumed with weight of the aircraft.

They didn't KNOW, by the time the fire burst through the cockpit ceiling, it was 1025, that is when they declared the emergency, no other indications before that what the fire was doing other than smoke. At the detection of it, they couldn't have landed without losing more altitude, they's have put in into the ground under the best of conditions, and conditions aside from the smoke were far from idea. All this is foolish speculation, they should have landed, oh yeah, YOU Know, but two experienced pilots with thousands of hours did not...yeah sure.

The DC-10 nearly killed me twice in the mid to late 1970’s. Two separate flights, two different aircraft, several years apart. First one was a flight from Philadelpia to Las Vegas. Center engine exploded just before the aircraft took off. No injuries, just an inconvenience. The second one was a flight from Philadelphia to Detroit which continued on to Seattle. I got off in Detroit. The aircraft crashed after taking off for Seattle with no survivors. The DC-10 gained such a reputation that it was taken out of passenger service but continued to fly freight to this day as far as I know.

This puts all crews to the highest alert! Sadly they did not know it was the IFE´s main unit which caught fire, because everything was new and they were not familiar with it. Today, usually all IFE main units are equipped with automatic fire extinguishers and are part of the cabin´s fire fighting procedures.

I live on the East coast of St. Margarets Bay when this happened. The Bay is often under or next to 3 of the flyways to Europe, with many international flights passing near or even over my house so there is a great deal of airplane noise. Swissair was on a flyway just off the Atlantic Coast when the problem developed and they turned inland. The weather was low cloud and light rain at my house and over the Bay. I was working on my computer in my study on the Bay side of my house. For the fuel dump ATC turned. Swissair south down the middle of the Bay. I must have heard them go by, but because airplane noise is so common I didn’t notice this. While they were coming down the Bay, they lost all their instrumentation while they were in heavy cloud. The pilot lost his orientation and they crashed. I did hear and notice the crash, as did many people around the Bay though I didn’t know what it was then. I thought thunder??? But it didn’t sound quite right..more like stage thunder from shaking metal than real thunder. In fact, it sounded exactly like what it was, ie an airplane hitting water at a speed that made the water hard as concrete, and shattering. (Cont. next comment)

This video only goes to show you how quickly an emergency situation on a plane can deteriorate in a short period of time. It’s scary as hell, as the pilots don’t have too much time to make fast decisions and trying to solve an issue that could most likely kill both themselves and the passengers aboard. I salute the pilots for staying calm at least on the outside.

Very good video, thanks for sharing. The one thing not mentioned is it's believed that when Low was trying to fly the plane at the end, he likely could not see more than a few inches , and likely pressed his face (mask on) up close to the windshield, or side windshield as possible in an attempt to do so, which likely contributed to the bank angle. But who knows, we'll never know for sure.

I'll always wonder if the flight could have made it safely to a runway had the captain decided to NOT follow protocol and dump fuel first, and to just get the blasted airplane on the ground as soon as humanly possible - disregarding the possible over-weight landing problems. Spreading flames do not respect protocol and procedure.

Replace problems with high risks. The pilots did everything right when following the checklist, the nail in the coffin was switching off the AC. They didn’t even know where the fire was and how urgent a landing is, you simply don’t risk an overweight landing as it is quite dangerous

If you have to don face masks because of the amount of smoke in the cockpit, that is a serious situation, immediate danger. You land the aircraft quicker than ASAP. Airliners are designed to land with a full load of fuel in an emergency, so dumping fuel is recommended but not required if it is a dire emergency. In an aircraft fire every SECOND counts.

Was once traveling on a Lear. Fuel began leaking from the wing shortly after takeoff. Another person in our group with flight experience told the pilot to “put it down NOW!” As we descended for landing there were fire trucks a plenty, hoses with foam, men in hazmat suits, etc. I’d been a little anxious before that, but as we descended the pressure on the wing stopped the leak so I was fairly calm ... even joked thinking all the fire equipment was a bit of overkill. Thankfully, I didn’t understand that this particular plane couldn’t dump fuel, so we were landing with close to full. Pilot said one spark in the “right place” on landing & the plane would’ve gone up in flames. Thank God I wasn’t aware of that til after we landed. Can’t begin to imagine what these poor people went through knowing their fate.

You can't help but reflect upon the fact that less than a month before Flight 111 crashed, HB-IWF had its bus-tie sensing relay replaced because of a fire that had occurred in Bangkok on August 3rd, 1998. Swissair maintenance ordered the replacement of all MD-11 bus-tie relays that very next day.
The technician installing the new relay in HB-IWF made an error, and when it was powered up, it shorted out. A short in Kapton wiring is SERIOUS. Faults can be induced both upstream and downstream in wiring bundles and components. You have to wonder just how extensively the associated wiring was checked out after the short circuit. It's difficult to be persuaded that the installation fault was simply rectified and all was then guaranteed to be as new.

I've watched this several times, read every comment and the perspective I came up with is pretty simple. Once the flight attendant came back with smoke too, then the decision would've been made immediately. Drop down, and head for Halifax without fuel dump. When there is smoke, if the fire is not crackling, its a great chance to be at any moment. It is the pilots duty to break a problem down, quickly, with the passengers and people in the ground 1 and 1a. priorities. Fire on a plane in flight is probably as bad as it can get, and nonchalance cannot be tolorated. The Co.Pilot should've took control after the fuel dump situation was selected. Time was of the essence, Espescially since they didn't know where the smokecwas coming from, and the oxygen masked deployed. Its that simple!
I hope pilots get to see these situations in training and discuss every scenario so the decisions come naturally. These exercises save lives.

I think the pilots training ultimately blindsided them. They are taught to be calm and rational but in this situation they actually needed panic to think about landing asap and not dump fuel.

They really did sound so calm and in control! Only in the last 30 seconds or so do you hear the tenseness in the co-pilot's voice. I, on the other hand, would have keyed the mic and screamed "THE GODDAMN PLANE IS ON FIRE!!!"

So if they took the situation more seriously and decended and landed heavy, maybe different outcome? Smoke means fire. Lots of smoke means big fire is right around the corner... Only takes a minute for a small fire to start raging. They should have landed immediately. And they should have had every fire extinguisher on that plane up front before the fire broke out! They seemed pretty calm about the whole thing... RIP

You have no frigging idea what they were going through, and what the cabin crew was doing, clearing away food utensils, preparing the passengers, working in the dark with flashlights because the power was cut as Zimmerman rotated the smoke selector switch. They should have done this, they should have done that...what are you transportation safety board and an experienced jumbo jet pilot?

For all new Pilots...Call the emergency and land immediately. Better safe than sorry especially if you smell smoke in the cockpit. I believe back in the day when this SwissAir 111 was when people could smoke in the aircraft. Remember If you smell smoke LAND and be ready for an emergency landing on terrain.
Always assume the worst.... get the F/O to read the checklist and do what make sense to you. You are the captain.
    Safe flying.

Clearly, they should have declared a Mayday and started dumping fuel without regard to rules. They should have gone direct to Halifax and attempted a soft landing on runway 06. The Captain made bad decisions resulting in the loss on the aircraft and all souls onboard. Sad.

In the final crash report, it is noted that even if the crew had began an emergency descent at the moment they discovered smoke, the aircraft wouldn't have made it. It was 66nm from the airport at that time and even without dumping fuel, either the aircraft would have been over the airport with too much altitude and airspeed to land, or would have had to execute manoeuvres to slow itself and lose height for the approach. Based on the time between the first indication of trouble and the multiple failure of systems that made the aircraft uncontrollable, these failures would have occurred before the aircraft would have been able to land, and even if it had, it would not have been able to stop on the runway.

If the recirculating fans had not been cut off, the fire would have been kept back for a while, giving them more time to reach Halifax.. But investigators' final determination was that it still would have made no difference in the outcome. Hindsight, guess they should have listened to ATC and commenced descending upon suggestion, dumping the f'ing fuel along the way. Where was their sense of urgency?

    • @norwegiangangsta

AFAIK in terms of time "winning" it didn't really matter if they dumped the fuel or not. They were doomed anyway.

I can't fault them for turning off the electrical power /recirc fans. I would have done the same. But, yes, don't wait to dump fuel and get that jet on the ground ASAP, overweight or not.

Excellent content and 3D animation of this horrific event!! R.I.P. to all the victims.
The conclusion drawn right at the end however, seems to postulate a direct connection between the tragic crash of flight SR111 and the huge catastrophe of Swissair having to declare bankruptcy in October 2001. The latter was an event far more complex in its making and the way it eventually unfolded during the final days and hours was, to say the least, more than bizarre. The bankruptcy of this once magnificent and proud Airline that set standards to international air travel, coupled with the almost overnight disappearance of Swissair, understandably caused a sort of "national trauma" to the Swiss People. I for one was very sad to see it gone...
Swiss International Airlines, the airline that made Swissair "rise from the ashes" to take to the skies again, and which continues the high standards of safety and service set by its predecessor, can only be congratulated for what has been achieved since those humble beginnings in April 2002. No wonder when flying with them, people tend to still say: "I am travelling on Swissair!" 🇨🇭✈️🇨🇭

On the question of whether they could have landed safely if they went directly to the airport, I had cause to fly to Ottawa and back a week or so after the crash. On the way back we descended across the top of St. Margarets Bay on the path Swissair would have taken if ATC had turned them toward the airport instead of back over the Bay. I have a timer on my watch, and I knew the time when Swissair crashed. I turned on my watch and noted the time until we touched down on the runway. We had just touched down and were rolling down the runway decelerating when we reached the moment when Swissair crashed. However our plane was moving much more slowly than Swissair was, since they had to decelerate from international travel speed. The opportunity to slow down was another reason that the pilots chose to go over the Bay and dump fuel. My conclusion was that they could reach the airport if they went there directly, but would have been going too fast when they landed, and would shoot off the end of the runway, crash, and cause a forest fire, since the airport is in the middle of a forest, and the trees were very dry. The thick clouds also contributed to the disorientation of the pilot that produced the crash. On a clear night the airport is visible from St. Margarets Bay, and the pilots could have seen lights along the coast, so they could have maintained their orientation and flown toward the airport by eye, even though they had lost ATC. Also, if they hadn’t been over water, they could have crashed on land and killed people on the ground ... either those of us around the Bay, or the city of Bedford which is under the flight path they would have been turned onto if they asked to go to the airport instead of over the Bay. Hope these comments are of some interest.
