I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.
My favorite creature to look for is, humans with electronics. Because I don’t run any electronics on my kayak😊
Interesting
Carp are another one to avoid if you see them in shallow water. They stir up so much mud it seems to push the bass out
Agreed most of the time
I fish at night a lot,raccoons movement,owls hooting,movement in woods.
Very cool
Hi Matt, In lakes that have a good Musky population, I've noticed that the bass stick MUCH closer to the cover and are less likely to hit top water baits. I'm 62 years old and this has held true on every lake that I fished regularly that had muskies in it.
Interesting
As I thought about this, more came to mind. If fishing bass in the shallows and I see a big snapper, I move down the shore a bit. If I can hear the bluegill sucking bugs off the bottom of lily pads I throw a frog where it has orange or yellow or blue on bottom and I cut the legs short so it’s more bluegill looking. Always watch for Osprey.
Thanks for sharing
Love this linking the natural food chain type approach to fishing. Worked for me for many years! Greetings from South Africa
Awesome! Thanks for watching
Interesting observation about the snakes. I know that snakes not only eat fish, but are also frog eatters. It might be possible that the snakes scare up frogs for the bass to feed on.
could be
If I see Bigfoot in an area, I will fish there. 😂
Hah
Good video Matt, I've also heard if the cows are up grazing, the fish be biting 🎣🙂
Lots of people are saying this
Here in Austria at the big lakes: the swallows in the spring and you begin to catch whitefish, Matt !
Awesome
Excellent topic matt
Thanks for watching!
I know they don't bother the fish, but I've never caught a fish when there are beavers swimming around
Interesting
Nice video Matt.Like the otters, when i see bigfoot roaming the banks i fish offshore.😂😂
Haha
Did you know there is no such thing as a seagull? It’s a slang term for a type of bird, gulls. Look in a bird book. Always look for feeding birds. In MN when the lilacs bloom the crappie are spawning.
Thanks for sharing
My grandpa and dad always said if the cows are standing, the fish are bitting. If the cows are laying down, gonna be a slow bite
Yes, if they are up grazing I take that as a sign they are biting. Laying down-not biting.
Holds true more often than not.
Yep
I can say that you can substitute otters for beavers and fallow the same advice. I have had many a good day ruined by one single beaver.
Agreed
If we see squirrels playing in the yards chasing each other, we know they will be bitting that morning!
Awesome
Never heard that one about snakes!! From ow on when I see a snake a throw behind him and see if anything is following!! Stay Safe & God Bless!!! 🤠👍
Give it a try
I have found if I see a snake I can make a wake with an ore getting away from it!😂
haha
Snakes are one of mine. I almost always have good luck where I’ve seen snakes.
Interesting
Have you every look at the cows in the pasture are they eating or they laying down not eating
yep
When I was a kid I always heard that when the cows where laying down fishing was good.
Interesting
Great info again Matt 👍 I couldn’t get to the Chowan until Saturday and I missed my chance to meet you,and I believe that BPT will definitely be coming back. I got to hang out with your powerhouse partners Matt Becker and Drew”8,000,000stumps”Gill so, I’m saying you and Spencer will be rounding the turn to your championship round soon🍀🎣🍀💯 once they announce the Chowan again come on down and prefish🤷🏻♂️😜
I hope you are right
Otters turn fish off for sure I was almost every cadt to shut down. Otter was showing off for 30 minutes. Egrets are awesome bait indicators.
Yes they are!
i avoid the areas where creatures like the Buckeye Navy are around. 🤣🤣🤣
They show up on those big holiday weekends and all through the summer.
Haha
A few months ago I witnessed a warfare between gulls and loons in a cove I was fishing. There were no baitfish involved. The loons were on the water and diving under the water and the gulls were diving on the loons from the air. Craziest thing I have ever seen. I quickly moved over to the activity thinking bass were pushing bait to the surface and there were no baitfish and even worse, no bass. It was just a skirmish between the birds. I could tell that from my FFS.
Interesting
A number of years ago, the Iowa dnr put 6 river otters in our home lake of 650 acres. And once was abundant beaver huts in the banks looked as there was a back hoe digging them up, and the beaver were gone in a matter of one year, also I noticed a huge number of 3 to 5 lb bass that had their sides raked to open wounds and a alarming number of large bass carcasses up on the bank. Now it's been 5 years latter there are 3 new large beaver huts. And the otters are gone and have been for two or 3 years now.
Interesting
When bass fishing, do you avoid areas with lots of pike?
Not at all
I've always been told if the Cows are up and grazing on your way to the lake the bite is going to be good, if they are laying down and not grazing the bite is going to be tough.
I've heard the same thing. When I'm traveling with family ( especially on vacation through other states) and see the cattle grazing, I'll say the fish are biting and they'll say how do you know ? Because the cows are eating 🙂
Interesting someone else said the opposite haha
Good show Matt
Thanks
Ive had 2 buddys that have had ponds cleaned out by otters...gar swimming around are usually a good sign they eat the same thing as bass
dang
I agree! They will empty a pond. And usually they are in pairs. I had a go-to pond and they cleaned it out 🤬 Once they empty the pond they move on.
Off subject but what would be a good but inexpensive light spinning reel for floating worm fishing and weightless fluke fishing,I have a old abu Garcia 502 and it's feels to heavy for the rod I use?

@@MattStefanFishing thank you Matt I enjoyed your videos
I'm here in PSL FLORIDA.. Speaking of snakes... Around the end of summer beginning of fall. Red color water snakes are seen swimming all over the canal area... Not many other color snakes
But i use red color soft plastics. Man i have a feild day..
Oh wow!
I used to fish with an old guy that said if the cows were laying down on the way to the lake the fish we’re going to be inactive and we had to fish slow moving baits and vice versa
Interesting
Good video Matt 🤛
Thanks 👍
What about beavers??? Any insight? We have them around us, but I’ve never been able to make any correlations about their activity.
i dont seem to have an issue with beavers
@@MattStefanFishing Thanks. The thing that bothers me about them is the continual tail slaps when we are near… I have to think that fish probably learn that the sound means danger.
I do alot of catfishing at night. My river is shallow. I can only cast to about 3' of water. When the beaver splashes fish stop biting. Same thing with a channel cat going into a death roll. That also warns the other fish about danger.
@@johnmiller5987 thanks
How did you do on the chowan
Terrible
How did you do at chowan??
Terrible
It's great until seagulls start dive bombing your lures to the point you can't even fish
Haha
Bald eagles, cormarants and osprey. Wild animals in general don't have time or energy to waste. Otters excepted. I was flipping a Texas rig along overhanging spruce and cedar limbs when a blue heron busted out 10 feet away and almost knocked me out off the boat. It was tucked under the limbs in an ambush spot. The cormarant around here are a real nuisance.
Cormorant are nasty
Cats, if you see a lot of cats out prowling bass are probably doing the same, bass are very cat like for a fish.
Interesting
If you see a bear standing in the current. 😉 Thanks, Matt. I will walk the bank casting a sinking bait and if frogs start jumping in the water I'll circle back with topwater
Interesting
I don't like otters. They are showing up all over my local creek in Indiana.
I like otters just not when fishing
Dogwood trees
So true.
Get a frog tied on
A Matt Stefan sighting?😅
Haha
I always know it is a good time to fish is when the wife starts bitching, it’s a great time to go to the lake and fish!!!!
Haha
Turtles on log equals bass in the cove. Most 12 year olds know this
Yep
👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching!
When the cows are on two legs square dancing or doing the mambo, I do not go fishing. I go home and hide under the bed...
Hahahaga
Man buddy really had no ideas for what film today. Remember when he pretended he knocked over his crank bait box and had to untangle them and just showed us his old baits? Its a good thing he can fish...
Sorry it wasn’t helpful for you and i absolutely did not pretend to knock over my box…i don’t have enough time to waste to make messes like that.
F Them Otters 🤬
haha
🍺👍.
Thanks for watching!
