No I've been sitting back binge watching your videos for a about 2 weeks now and I tell you something. You drove the nail through the board on this one great job. Now lets wait and see if THEY are listening.
Was in Chicago last month for a couple weeks. I was expecting an old west outlaw Tombstone type of place with a modern vibe. Everybody I encountered, mom and pop stores, 7-11's, gas stations. All the places you would expect unfriendly people. Everyone was friendlier than the locals here in Seattle. In Seattle people are afraid to look at anyone or say hello to a stranger. Media does affect reputation.
I was talking to a conservative a few months back who travels a lot for work as a contractor (his home is small town Alabama) and he had worked in Chicago and when I met him he was working near Seattle. He said straight off that he based his opinions on these cities on things he had read before going there. And to listen to him, both cities sounded like they were in the middle of a full blown civil war that made Syria or Somalia look like peaceful uptoias. He also admitted that during his time in both cities he basically only saw either his hotel or the place he was working and the roads in between. He made very little effort to actually explore beyond that as he was too scared of something happening to him. I've never been to Chicago, but I live near Seattle. And while I dont know it very well, his description of it was nothing like my experience of visiting the city. And he wouldn't even listen to me trying to debunk the lies he had been told. And it really showed just how strong a hold conservative media has on these people and the totally enclosed bubble they put themselves into. And I don't know how to break that.
I really appreciate this video Beau. I'm from Chicago, and it's extremely frustrating when people talk about how dangerous it is and how it's essentially a war zone. The coverage is distorted that my friend's in other countries worry about my safety and I've had to explain that yes there are some bad areas in Chicago but they aren't that big especially compared to the size of the city and the population size.
I love your perspective on all of these topics. I genuinely think that if people could sit down, and speak to each other this way with open minds and hearts. We could actually find middle ground and get shit done.
I work with a woman who would classify herself as a Republican. I am a Progressive. We talk about things we shouldn't at work all the time. And while on paper we look very different, we have almost the same opinions on most things we talk about. So I whole heartedly agree with you.
I’m a firm believer that progress comes from compromise, and that means understanding each side to find a middle ground. It’s ok not to agree 100% on everything, or even 30%. All perspectives are not only valid, but right. That’s why you need to put your ego to the wayside and actually understand why they might feel differently. We dehumanize anyone who doesn’t agree with us and label them as OTHER. When NO ONE is the same, we all come our own unique blend of common experiences. Maybe we can learn that and actually learn how to coexist peacefully.
Please don't fall for this. Sooner or later they always play their hand. He is VERY refined. Every city he listed is predominantly AA, check for yourself. He is saying (double speak) anywhere you find them there is violence. This video is not a defense it is an accusation.
I'm in love with Beau. Not physically but I love the way he thinks. The way he reasons. I've found my soulmate. May you live long and prosper, my friend!
You are a busy man. It's all over. To single out one city is bull. We got a problem, let's deal with it like adults, if that's possible. Thanks for what you are doing.
Or even text without context is just pretext for whatever you want to say - learned this from a preacher and it stuck with me. Thank you for your comment.
Love it. Detroit is the same way. I loved living there and if the economy was better I would move back in a heartbeat. The houses are all well built, I always felt comfortable in my neighorhood (Rosedale Park area). The bad is the economy, as in plentiful well paying jobs, were run off when Snyder eliminated the tax incentives for studios that was really helping Detroit regain what it lost when plants closed.
And every time Detroiters start to put things back together, we get yet another Snyder-ish genius to dismantle whatever was getting accomplished! If that scale of resilience by the people could be expanded, maybe the country as a whole could start to turn around! Just a thought...
@@rebeccapresti9650 they do it deliberately to displace the Black population. Giving Chicago the war zone reputation is part of that strategy. They have been doing this to cities with large Black populations for decades. The constant displacement is how they prevent Black people from building generational wealth.
I started law school this week. I’m gonna try to keep a low profile, at least for a little while. It’ll be nice to be in a place where nobody knows anything about me except for what I show them:)
My public high school back home had poor students and far more minorities than the local private school. Whenever local press/media had something negative to say about my high school, we saw it on the *front page.* But when one of our students was *stabbed* while attending a party thrown by private school kids, it didn't even get a passing *mention* - despite that attack garnering attention from an ambulance, law enforcement, and had drugs in addition to alcohol and zero adults present. This reminds me of that, with a notoriety applied to the least offensive denominator. Yes cities are dangerous if you are an idiot tourist or an unlucky resident, but that is true of *all* places where large gatherings of people are found. But this is like all the people who are terrified of being caught in a terror attack while ignoring the fact that their diet or their automobile are faaaaar more likely to be the thing that kills them.
Amen! I live in Chicago. I've been trying to tell people that this is an amazing and welcoming city. Of course we have our "bad" areas. But so does everyone else. Thanks for making this video.

Found this interesting: After the comments about California i did some math. Homeless people per thousand - NY 4.7, DC 9.8, CA only 3.3. It makes a huge difference in the narrative when you account for context.
Though there is a rise in homeless in California - because people can't afford the friggen rent! $2000/month for a tiny studio apartment, seriously Santa Cruz? And they wonder why so many college kids are now living in that tent city..
Yay!!! New Orleans is number 1 again!!! And we couldn't have done it without you, the tourists. No, tourists aren't getting regularly shot and killed here. We do have a bunch of you coming here, who can't hold your liquor and lose your damn minds, that feel like you have to conceal carry to feel safe. You get drunk on Bourbon Street, do something stupid that pisses someone else off, and go for your gun, 'cause you're sacred of getting into a brawl. That's when people, who were just trying to have a good time, get shot. Also, staying in Air BnBs in neighborhoods you got no business being in is also a problem. That forces an already stressed housing situation to the breaking point. Y'all have driven us out of our own homes, 'cause, apparently, hotels aren't good enough for you. You deserve an "authentic" New Orleans experience. Well, getting shot in a neighborhood is pretty damn authentic around here. It's not all your fault. This is a really impoverished area of the country. Minimum wage is around $8/hour. Average rent is over $1/square foot, especially in the downtown around the French Quarter, where most of the service jobs are. Our school system went to all charter schools after Katrina. So, they're all education for profit. Basic infrastructure is a joke. If it rains, streets flood. Also, the major industry after tourism is petroleum and chemical refineries. Those businesses all have sweet heart deals on taxes. They pay less than a penny on the dollar in property taxes for their facilities. A local refinery has a property valued at $50 billion. They paid taxes on 1% of that, not the actual value. So just around .01%. Our sales tax is 10%. Most of the tax money generated here goes to the rest of the state to prop up other towns and cities' infrastructure, education, and services. Yeah. There's generations old problems here in poverty, lack of basic services, and an inflated cost of living. Over half the population of our city lives under the national poverty line. So, when you come here, have a good time. Despite all the problems, we do too. Just remember to tip your service people, be polite, and "don't start none there won't be none". Also, we're really tired of talking about Katrina to satisfy your ghoulish curiosity. Later.
Shoot, we had our honeymoon in Chicago in 2009... it's the reason we moved here shortly thereafter! The city actually lives up to its reputation for architecture, food, and live music.

Hi Beau, Ive lived in Chicago for a good while now. The biggest problem I see on a day to day basis is homelessness. I have not seen any murders, Ive never been robbed, but anytime I go anywhere I see at least 5 to 10 homeless folks. Of course being a left anarchist I have several systematic solutions in mind but what can I do to help my community in the meantime? I have the means of your average college student by the way.
Plenty of people were bitterly disappointed with the way Obama's presidency worked out, especially after all the hope at the start, but those that maintain this smear campaign against everything the man touched, well that comes from a much more deep seated place. The childishness of it (Michelle is really a man ffs) and the dogmatic persistence tells of an illogical hatred. We all know what drives that kind of anger.
As one who grew up and lived in the Chicago area for many years, I often miss the many great people and things about the city. The one thing I don't miss is the winter weather.
Between about the 1930's and the late 1980's, Chicago had a bad reputation due to mob violence, (specifically Al Capone) especially internationally. Chicago's image was largely repaired thanks to mostly positive figures like Mayor Harold Washington, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan and the 1985 Bears football team. John Hughes movies like "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" also helped. I think Chicago's negative image over the last decade or so can be traced to the ascendancy of Barack Obama (considering that he's from here) and the political right wing's desire to tar him in any way they can. And, not surprisingly, the media has been all too willing to play along. It is not a coincidence that Chicago started being tagged as the "murder capital" at around the same time as Obama's presidential run of 2008.
In the last couple months, I've been learning more about data interpretation and how data can be misrepresented, cherry-picked, and messed with. It's really been eye opening and helped me with debunking bullshit propaganda
We fear what we don't fully understand, and on top of that we can look at a list of bad and good things about someone or something, and we will see only the bad or good things, based on our bias. I have a very bad habit of only looking for the good, and it has cost me dearly.
I had a rep. But it was deserved. Don't mess with this guy. He takes it very personal. Just because I was good at math and science didn't mean I couldn't take you down if needed.
I live in Chicago, born and raised and I chuckle at the fear and hatred people have about my city. A lot of it comes from folks from downstate Illinois, but we really don't care about their opinions. :p Right now, summertime in Chicago is one of the *BEST* places to be. And FYI, crime in Chicago is NOTHING compared to what is was in the 90s. My city has truly come a long way.

Thank you so much for this one. Trying to explain this to others has been a nightmare over the last couple of years. Im not eloquent enough. I work in accounting and how numbers are spun on tv and by anyone bending the implications, drives me to yelling at kids on lawns etc.
Most of the homicides here, like most homicides in general, are committed by someone at least somewhat known by the victim. And furthermore, most homicides are intricately woven in with issues of poverty. Even in this town, if you are scared of getting murdered just walking down the street, you might as well be equally scared of getting hit by lightning, or dying from a fall in the shower.
My country of Mexico gets labeled dangerous by US news media all the time. I have traveled extensively, and met people from all over the world enjoying themselves, when I ask them why Mexico? Often then not they replied why not, the news says one thing but we wanted to experience it for ourselves. When I'm in Mexico their news sometimes focuses on the violence in the US with these mass shootings. News focus on violence because that is what captures peoples attention, positive messages are few and far between.
As you said in another video Beau, Pandora's box has already been opened! Even if Chicago was to lower its Crime rate like New York City, the reputation will pass down to future generations. Especially to those who never been there! I'm not from Chicago, but I know almost ANY place that gets a reputation, gets shit talked about it the most by people who never been there!
Thanks, Beau. Being in the Chicago area (NW suburbs, so about 25 miles away), the nightly news and seeming moods of the areas travelled never reflected the rampant violence narrative of the "candidate propaganda network and cheer squad". I understand the problems with fighting such misuse of data is an harder than an uphill battle. Any counter stats or clarification based on identifiable sources leaves you in equivocation hęll. The applicable quote is one I see attributed to Mark Twain and a good one, regardless of who wrote it: "Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience" (variation of Proverbs 26:4, per Rachel Xavier). I like it here, despite the 110⁰ F in the the summer and -40⁰ in the winter.
I grew up on the Southside (Marquette Park area) of Chicago. And I appreciate you setting somethings straight. It was rough some days but overall i had a good upbringing. Now a days ppl hear I lived in Chicago and first thing that pops in their head is murder. A reputation that automatically puts us in a different category. But Chicago has more to offer than that.
Love your videos. My right wing friends actually listen to you. I had one guy tell me, the only reason he really checked out your video I sent him was because you looked liked people he knows. I think it's the whole stand your ground thing. Most places, unless you are home, if you can protect yourself by leaving, you are required to.
I wasn't on bath salts.
That's what I thought when I went to Chicago, I thought this place ain't so tough...these people are pretty cool lots of blacks lots of Hispanics. I rode the subway everywhere. I had a great time there, nothing bad happened. I dont believe the bad press anymore, I want to go again.
I kid you not, my mother and i were literally arguing about this exact topic, Chicago specifically. And then you posted this video. I’m shook :0
Have you shown your mom this video?
Seiferboy Gaming nah she always says she doesn’t have time and to just tell her the gist lol. I tried explaining it to her, but she was still kinda arguing me. I think Beau is a little more convincing than I am haha :P

As a lifelong Chicagoan, thankyou..
I was born and raised in Chicago and I tell people it's not as bad as the news makes it out to be
I really appreciate this video Beau.
So do I
I’m a firm believer that progress comes from compromise, and that means understanding each side to find a middle ground.
Deep af as always blowing MINDS with logic and reasoning💯
Please don't fall for this. Sooner or later they always play their hand. He is VERY refined. Every city he listed is predominantly AA, check for yourself. He is saying (double speak) anywhere you find them there is violence. This video is not a defense it is an accusation.

Beau, you should be on national tv or a daytime tv show more often ..you're a speaker of truth

Later.
💯💔

All the good press in the world can not change the fact that Chicago is the WORST city to drive in due to poor planning. The people are great!
Thank you Beau.
Beau I truly appreciate your insights. Wish I had neighbors with your points of view.

Even here, though, while it can be a bit rough at times, its not like I fear for my life whenever I walk out the door.
Thanks Beau.
My country of Mexico gets labeled dangerous by US news media all the time. I have traveled extensively, and met people from all over the world enjoying themselves, when I ask them why Mexico?
