- Various Television commercials from Australia:
This advertisement for Holden cars was first broadcast on Australian television during the 1970's.
The jingle which claims Australian people like 'football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars' became popular at the time and is still fondly remembered by most people who are old enough to remember this commercial.
I'm not certain when about the seventies this ad was broadcast.

I felt so sad watching this. Only because it reminds me of a happier time. Thanks for posting this video.
Came here for nostalgia cos it's just been announced we're losing Holden at the end of this year :'(
Lol I just commented on that. Sad times bro, sad times.
Absolutely hate that we're losing Holden. My Kingswood is the best car I've ever had.
The "Australian" is also being replaced with cheap imports.
Yeah, very sad when Holden retired because of General Motors. My favorite car is Koenigsegg, Bugatti, Pagani, etc. Also Holden is one of my favorite cars too :'(
Voiceover by the late, great Ken Sparkes (1940-2016). R.I.P. Ken.
New Falconer Records You spotted it too. Great guy and great voice. Got to meet him a few times back in the 70's. Was driving a little silver Alfa if I remember correctly.
I think it was John Laws doing the voiceover.
@@nobodysbusiness566 They wouldn't have been able to afford John Laws.
@@nobodysbusiness566Definitely was Ken Sparkes. London to a brick.
Who's here after Holden announced their retirement
Me. Its sad how original australia used to be. Now we're just Mini-America
@@tomasandcoopersholiday3803More like Mega North Korea
At least America has freedoms
Lol. Such as?
In England, it would probably be "Cottage pie, cricket, Earl Grey, and Vauxhall cars"
Greg Palmer nah mate Aussie all the way mate
Yes
football, football is england's favorite sport. the sport that americans call soccer(im american)
so America would be Football, Apple Pie, Buffalo and Chevrolet Cars
Fußball, Fleischkuechle, Wild Boar and Opel cars.
This version is from 1980 - WB Utility, Isuzu LUV, VB Commodore.
Maybe even later because the 1980 WB had round headlights (I've still got mine) The nose-cone was also less angular and more bull-nosed - The rectangular headlight models came later.
The original version of this ad came out in 1975-76, but this one is certainly later
If it were around the world, it could be like this...
India - Cricket, Curry, Elephants and Tata cars
China - Ping pong, dumplings, pandas and Chery cars
Germany - Football, Bratwurst, Squirrels and Mercedes.
France - Football, Croissants, Red Deer and Peugeot cars.
Canada - Hockey, Poutine, Beavers and Chevy cars.
Though I know the US and South Africa had their own ad.
+wocko1 "Chevy cars" should be just "Chevrolet".
+Al-zein Kusmantoro, ..nahh, ..Zephyrs for you k1w1's cuz
Philippines- kapaw,pancit,eagles and jeepney cars.
Thailand - Muay Thai, Pad Thai, Elephants and Hilux trucks
America - Gridiron, Donuts, Mooses and Ford Pintos >:)
now it's table tennis , sushi, snakes & Korean cars!!!

Sad isn’t it
This would've been aired in 1980 (and not in the 1970's).
The sight of a VC Commodore, TE Gemini and the Isuzu KB being sold side by side to each other would've only been possible in 1980! In 1981, the KB was replaced with the new generation Holden Rodeo and VCs were replaced with VHs!
The 21st century - Australia has lost its good old ways, we've become so much more Americanized these days😉
More American than baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet?
More Americanized for sure, yet it's whatever-culture-pours-in-over-the-border-in-massive-numbers-thanks-to-the-governing-traitor-class that bothers me more.
The delicious irony of this comment on a low effort re-badged Chevrolet ad.
The irony being this song is a rip off of an American song 😂 😂
not wrong and all gonna be buried under Ayres Rock or Uluru or Great Rock one day as predictions are telling us so etc.
I remember going to the family Christmas days at the Elizabeth Plant and the 50th birthday with my family, sad day when we lose an icon and ones that produce such great memories.
Well, Holden is about to close the doors because Australians weren't buying them, footballers are now just contractors playing for a company and meat pies have become toxic bags of crap. At least kangaroos haven't changed.
A Google User I wish i was buy one holden car. My Pop, in the 70's years, has been living in the Western Australia since three years old ( now 60 years old ). And he loved so much holden cars, he got one with red colour.... Beautiful holden cars, so sad he will close the doors :(
Not true, Holden is the fourth bestselling car manufacturer in Australia so far. Its held that record since the 1970s XD
Football is still the same, AFL and muscley people running around
Meatpies are still the best... the American ones are the toxic bags >:)
JK about america
Wrong , They closed because parts where becoming to expensive LOL All the part dealers who supplied Holden / Toyota etc have closed up shop also
Some meat pies in Aus are still good tho
@@epictimtam5678 Gone now, market share had been plummeting for decades.
Rest In Peace, Holden.
bye bye Holden, thanks for the memories, & thanks for the support Tony Abbott.
It’s sad no more Holden around these days
Fuck, don't remind Me.
Thanks Libs
@@JackMcSomeone More like both thank both Whitlam and Fraser for signing us up to the Globalist Lima Declaration back in 1975
I've seen it called both, soccer and football, even in England. But Australia looks great to me, I must visit someday.
"Where the bloody hell are you???" One great Aussie expression
we need how Holdens back it is Australia's icon.
Possibly my favourite advertisement ever
I want this on my alarm clock to wake me up. I can also imagine myself in a psych ward singing it over and over and over and over and over...
+dirtydiscosecrets well mate, i'll go one better, if you want it as a ringtone on your smartphone. download AUDACITY, it's audio editing software.
install it.
press record
play this video again
and you'll have the recording
then take the digital audio recording and import it into your phone
and set it as your ringtone
or for your alarm clock if you have one of those that have an ipod on top, load it into your ipod and everymorning..... lol there you go
If it was in 2020: Facebook, SUVs, Sushi and Phantom Thieves!
Great old ad with John Laws, I remember this ad well :) us kids at the time were running aorund singing it everywhere lol
Ken Sparkes!
Now this commercial really was a product of its time. With the Falcon and the Commodore now being phased out, Australia is no longer in love with the traditional straight six and V8 family sedan and wagon. Sad really, since they're more appropriate for families than cramped hatchbacks or offroaders that never see the dirt.
Won't be anymore when 20th October 2017 arrives! A very sad day for all Australian's.......69 years of memories....Thank You Holden!!

R.I.P Holden 1948 - 2017😥
The year exactly of this commercial is from the 1981 and in one picture (0:44) be the great pilot racer Peter Brock and the locutor and comment Ken Sparkes how the voice of this commercial, great characters and now be in the heart of many fans of theys.
Holden has been an iconic brand to our country
wow interesting, i was young when this came out, it features the vb commodore which was released in 1978 so i believe this commercial started airing that year, i was 3 :P
Why is it so catchy lol
Heard this in high school exam like 10 years ago, I didn't even think I could find this on RUclips
cant get any more Australian than that!
RIP Holden 1948-2020
"Baseball, hot dog, apple pie and Chevrolet" was a GM jingle from '70s
Now they've stopped making Holden Cars, who would have believed it!!!!! 20/10/17 a sad day for the car industry in Oz!!!!
Oh well, at least we still have football, meatpies and kangaroos!
We don't have Gillies pies and they were the best pies Victoria had to offer.
@@nostalgiaof98
Gillies pies were fantastic, 1 of the best things about Bendigo, a town that has lost all of it's Icons, all it has left are the replacement cultures, ice freaks and Claude!
In Canada it probably would have been: Hockey, Doughnuts, Be-a-vers and GM Cars...
T.B.G. In South Africa, it's "braaivleis, rugby, sunny skies and Chevrolet"
More like those first three and the Pontiac Acadian.
A VC Commodore appears at 0:26...the VC came out in March 1980 so this couldn't have been aired in the 1970s.
+Jamie Foxx The description says late 70s (1979?), so the one pictured is likely a pre-production model that Holden slipped in to promote the next generation of Commodore.
+Jamie Foxx, ..and the WB series @0.39 was released in April 1980, the range consisting of two coupe utility models, a panel van and a cab chassis truck. I've never known them to release any info on new models 5 months in advance of release dates and, I'm pretty sure the first WB's were the round headlight models with a grey metal grille like the HQ-HZ tonner grille's and if I remember correctly, the rectangle headlight WB might have been released late 1980 or early 1981, ..so for my mind, ..definitely 80's advert
This is actually the 1981 Holden ad!
i would imagine that this is 80's early 80's cos of the 1982 VH in the add :)
Who’s here before Holden closes down???
This is one of the best tv ads for holden
But it wasn’t original !! Here’s the original American ad ruclips.net/video/zqweygy9K9Y/видео.html
70s? So that WB is actually a time machine. Cool!
And i own a nissan these days but i have always been a Holden man. My dad sold them thru the 70s and 80s all the classic models and i have owned and tamed the mighty Torana, VS Commodore and VZ SV6
Just thought I'd come back to the days where Holden's were still being manufactured in Australia, as well as still being a full-on brand. Unfortunately Holden will cease productions of all cars in 2021. We live in some depressing times, but this does take the cake. I myself prefer a Ford, but do love the OLD Holdens, unlike the pieces of crap these days. RIP you will forever be in ours hearts. :(
EDIT: Oh and also back when in the days when advertisements (like this one) were actually quality and Australia was Australia. I'd like to give a big "fuck you" to political correctness. Thanks for listening to me ramble on, have a good one Australia.
Mate you hit the nail on the head there.
Cheers mate, just wanted to express my thoughts.
Yeah I’m in my mid twenties, I’ve always been into 4WDing so never owned an Aussie car. But if there’s no Holdens and Ford falcons (even if the commodores were rebadged European cars), I’m wondering if in a decade I’ll be able to take my kids to the V8 Supercars like my Dad took me.
I reckon the government should just buy Holden off GM and reopen the factories for them and Ford, and re kickstart manufacturing in Australia, It’s really sad how the country is import only now
@@tayloryoji That's not actually such a bad idea. Let's go forth and pledge this request.
I watched this in class a month ago
Probably dates from the early '80s as the commodore only began in 1978, and that one shown is either VB (1978) or VC (1980). Hard to tell the difference, but some of the rest of this is more evocative of the1980s.
Didn't notice the VH but I did notice a few VB and VCs, and Gemini and Isuzu ute... An interesting approach of Holdens simply to slot in shots of early 80s models into an advert originally introduced in the mid-70s...
It was about this time that Holden and a couple of other manufacturers like Ford, Chrysler and the British began losing ground to the Japanese. This is when the Japanese automotive quality began to drastically improve and they offered great fuel economy, reliability and a whole host of features which were included in the price instead of the big 3 and the British where you had to pay extra for everything above the bare bones entry price.
Ford man, But this gave me pride, Then took it. Good bye aussie cars :'( Date 26th jan 2020,,
Aussie day That hurt :'(

Sadly Holden cars are no longer made in Australia😭😢😥
There is a youtube commercial from South Africa with this same tune.
Check it out.
Title is.
Braaivleis, Rugby, Sunny Skies and Chevrolet
I'm glad the kangaroos generously endorsed this product.
Now, it's more football, meat pies, Kangaroo's, and Daewoo's badged as Holden cars... But I guess that doesn't quite have the same ring to it...
I remember it well
GOOD DAY MATES MARILYN FROM CANADA LOVES PEOPLE FROM AUSTRALIA

RIP Holden
Haha my favorite commercial...
"meat pies aren't made with meat anymore"

R.I.P Holden
Goodbye Australia. Now that ad would be deemed racist and offensive because of the lack of non Australians and burkas.
Maybe they could re do this classic 70's ad with an updated version now since Holden is now sponsoring the NRL with the State of Origin, Aussie Kangaroo Test side as well the under 20's competition. Its going to be an awesome 2013 for rugby league!
Holden is my favourite car 🚗 but when they said on the news that they are not making anymore it mad me sad. I saw the Bathurst 1000 V8 super cars and to see Holden race on the mountain make me tear up Plus we won🥲🥹
WHHHHHHHYYYYY! Must you leave. Your Aussie favourite car
Love this
Did they make another version of this ad for NSW and Queensland with Rugby replacing football?
The ad is years old. Most Australians now recognise "football" as the common use name of the round ball game, as does the rest of the world, except for the USA. Our code is referred to as AFL or Rules (an abbreviation of Australian Rules).
And our game has nothing in common with Gridiron. The Rugby codes a little perhaps, Australian Rules, zero. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that 99% of Gridiron players never kick the ball.

R.I.P. Holden.... 1948-2020
Or even R.I.P. Holden 1856-2020. Given its saddle making, then horse coach then coach building for cars earlier history.

I believe that Ford Motor has or at least had at least one factory in Australia. Is that where yours was made?

we love our Meat Pies and Four n Twenty is one of them for sure and The Great Australian Taste for sure :D
RIP Aussie made Holden cars
Sad to learn what I thought was an awesome Aussie jingle was originally American.
Yeah and wait till you find out the angels am I ever gonna see your face again is a rip off of status quo song, lonely night from 1972 ..it sucks I know
Football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars
Back in the day we had a similar jingle in the states it went ..baseball hotdogs apple pie and Chevrolet....the Chevrolet caprice police cruser is a Holden, my Neighbor has a Pontiac G8 has a LS v8..chevy engine holden body and pontiac badge.nice car but the grille would look nicer holden...oh well even the new camaro is designed in Australia, built in Canada but we are lead to believe it all American..not really tho...The GTO aka holden manaro was cool same deal like G8 really a commadore .so when are we getting a maloo or ute ?..guess here it would be an el camino...
FYI, the US version of the ad was actually the original.
It was "appropriated" from GMC by GMH and adapted for Australian consumption.
Interesting.
Is that Ken Sparkes the DJ talking in this ad?......
I'd guess this version is from about 1980 - there's a WB model utility, a VB Commodore and a TF Gemini (WB was launched in 1980.)
I wonder how many people this ad offends now
I am shocked to know Aussies love football more than cricket
Australia was once a great country
@mgo26
You refer to the car as American. However, it is my understanding that Holden's were made in Australia. At least they were when this ad was made. Care to explain.
This advertisement was made in 1976.
From at least 1980 with the WB ute in it.
Best mate
Still got the football meat pies and kangaroos. no more Aussies made the holen car 🚗 Australian
Did they make a different version of this with Rugby instead of Football for NSW and Queensland?
@560287144602817 If you want to get technical, Holden's been "American" since 1931, when GM first bought them out, and they'd already been building bodies for Ford and GM for about ten years at that point.
But you should be proud of Holden! They build great cars. There's a reason this yank loves Holden and Ford Australia: Australia still builds real cars, not like most of the underpowered FWD garbage we're forced to drive in America. About all we have to be proud of any more is the Corvette.
"Incorrectly", huh?
Little known fact: the UK came up with the term, not us. It dates back to Oxford students in the late 19th century.
And how can you even say that we use the term incorrectly when this ad uses "football" to describe yet another completely different sport? Why is it Australians can use the term to describe the most popular football code in their country (without any modifiers) and we can't? Aussie footy and US football have a lot more in common than either does with soccer.
Ah classic commercial.. football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars.. and women in bikinis...
The VE isn't based on the Opel Omega. That was discontinued in 2003. The VE and VF Commodores are developed in Australia.
The VE and F use a different platform to VB-VZ Commodores which are Opel-based. The VE and F aren't Opel-based at all.

Which beach is that with boat sails? Are the Australian beaches still packed like that with the boats out too? Looks great.
No Halal or Vindaloo or MoFos to get offended back then
The reference is to Australian football, not what Americans incorrectly call soccer.
not any more.now everything of theirs is holden by name only.you are actually driving an opel, isuzu, gmc or chevrolet now.
This is an American ad. Based on Apple pie, hotdogs, baseball and chevrolet!

I do believe the WB ute is from the 1980s. Same with the Commodore, and the Gemini.
