To me it looks like they're looking to see what's at the bottom of the body of water. Like, if it was a pond they'd be full on submerging looking for stuff.
I live in England, and the local ducks (wild) who frequent a nearby canal do sometimes dip their heads underwater when edibles (not that kind) are thrown their way. Could it be that they are checking to see if they are missing anything? Regardless, Munchkin sure ♥loves ♥water!! 🤗🤗
We own ducks here in the farm and I'm pretty sure it actually is instinct. Ducks dive their heads deep in the muddy water to try and catch swimming insects or worms underneath the mud. Yes, there are insects found there, like mole crickets.
I think they do this, because its the natural thing to do when they are swimming on a pond, river or lake, and spy some tasty larva or bug under or on the survice of the water. They eat better with water. They have a bill, not a peak. They dont peck. I think water also helps them to must up hard things. 😊 Lovely Clip ❤

Perfectly normal behaviour. They are 'dabbling' for food (it's instinctive). They use their beaks to feel around for underwater vegetation (moss etc) or insects and critters. If the bowl was larger and deeper, like a pond, they'd go tail up in it...
And if one duck was doing it, that must mean there’s food. So the other duck starts. One could argue she’s tricking them so she gets more food. Not impossible, but idk much about ducks so I can’t say it’s very probable either.
Exactly. My mom owns eight beautiful ducks, all females, for the purpose of getting rid of pests on our small farm such as slugs and insects and even mosquitoes, and we get the bonus benefit of duck eggs each day as well for food instead of buying chicken eggs from the store. I helped raise them as well and they’re not even a year old yet but will be in a few weeks. That said, I’ve seen our ducks dive like this in our pond, so I can confirm it’s a natural behavior. It’s partially instinctive yet also in part learned behavior, they’re not quite born knowing exactly how to do it but they have the ingrained intuition to help them learn as they observe from their peers. Not to mention they are also curious and they study things with their eyes and their beaks in order to learn about the world around them.
I think they do it because it’s their way of looking for food a nutrients specially in mud, water, grass. But it doesn’t make sense if the food is right there in the bowl lol
Yes, insects may hide on the bottom of small rivers or shallow lakes. And they can efficiently scan and filter through that material, spit out the rocks and eat the food, that is the insects that are hiding there or just the green plants that grow in more or less shallow water. Ducks also can dive to find something to eat.

ago @EyadisticIsVibin' James has had multiple ducks over the course of 30 years, not a couple of ducks that have lived a span of 30 years lmfao. Come on dude 🦆
This is natural instinct for ducks. They forage for underwater vegetation or critters using their beaks. Try using sinking food, she’ll be super happy.
@@Swingyu_ oh that's probably because they're freeze-dried and put in a plastic bag lol I never eat them bc I think loose mushy fruit in my drink is gross but I work there and I'd believe they taste like plastic honestly 😅
It’s natural instinct for ducks to demonstrate that feeding behavior. It’s how they get bugs and things on the bottom of a pond. I’ve seen ducks do it in kiddie pools too. Lol
Ducks naturally 'sift' when near water or in ponds. Its a natural function in the wild in ponds etc.. The mud provides minerals yum yum wormies and keeps pooping very loose. All ducks do this, put less water and replace with fine shredded greens, sprinkle shell grit for calcium once a week and some meal worms occasionally too. 🇦🇺👌
Right? It's like when someone gets a pet they forget all the "animal" behaviors of that species, idk why people think that way but it's very depressing because I think it's part of a failure of humanity as a whole...
I've lived on a farm most my life and have had a lot of ducks, this really is a natural instinct when drinking for them. The duck is drinking and searching for food at the bottom like they would do in the wild in pond or puddle for worms, grubs, plant life, etc...
Most Water fowl do this because in the wild they filter mud through their "teeth" for small grubs and worms etc. Watch them in mud puddles. Regards from South Africa
As a duck owner, ducks do this on ponds, riverbeds, and puddles. It's just their natural instinct for food. Not weird behavior. They also love digging up dirt for roots and bugs. I didn't know this before I owned ducks. I wish I had because my garden's a mess. Now I know which areas of my garden to let them loose in... 😉🤣
We have had pekin ducks on and off my whole life. During migration we would have wild ducks stop over and some just atayed. I can confirm this is a natural behavior for both wild and domestic ducks.
I see ducks and geese dunk their head naturally into the water they are feeding in all the time. I go fishing, so I observe what all the animals are doing. I see ducks and geese naturally dunking their head into the water, usually to feed on seaweed on the bottom.
"What's up my ducklings, you already know who it is! Today, we're gonna do the 'Head Dunk' Challenge on the streets and see what kinda reactions we get! Be sure to like and subscribe, then hit that bell! See you in the video!"
I noticed this behavior in wild ducks as well, they submerge their heads under the water to search for tasty things to eat. I guess the primal instinct to search for food just overpowered them, even if food was available to them just above the surface; it’s not like floating food was the norm when ducks evolved :0
It's 100% natural, all my ducks do it and plenty of wild ducks can be seen doing the same. It's just how they sift through mud, shaking their head underwater forces the smaller things in the mud to flow out with the water and leaves heavier stuff like plant/bug bits
Whatever the reason for this adorable behavior…..who cares… these ducks just entertained millions of people and gave us all a huge smile.. and , these days, we all can use a smile 😃
They do this for a couple of reasons! 1. Dabbling is fun and you never know when you might nab a little fish, tadpole, or bug. 2. It's a great way to flush debris from the eye and membranes which protect it. 💁🏻♀️
She could be doing a filter feed thing that they do in the wild to turn up extra treats. Or she could be dunking her head the same way my dogs lay down in the pool after a walk.

This is natural instinct for ducks. They forage for underwater vegetation or critters using their beaks. Try using sinking food, she’ll be super happy.

I've lived on a farm most my life and have had a lot of ducks, this really is a natural instinct when drinking for them. The duck is drinking and searching for food at the bottom like they would do in the wild in pond or puddle for worms, grubs, plant life, etc...
Pov: you come to the comments to see if someone really knows why they do that
It’s probably just thirsty
maybe it feels nice
You are right! I came to the comments to see if some duck veterinarian had posted an answer.
Most Water fowl do this because in the wild they filter mud through their "teeth" for small grubs and worms etc. Watch them in mud puddles.
Regards from South Africa
Us South Africans know everything. It would be best if the ducks could get a smaller bowl for worms
You're absolutely correct, I had ducks and they used to actually bring mud to their pond to sift through it
why do i know this but the girl with ducks doesn't?
Yep. Ducks are dabblers. They're looking for food in the nonexistent mud.
why would they just start doing this randomly after five years?

As a duck owner, ducks do this on ponds, riverbeds, and puddles. It's just their natural instinct for food. Not weird behavior. They also love digging up dirt for roots and bugs. I didn't know this before I owned ducks. I wish I had because my garden's a mess. Now I know which areas of my garden to let them loose in... 😉🤣
We have had pekin ducks on and off my whole life. During migration we would have wild ducks stop over and some just atayed. I can confirm this is a natural behavior for both wild and domestic ducks.

Lmao!
I noticed this behavior in wild ducks as well, they submerge their heads under the water to search for tasty things to eat. I guess the primal instinct to search for food just overpowered them, even if food was available to them just above the surface; it’s not like floating food was the norm when ducks evolved :0
She was looking for her sanity and raven was just helping.
Maybe she lost her marbles?
All my ducks do this... I never thought it was weird or unnatural lol
It's 100% natural, all my ducks do it and plenty of wild ducks can be seen doing the same. It's just how they sift through mud, shaking their head underwater forces the smaller things in the mud to flow out with the water and leaves heavier stuff like plant/bug bits
@@nearpath8785 I'm aware, like I said, all my ducks have always done it. I never thought it was unnatural 🥰
Whatever the reason for this adorable behavior…..who cares… these ducks just entertained millions of people and gave us all a huge smile.. and , these days, we all can use a smile 😃
It’s normal. It’s called drilling. All ducks do it.
Mine do it too. Natural foraging behavior.
They do this for a couple of reasons!
1. Dabbling is fun and you never know when you might nab a little fish, tadpole, or bug.
2. It's a great way to flush debris from the eye and membranes which protect it. 💁🏻♀️

When they drink they turn their head up, so clearly that's not the case.
That’s wut I thought
Maybe they feel good doing it because doing it in nature can get them food, but they're okay with just getting water from this
@@kinga80801 they do a type of filter feeding, pulling in water and trapping stuff in their mouths
She could be doing a filter feed thing that they do in the wild to turn up extra treats. Or she could be dunking her head the same way my dogs lay down in the pool after a walk.

In* they aren’t Jesus-

@@Queen_Bread no he is correct. Ducks indeed dip their heads underwater while Searching for food in lakes for example. So they treat this water bowl as a water surface like the lake and their natural instincts kick in.

Then why would they start doing it at 5 years old? It's not an instinct thing, those start at birth, not 5 years in.
In Australia here and our local ducks do this too when feeding amongst reeds and mud. They filter food more than they chew.

try giving them some duck-treats which would sink to the bottom they'd be rly satisfied and happy to get what they searched for.
