    I was surprisingly able to understand just about every topic required for my first exam, EXCEPT Fischer projections. I watched so many videos and read through so many methods/examples on how to draw them, and nothing worked, however, this is quite literally the first and only tutorial I've come across that's actually enabled me to fully understand Fischer projections! Thank you so much!

    this is just a very good way to check my answer. in terms of understanding, it doesn't help. We need to know one of the two methods of converting a bond line to fischer which are either 1) rotate the molecule or 2) change the point of view of our selves(move our selves). The whole point of drawing a Fischer is to avoid coming up with those Rs and S configurations for compounds that have way too many stereocenters.

    At 0:30 you draw the hidden hydrogens. How do you know where the hidden hydrogens are pointing and whether or not they are ponting into the page, out of the page, or in line with the page?

  • @MasterOrganicChem
    @MasterOrganicChem  11 лет назад

    We know because carbon is tetrahedral; three of the orientations are known, and we can therefore deduce the fourth. For example the C attached to Cl, has two C-C bonds (in the page) and the C-Cl bond is a wedge. Therefore the "hidden" C-H bond will be a dash. For the C with the "dashed" C-OH bond, the C-H bond is a wedge.

    Well THANK YOU, that's exactly what I've been looking for the whole evening. As a French first year medical student I could really use a little help in organic chemistry, I'm immediately subscribing to your channel.
    Isn't there a faster way to get to Fischer projections though ? My chemistry teacher taught us some way to go straight to the Fischer projection, without using the whole (R) and (S) method, but I didn't totally got it... so I'm not sure I would be able to explain it. It would be great if you knew what I'm talking about and could explain it better..! Or any method which is faster (to set the scene, first medschool year in France ends with a competition where time really is counted).
    Thank you in advance, nice job, keep going!

    Quick question, does it matter which to put at the top and bottom or not, you didn't cover that, I would've thought that H and OH we're supposed to be there since they're both dashed in relation to the strangling method so why arent they there? Or am I missing out something? 😩
