Making a Ball Gown in Two Days

  • Hi Everyone!
I’m taking on a huge project in today’s video. I’m making a ball gown! True to form, I left myself almost no time to make/acquire a gorgeous gown for a masquerade ball. With time running out and a tight budget I decided that I’m going to make myself a beautiful gown Cinderella herself would be thrilled to wear.
The first step was to acquire fabric. I took to the internet and found TulleShop. They had just what I need, tons of tulle and satin for decent prices. ( I’ll link it below).
After work on Monday the 11th, I crossed my fingers and placed my order. The tracking function was cool and I watched my fabric drive across country to Minnesota. At 6:00 a.m. on Monday the 18th my package was about 20 minutes down the highway from me at the FedEx center. I was less than thrilled that it took another two days to make its way to my door from there. But on Wednesday, the 20th I had my fabric! I raced home after work to get to work sewing a ball gown. My event was that Saturday!
If you’ve seen my previous sewing video, (sewing an evening cloak: • Sewing an Evening Cloa... ), you know that I can work a sewing machine, but that’s about it. The good news is that I’m fairly creative and have a lifetime of arts and crafts experience behind me. So even if it’s not perfect, I can make it look pretty good. The trick is to use forgiving fabrics and not go for the ultra-structured looks. A fluffy tulle skirt is so much more forgiving than a tailored, precision seamed silk sheath!
I started by getting my string out of the para cord (don’t do this, just buy strong cord!) Draping the tulle (108 inch width) over the thread (so that it’s 54 inches hanging on either side). Then I hand sewed a thread beneath my cord so it couldn’t move. This wasn’t tight, or precise, just a loose channel that would hold the cord in place that I could cinch.
Next is to cinch the tulle on the thread and cord so make it the tightest bunch of cinched fabric that you can. (Think long tutu for the shape). Continue this until most of the fabric is used. (Sounds simple, but this is a daunting task. Not actually difficult, just slow).
Take a long strip of satin and sew it to the skirt. Flip the satin over and sew it again. Once more, just for good measure. Seam up the ends to make pretty ribbons and that’s the skirt!
Next the top. First off: cheat! A black cami with the straps crossed over your neck is the base. To give it some glamour, take a length of tulle, fold it over on itself and stitch the ends together to make a circle. Instructions for wearing are in the video.
Seems weird to say “that’s it!” for something that took 8 hours to make, but that’s it! The dress turned out beautifully! I’m thrilled! (And more than a bit proud of myself.)
I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

So many "why didnt u do it this way" comments (too many if u ask me). anyhow theres so many ways of creating garments. It all made sense in your head, you executed it as best as you knew how at the time. You looked and felt beautiful which is really all that matters. You know, thanks for sharing your video. I loved it! Everyone else should just do the same. U seem like a smart girl and I'm sure if u had the "TIME" you would have watched a million videos on how to create the fastest, most biggest, princess like gown in less than 1-2 days! ❤❤

Are you making your own veil as well? Even if you aren't, can I suggest that you buy a veil parent and use the directions to help you gather your skirt? I suggest this because I learned how to gather tulle by making my friend her wedding veil. She wanted one we saw at David's Bridal for like 185 dollars and I made it for 13 including the pattern. (I also did custom beading on it that was very easy, but I'm not counting that in the price because I had beads already for crafting stuff). I bought mine because I found one for 14 dollars at Michaels and it just wasn't worth it to sew one because I just wanted a plain veil which was exactly what I found. Anyway I'm getting off track. The veil pattern directions were fantastic and showed me exactly how to sew the tulle to gather it perfectly and then resew it to hold the gathers perfectly. It is similar to what this girl did, after gathering you sew it again (onto something if you wish) and it stays, but I would hate to have to hand sew fifty yards of fabric. If you don't buy the pattern, just sew a very long straight stitch about a quarter of an inch away from the folded edge. Then at one end, tie the tip and bottom threads together so they cannot pull out. Then at the other end, grab the top or bottom thread and pull. Depending on your tension, one thread will pull easier than the other so find the one that wants to pull easiest. When you have the whole thing gathered to the length you you want it, tie the ends so it cannot loosen (and cut the extra of course). Then take some time adjusting the gathers to be even. I suggest buying a length of wide satin ribbon and doing like this girl did, sew one side first close to the edges of the skirt and ribbon, then fold over and sew the other side over the top. You could also by some gorgeous beaded appliqués to put over the ribbon belt. Good Luck!

You are wearing this on your wedding day ? As your wedding dress ?
And the groom and his family and yours are fine with it ? And more importantly, YOU are fine with this ?
Allison, there are hundreds of thousands of wedding dress patterns out there for all budgets . Don't do that on your wedding day .
Is your wedding day , still far away ? If so let me help you . I have worked in the fashion industry my aunt is Premiere for Stephane Rolland, started at YSL. Let me call her and get you some patterns, she lives in France , i live in Switzerland but i will gladly send you the patterns wherever you are . You can't do this on your wedding day Allison , chance are you are going to mess up and find yourself with no gown, three days from the wedding and you won't even be able to find a quick last minute replacement . And Girl , you don't want Tulle around your neck . Tulle is VERY itchy and the second you wear it , you will start to feel the discomfort , and god forbids you even sweat , Tulle and Water don't go together at all, and it becomes ten times itchier.
Allison , even if i have to show you personally how to tailor and stitch a wedding gown step by step and help you find the real fabric which will make wearing the gown a wonderful experience , i will. But do not make the mistake of walking down the aisle with this ,..... dress . No i wont be a hypocrite, i have too much self respect, this is not a ....dress , no offense startset, this is crap, pure and simple, this is crap of biblical proportion. You are better off wearing a dress from GAP or ZARA , this will be less tragic.
Girl , don't do that , trust an old gay guy who has spent over 10 years in the fashion industry , you do not want to try making this, let alone wear it .
I will help you, you have my word .

Literally 10 minutes of messing with a para-cord. Jump to 9:53 for interesting bits. The skirt really is lovely, however the top really lets it down. With a skirt like that you need structure and shape for the top. A cheap black satin corset would have done at a pinch and looked a million times better, IMO. But I hope you had fun at the ball.

@@jennym007 Oh honey.... No. Don't put words in my mouth. Aside from a comment on the length of time we had to watch her playing with paracord, *I said the skirt was lovely but was let down by the top and would look better with something else*. THAT IS ALL I SAID. I made a suggestion as to what would work better. It's called constructive criticism. I wasn't mean. I didn't criticise her hard work nor her effort to create something great in a short amount of time nor put her down for trying to create something like this on a shoestring budget. I did not say I could do it better. (Pro tip, I understand fashion and garment construction to know what works and what doesn't.) It goes without saying that if she has the time in future, it might be something she could take on board for a new project, OR NOT. It goes without saying that that if she had the time or extra funds to go that extra step, she might have, OR NOT. I made the suggestion. THAT IS ALL. Incredible that you can't understand the concept of constructive criticism. But I guess you get everything perfect first go so you don't need to.

This was a great attempt for a first-timer. But I worked at a craft store for 3.5 years....there are SO many easier ways to do this! Firstly is the same comment as everyone else: the hand-sewing of the waistline was unnecessary. So was the paracord: elastic is your friend, and you can even add a zipper or snap closure to it.
Also; why wouldn't you just buy a long petticoat to go underneath? They're fairly cheap & would've provided you with most of the "poofiness" you were looking for without all the trouble. From there, you just have to create an overskirt; a couple layers of tulle sewn to the elastic waistband, use the satin as a lining on an upper layer, with a tippy-top layer of more tulle for added effect. sew on the ribbon waistband exactly as you did, and voila! You can even sew the outer skirt to the petticoat if you just want a single item to keep track of.
For the top, a fitted corset wouldve looked BOMB, & you can find neat ones online for less than $50 (though you do get what you pay for, quality-wise. cheap is good for a couple single nights out, but will lose shape over time). Or you can make your own custom one- there are plenty of patterns you can buy at a craft store to work off of.

If you're going to make a tulle skirt in this way, and plan on wearing it during the wedding and reception, it will itch like hell and you'll be miserable. You should make or buy a full slip for a ball gown. Then you can cut part of the length off ,if you buy it. You can gather the tulle and stitch along the bottom of the slip. If you have no clue about sewing the slip you can always cheat. Take the measurements from your waist to how long you want the slip to be. Use this as a radius, and cut out one giant circle. Cut a hole in the middle for your waist. Make sure you take seam allowance into consideration. Because you have to fold the seam down at the waist and stitch it. You can use a drawstring or put some elastic in when you do the waist hem. But take it from someone who had a big ball gown with tulle petticoats for their wedding. Tulle is itchy. Don't use the method in this video.

Wow! So simple but so effective. My daughter lives in a residential place due to complex health requirements & her disabilities that require 1:1 & 2:1 care. It was her 18th birthday this year & she wanted a Strictly Come Dancing themed birthday. Sadly we had a strict lockdown & she couldn’t have family or friends with her for her birthday. I also didn’t get given her up to date measurements until now to make her dress. I have spent ages trying to find a simple but effective dress or skirt pattern that I could make her a swishy dress. As she is in a wheelchair she can’t have so much fabric at the back of her dress or she wouldn’t fit into her moulded to shape wheelchair. But your video has given me the inspiration I needed to make her dress. I will make the front of her skirt like you did, but I will add a satin layer beneath it to prevent a scratchy feeling on her legs. And a thinned out version at the back. I am going to make a wide boob tube top that can be attached at the waistband to make it easier for her to get dressed in it. Then I will add two really long straps to the front so that the top can be an infinity style dress/top. Then she can wear it in whichever style top she feels like on the day. I will put it in her Christmas Eve box as a surprise for her to wear Christmas Day if she wishes to. You helped me bring all my ideas together with this video & I wish to thank you for your help. I really hope you enjoyed your masquerade ball & still have this skirt to pull out for future events. I hope you are staying safe & well this year. Fingers crossed we will all have a much better year coming to us.

So the standard in the industry is that gathers are 1.5 to 1. Then, the tulle is cut to that measurement. The fullness is maintained by layering multiple layers of tulle onto a waistband. It looks more like RTW then. Good Lord, you made so much xtra work for yourself. Keep on truckin’

I think it's great for what it is. I would have added a scarf of tulle down the back to cover the tank, or a giant bow. That or used the satin to make a tube like top with the tulle scarf over.
