In the morning, we set off on an undulating path that showcases the quintessential charm of the High Weald. Our journey commences with a slightly extended route to the idyllic Mottsmill Stream, providing us with an immersive experience right from the start. As we progress, we encounter a choice of paths: one along an open ridge, boasting breathtaking panoramic views, and another through a secluded valley, immersing us in a tranquil ambiance. Along the way, we pass through the charming village of Groombridge, which flourished with the advent of the railway, adding historical significance to our expedition.
As we transition into the afternoon section, our adventure continues from Old Groombridge. Our path takes us past the majestic Groombridge Place, an exquisite Jacobean manor house encircled by a medieval moat. Delighting in its splendor, we then follow the railway line briefly, tracing the enchanting Grom valley before venturing into Broadwater Forest. This captivating area, acquired by the RSPB in 2007 and now known as the Broadwater Warren nature reserve, welcomes us with its untouched beauty (free entry). Additionally, we encounter another nature reserve managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust at the southern end of the woods. During our journey, we have the privilege of marveling at one of the magnificent sandstone outcrops in the region, Eridge Rocks, adding a touch of awe-inspiring grandeur to our experience.
