Something that I really liked about Battlefield 3's campaign, that I missed from BF 4 (not counting 1 or V since they are in other settings) is having the chance to see the Russians perspective instead of the typical "Americans good, Russia bad"
It's trying to portray a realistic depiction of a war between two nations who do not want to fight but get to fight each other because a third party brought the hatred against each other to them. It's a confusing but realistic detail that both are seeing the other side of the aggressor yet the true aggressor was behind in the shadow, waiting for it to be a setup. Wayyyy smarter story telling than the usual Murica good [insert country] bad.
This scene has been explained by the book (Battlefield: The Russian) with more details At the point of Sgt. Blackburn shot Cpt. Cole, was already stressed out, not only because his friends were dead, but also because of Cole pressuring his men for his own promotion. (This is mentioned during the Night shift) Not only that, according to the book, Blackburn was also mentally struggling due to Cole, in contrast, he was a very straight dude who was adapting to the war at the start. He already got a huge hatred towards Cole at that point for these reasons. We can actually know how Cole was considered in Misfit units during PFC Dave Montes', who didn't even consider his leader as a member at that point, quote on the last second of Rock and a Hard Place; "There's no we. There's just us (Surviving Misfit members), and then there's you (Cole)." During this mission, according to the book, Blackburn was actually buried by a bit of rubble while entering the building, pieces of rubble after .50 cal struck some walls, I assume. Dima, who was "Asking" Kaffarov, helped him and Blackburn gave a bit of respect and gained trust in Dima. They actually talked a bit more longer than what the game showed and Dima managed to successfully convince Blackburn that Solomon was onto something and the fact he needed his help. However, Cole, who heard and saw Blackburn talking with Dima, ordered Blackburn to shoot Dima, which he refused. As Cole raised the gun towards both of them, Blackburn shot Cole in maybe self-defense/hatred. I wish this was in the game, as I believe it could've been in the game easily. It would've explained to the players more quickly why Blackburn shot Cole because while we all know who Dima is and his purpose, from Blackburn's perspective, it's an enemy he just met and told him to help him, in contrast, even though he almost mentally tortured Blackburn, Cole was a guy who worked with him for ages, starting from Operation Swordbreaker at least 8 months. Considering these, we can only see Blackburn as a traitor.
Thanks for explaining, this is information I never really knew untill now and it reveals a lot about why some of the events happened and meanings of quotes
