I felt the same way upon first seeing it. But it stuck with me. I found myself still thinking about it often. Eventually, I felt obliged to rewatch it, and afterward, something just clicked. It's now one of my favorite films. Maybe you'll feel the same one day.
Come to think of it, Titanic is also technically like The English Patient and Citizen Kane - with the story being told through flashbacks. Although I guess it's more like one, very long flashback with a couple of transition scenes between the past and the present. It's not as fragmented as the other two movies.
Exactly, I don't have an issue with Titanic's structure... (It's the characters and the social commentary that I have an issue with, but we'll get there lol)
This guy's take on Ralph Fiennes comes clearly from other takes. The best playing sidekicks or villains means he didn't see Grand Budapest Hotel, A Bigger Splash, or The Constant Gardner.
To be fair, the book that the film is based on IS about Hannah (the nurse), and not the so called "romance," which is only one chapter. It's been decades since I have read the book, or seen the movie, but that I remember.
I ranked this movie 60th out of the 95 Best Pictures. I liked the character of Hana and the cinematography in the desert was good. The sandstorm scene in the desert was compelling. I agree that the characters (except Hana and Kip) are not likeable.
Anna Karenina is way more nuanced, and is set in a very different time and social climate. I love Anna Karenina, but the adultery in the English Patient bothered me, too.
So many comments on films being robbed at the oscars etc., - why look at a movie through the "awards" lense at all? If audiences (not necessarily everyone) enjoyed a movie, isnt that the real prize already?
Ah, Titanic next. The flick that inspired those absolutely bonkers animated Titanic movies with a rapping dog, Mexican mice, dolphins that can talk to people thanks to magic moon beams, an evil underwater gang of sharks, a giant octopus with a puppy's face and even Atlantis. Yes, the survivors of the Titanic go search for it in a submarine and find Atlantis.
I find it hilarious that there is going to be two Best Picture winners in which Colin Firth was cheated on. I’m surprised you went with the review without mentioning Seinfeld. Oh and hello Miramax…
"The English Patient" is a complete non-entity for me. It is the first of the remaining Best Picture winners that I have not seen and have no intention of seeing. For me, "Jerry Maguire" was the film that year. Kind-of the last hurrah of the big studio nominees before the Academy began their chronic fixation for Indie films (a major factor the last few years). Sorry to hear you did not fully enjoy "Citizen Kane" as it is one of my favorite films (aside from "Casablanca" of course); which was definitely robbed at the Awards. Looking forward to your comments on "Titanic" although I am not as enamored with it as others (never have been).
Ha! And here we go with the triple dare - I dared you with Out of Africa, and I dare you here to tell my mother that this movie is bad. As to what to like: it's a well-acted, well-starred romance. That's literally it. As someone who by sheer osmosis saw it more than ten times as a teen - there is nothing to it, but it's not bad on its own. Why it won? Because by Academy standards, it had ZERO competition. Not only it was a bad year overall, but the only decent movie that year was Fargo (and it's nowhere near as good as its fame goes), which by default and design is an anti-Oscar movie. So here we are: the least bad pick, rather than the best of good ones.
This is how I feel with every Terrence Malick film. In my opinion, that man is a completely talentless hack, who makes overly long boring and pretentious films. I was honestly shocked by how short "Days of Heaven" actually was, when I finished it. 90 minutes. It felt like Bertolucci's 1900. He should have forever stayed away from filmmaking after his two 1970s films. And his 21st century films are literally just landscape and city shots with bloated and empty narration. They are bland piles of shit, that everyone calls art.
Some people don't have the patience for the English Patient. It's a beautiful film.
This film is elegant and conveys one to an entirely different world. A must see.
This movie isn't a romance. It's a truly heart breaking love story. If you haven't been deeply, deeply in love, then you might not get it.

Sad you didnt like it. To me it has an elegance and a rhythm you rarely find
I agree. Something about it always captivates me and when it's on I watch it, everytime.
Looking forward to seeing where Crash from 2006 ranks on the list.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I found it majestic and moving, with a superb score!

Or _Quiz Show_
West Side Story was best picture the year I was born. I can assure you, everybody hated this film on it's release.

I shudder to think what you might be think of Tolstoy’s great novel, Anna Karenina, the story of adulteress.
Actually he speaks to me...I am so bored of Hollywood adultery movies
I probably won't like it then :)

Wow, first comment. I always look forward to your reviews, D.B. Be safe out there.
Thank you very much!:)
1:01 to answer your question, D.B., you only have to look at the studio that released the film
I really don’t agree a lot with your comments, but I do agree that Citizen Kane is difficult to watch. I never put Citizen Kane high on any list.
English patient was good... But not great. Fargo is incredible but trainspotting should had been in conversation
Good review
You said: “I just don’t like this film”. That’s ok. But do you really think the people care about your feelings in the video? Good luck
Dude, you don't owe me nothing, and I don't owe you nothing. If you like my video, good. If you don't, good.
That's it.

Oh and hello Miramax…
Yea never looked good to me. As soon as you mentioned out of africa, I knew I was going to stay away lol
Lol. I really liked the English Patient, but I agree that it winning best picture over Fargo was a travesty.

I agree with Elaine. This movie sucks.

I guess I half agree. I liked Badlands and the Thin Red Line. Never seen Days of Heaven, and The Tree of Life was meh...
To each to their own not everyone will click with Malick but to call him a talentless hack is a wild take 🤣
Good review. The movie didn't make any sense. Horrible characters
Hated this film
