54:50 Magic player here regarding the “new mascot”: Yes we have concerns and it’s as you say, he was designed to fill the Pikachu mascot role to attract zoomers to a game whose average player is in their mid-30s. But the thing about Loot is that it’s indicative of a larger trend in Magic right now, you might call it the Marvelisation of Magic. The game was always known for its dark serious themes and some storylines from the past have even unsettled me deeply. We love those stories but in the last few years, the stories have become noticeably sanitised with no stakes and a complete lack of character consistency from set to set. I have examples but it will be too long if I explain them all. The TLDR is that it’s clear WotC and Hasbro have been busy transforming the games lore into potential plushie advertisements instead of getting their act together regarding the narrative quality. To Yugioh players it might seem strange because Yugioh is full of cute mascots that seem at odds with the giant robots and dragons in your game but Magic has always had a strong narrative component and we can feel the decline in quality in our hearts
Being unhygenic is rude. Just like talking loudly on the phone is rude. Just like taking unsolicited pictures or staring is rude. Just like touching someone without permission is rude. We have let this become a problem.
I remember i went to a new place to play and i dueled a guy who was so stinky that his cards even stank. I wanted to trade for his gold rare Mourner and the card smelled like old nickels and ass.
About the Cinna story: even though she herself doesn’t play Yugioh she used to stream and play games a lot with DotoDoya, Seereax and Rhymestyle who are Yugioh players themselves. So because she has that association that’s probably why they sent her that box. Which holy shit, if I got my hands on a box of Bandai Yugioh cards those things would be in like a vault or super sturdy safe
Realm of Light was my first structure deck, I was too young when the original classics came out so Minerva and Michael were the first monsters I saw that I bought with my own money
Yeah so my whole life I always thought the whole gamer guy = smelly was just a myth until I actually experienced it myself and it changed my life forever. 2016. Pokémon Day. Went to a Gamestop to get whatever it was they were giving out. I was in line that was going slowly and I was behind a big guy. (No hate, I'm big too) This guy.. man let me tell you.. This guy was covered in sweat! He was wearing a gray shirt, half his shirt was just sweat stain. He had a giant Five Guys soda cup that he was drinking and his neck was the worst part! Dude was latino, same as me, so think of slightly tan skin. The back of his neck was literally black, fucking onyx obsidian black, like he hadn't showered in god knows how long. I was behind this guy for like 10 minutes and my eyes and nose were crying. That experience pretty much traumatized me and like I said, I'm a big guy too so ever since then I make sure that I leave the house smelling like flowers. Lotion everywhere, yes EVERYWHERE. I even got so worried about how I would smell that I would ask my female coworkers that I was super cool with if I smelled at work and they were like "no, why are you so worried ? Lol" It sucks cause I love anime and would love to go to a con but I'm scared it might stink so bad that I can't handle it.
Tournaments and conventions can be PUTRID sometimes. I'd say things have gotten a little better in recent years since there's more of a stigma around showing up smelling bad, but there's still a lot of work to be done.
@@apsamplifier Only takes one particularly nasty individual to ruin an entire area. There was an entire family like that in the supermarket once, and you could smell them throughout the entire aisle even though they left the aisle a full minute prior.

Regarding games requiring internet to install them even from a physical disk: I remember when this started being a thing with the PS4. You'd put the disk in to install a game and it'd try to download the whole game from the internet, instead of just the updates to it. If you knew to turn off the console's internet ahead of putting the disk in, it would install the base game from the disk, making the process much faster overall. Are they seriously gonna start having the game not be on the disk at all now??

Maybe a topic for next week, or perhaps a separate video entirely but they just revealed the Cyber Dragon decklist for the tactical trial deck in the OCG, and it's very playable out of the box. 1100 yen which is about 7 USD, and comes with multiples of staples like having 2x Ash Blossom and Maxx C, a main deck Droplet, Imperm, Triple Tac and Thrust. Smashing 2 of them together would basically make a competent, tournament ready Cyber Dragon deck and I am excited to see the other decklists. This is the kind of product I'd love to see in all card games, where you can get something viable out of the box for a very reasonable price.

I think the main problem with Loot is that it's an ongoing problem of Magic going from a competitive card game and the recent overflow of just MtG making products just to make money and Loot is just a confirmation of problems that already exist. If things weren't so heavy handed in their like, greed, Loot would be fine. But everything lately has just been so forced that it's getting.. yes, its a social gathering, but for some to most yugioh players, by the way I have experienced, the one locals day is the only day they mingle with people, outside of work and school. many players have an outcast ostracized syndrome of social awkwardness...they are rude, first of all, which wouldn't pass in the real world....and simply lack assessment of surrrounding social queues....I have multiple decks, but I purchase cards solely for my own pleasure....i stopped attending local events in general, I found most people playing this game very distasteful.
I'm planning on moving to Japan in around a year for college and this is upsetting they have nasty smelling players over there too. I think the stink situation boils down to the type of player card games attract in general. Theres nothing we can do about it unless strict rules are enforced.
Regarding getting big video games cheaply AND legally: I started borrowing them from libraries. You'd be surprised the selection that some library networks have. You don't own the game of course, but depending on the game it doesn't really matter that you have to bring it back (and you can always borrow it again at a later date, if you want)
What do you guys think about a new game mechanic that I think would be cool where you have an "extra main deck". Basically 3-5 cards face down in a new zone that are main deck cards that can only be used when added from deck to hand except drawing, special summoned from deck or set from the deck. It'd add so much to deck building, help decks that need a lot of bricks to play be usable and it's not a complicated concept to add to the game.
Magic doesn't have a truly recognizable mascot. Jace and Chandra are the most popular characters and they're used in marketing a lot, but Magic has always had recognizability problems, and it doesn't help that the story moves along and may change or kill characters. That said, the controversy around Loot is complete and utter nonsense (which is sadly half of Magic discourse). It's a new character in the story that happens to be a cute creature. There's no marketing push. Players just really hate some aspects of the game and/or Wizards (which is fine) but they like to rationalize it into really dumb stuff.
Something I will add to this is that Magic is EXTREMELY receptive of players' opinions. We don't get stuff pushed to us, we get stuff that we've indicated we like. Favorite characters and cards are referenced or get new versions everytime there's a revisit. Jace and Chandra weren't made to be popular; they were made, they became popular, and then we started seeing them a lot. Forgettable or disliked characters, worlds, mechanics, etc. are left out all the time. If the players decide they don't like Loot, he will fill his role in the story, and then they'll get rid of him and we'll never see him again.
Dear Paul, i absolutely love the shirt you wore in this episode of the Podcast. It looks so stunning. Where did you buy it? Thanks in advance. Michael (unfortunately not the Lightsworn one XD)
Hoping you both look into Tenpai as this deck is going to very easily be capable of turning the current Tier 0 situation into a 2 deck Tier 0 situation, like the Dragon Rulers/Spellbooks. The deck, as part of a basic one card combo, puts out 37,000 damage easily. It's a combo deck that play as many consistency cards that halve damage as it wants and still kill. I pray it doesn't turn out as bad as Snake-Eye did.
I think that if you put a hard limit on how many times you can special from extra deck then the game would slow down. Special from hand or deck as many times as you want but something like 3 extra deck cards per turn would stop huge combos. But then the counter is, would control decks just dominate as they don't need the extra deck much
The smelly thing is very correct....im a guy and when i went to locals it stinks...it smells like virgin hard times....they dont have a life besides playing a tcg so nothing else matters they will pay hundreds on packs but qont buy hygienic products
Loot is for sure made for the purpose of marketing cos there shouldnt already be merch of Loot when their only appearance so far involves two thoughtto be M.I.A. characters in Jace and Vraska.
It isn't strange to have accessories featuring the characters from the current set. Loot was probably going to be the face of BIG before it was cancelled as a standalone set.
Sad to hear about the 3DS online service (though Pokemon is probably the only big loss for me). That Xbox 360 is sunsetting the store and marketplace this summer hurts a lot more, and some of the game servers like Halo have been down for a couple of years now. That one is huge for me because the Xbox 360 defined my teenage years. Sad to see online features for some of these pioneering consoles going away. Truly an end of an era
100% agree with alecs take on Rebirth. Would rather have more of a 1 to 1. Love most of the story beat changes (not the ending), but traversing the world and the minigames annoyed the shit out of me.
On mtg we literally have THE cute set coming later this year so putting this in was a little on the nose I don't mind the design but the story was a bit odd.
But they serve the same function. Whether they're spending fewer resources to brush up an existing game or are spending more to completely build a lookalike from the ground up, they are still choosing to make a game that is a rerelease of a game they have already made instead of coming up with new ideas and adding to the medium.
@@sallas09 most of the time remakes add in a lot of quality of life features that remasters do not. Also remakes will usually change different aspects of gameplay, level design and story structure and are created from the ground up. Just look at The Last of Us Part 1, Demons Souls, RE2, RE3, RE4 and FFIV Remake/Rebirth. They make it a similar but still difference experience overall. Nostalgia is the key marketing strategy for both remasters and remakes but remasters are just ports but on current specs so now have a sharper resolution, no performance. The nice thing about remasters are they are likely games that are very expensive to buy in the secondary market so it allows people to be able to purchase a game at a reasonable price.
I don't think it looked as good, but 2ds is a tank conpared to the original DS (the screens may be exposed, but it doesn't suddenly break in half making the top screen useless either). I'm glad it can play original DS ganes as well. I only wish it could still play GBA like the original...
I want to do an experiment with those so call players who don't care for the lore or the card artwork for Yu-Gi-Oh and just want to win, if they'll have just as much fun with Yu-Gi-Oh as if I just took a note card, wrote the effect down, and have them use that for their deck instead.
@@apsamplifier I really hope that isn't the case, otherwise TCG isn't for them at all. If they have that kind of attitude they're better off playing a game that involves a 52 card deck instead
Neuron is fine but man it fucking kills your battery(using the life point counter atleast). On the topic of smelly players. I've been pretty lucky 13 years at the same locals and it's been a very rare issue. Thankfully.
Loot absolutely sticks out like a sore thumb and doesn't really fit into the world of magic. it's one thing to have a cute mascot like pikachu that fits into the them of the world but with the world of magic we have the borg and eugenics as parts of our main storylines. Loot is marketing first and lore second when it should be the reverse of that, that's the main issue. Also we already have Fblthp!
Given the build-up before we _saw_ the thing, it's not like marketability was crossing my mind. Odd as Loot was to see, such wasn't even a concern before I caught up with "the discourse". I'll agree with y'all when we see what else happens here and if it fails to measure up. I am expecting a monstrous glow-up at some point, tho.
@@christopherb501 really? i mean for one thing. stories are rushed through at insane rate compared to the old days and sets are getting pushed out faster and faster. ixalan came out in half the time we usually get between sets. and this thing just REEKS of marketable plushie. im just waiting to find out he was locked up for war crimes. that thing terrifies me. Also they called him LOOT. That could have only been worse of he hsd been named By-our Products!
I saw a video a while ago that the best deck if everything was at 3 would be Exodia. All those broken draw cards and and floodgates it'd be very easy to get Exodia in a few turns. Traditional, I'd say F/OTK. A shame Konami doesn't support Traditional.
Wish we'd been able to get the news before we recorded the pod! They're very promising, but I doubt Konami releases them in the TCG. We rarely get to have nice things!

36:38 i disagree too, japan gets so much stuff, ( cheaper raritys, more fun products, exclusive cards, ETC) it would be nice to get a little stuff
if i played against someone who smelled that bad, i would call judge and try to argue they shouldnt be allowed to compete.
There's actually a new tournament policy for that now too
Regarding getting big video games cheaply AND legally:
I started borrowing them from libraries. You'd be surprised the selection that some library networks have. You don't own the game of course, but depending on the game it doesn't really matter that you have to bring it back (and you can always borrow it again at a later date, if you want)
Great Podcast
What do you guys think about a new game mechanic that I think would be cool where you have an "extra main deck". Basically 3-5 cards face down in a new zone that are main deck cards that can only be used when added from deck to hand except drawing, special summoned from deck or set from the deck. It'd add so much to deck building, help decks that need a lot of bricks to play be usable and it's not a complicated concept to add to the game.
Alec is VERY ADAMANT in the products he pushes for and I'm all for it LOLOL
For Star Wars Outlaws, you probably need internet connection because they couldn't fit all of the data onto one disc
I'll be honest when I first saw Loot, I thought to myself aw a mascot and an adoption in one. Let's see how this goes.
12:35 , honestly the lore makes me wanna play a snake eyes/ whitewoods/ etc deck lol
Dear Paul, i absolutely love the shirt you wore in this episode of the Podcast. It looks so stunning. Where did you buy it? Thanks in advance. Michael (unfortunately not the Lightsworn one XD)

I want lots of HD remakes of all my childhood favorites. Sometimes it's hard going back to outdated graphics, or worse, outdated controls and UI.
I like to relax and sleep with this podcast!!!
But then the counter is, would control decks just dominate as they don't need the extra deck much
Cinna? My worlds are colliding.
People forget that Link to the Past was around 90 dollars when released on the SNES
Who would have thought the tactical advantage would work
Waiting for more Amazoness support 😅💯
Paper Mario Thousand Year Door needed the remake. It's 60+ for a used copy of the GameCube version.
I like your Final Fantasy shirt Paul
Tearlament (mostly) and Dragon link (as a tear counter) are the traditional format meta from what I’ve seen 😂
They're remaking Beyond Good & Evil? I loved that game! I still have my GameCube copy.
Caught the premiere at work lwts gooo!!
Konami didn’t make that rule years ago for no reason lol
Pendulums are amazing 🤩
100% agree with alecs take on Rebirth. Would rather have more of a 1 to 1. Love most of the story beat changes (not the ending), but traversing the world and the minigames annoyed the shit out of me.
Still can't believe the called Colorless "Clorless", like.... wtf
Wassup APS and Friends
On mtg we literally have THE cute set coming later this year so putting this in was a little on the nose I don't mind the design but the story was a bit odd.
should I audibly tell a player if they reek?
Shower realm
Stinkbugs on Yugioh tournaments? So what's new, everyone knows REAL Yugioh players never shower or touch grass!
Remakes and remastered are two different things
Well it won't improve the rep of duelist
i am only onboard with remakes/remastered games like FF7 and Demon Souls
I just want Super Quantum Layer support
I don't think it looked as good, but 2ds is a tank conpared to the original DS (the screens may be exposed, but it doesn't suddenly break in half making the top screen useless either). I'm glad it can play original DS ganes as well. I only wish it could still play GBA like the original...
Hope i can get to meet you guys one day
Snake-Eyes Poplar Plushy when?
They really should! I hate playing against the card but it would make for great merch.
Tenpai has a poplar. They using the poki drago 😂
I want to do an experiment with those so call players who don't care for the lore or the card artwork for Yu-Gi-Oh and just want to win, if they'll have just as much fun with Yu-Gi-Oh as if I just took a note card, wrote the effect down, and have them use that for their deck instead.
Legitimately, I think some people wouldn't even mind that. Which is a bit of a shame.
What did y'all think of that Cyber Dragon Tactical Try-Deck?
That they would never print that for the TCG.
@@NaNa_W4NT5_F3MNM5 Not only that they will probably reprint the Cyberdark Structure deck and call it a day.
Wish we'd been able to get the news before we recorded the pod! They're very promising, but I doubt Konami releases them in the TCG. We rarely get to have nice things!
A "pre-rolled" ad? Well, it is almost 420, get your pre-rolled ready!
Man i know you guys didnt just praise the pokemon gen 4 remakes 😂 youre both smarter than that thats the first remake to add literally nothing
I enjoyed those games because I enjoyed the originals, so it was fine to me.
Yugioh players at my lgs smell like weed, bo, and smoke.
I swear the game is so similar to raw gambling at a casino that people smell the same.
This made me lose my drink
@apsamplifier Hey its true. Yugioh is so focused around the first 5 cards that you draw that it's similar to slots when it comes to that dopamine hit.
I like that AI artwork has made some creative endeavers more accessible to the average person.
@@anthonyw.8103 I like it for personal use, but if someone isn't paying the artists who the AI pulled the data from, then they should be fine with people not paying them for the results.
If the game was free, with zero GATCHA, pure 100% free, then I think it would be fine.
