      I didn't like that series. I like discussions like this like basic podcast format, but I thought the idea of guessing who has "the wrong opinion" was weird when opinions don't usually have an objectionable standard. It's just whatever someone thinks about something.

    • @zoombye8806
      @zoombye8806 Год назад +7

      @@spicymemes7458It wasn't who had the wrong opinion, it was who was lying about their opinion. Magical Hat's problem was discussing very specific topics, so it got very subjective and you got situations where the more casual players(farfa and coder most of the time), end up ganging up on the eccentric opinions (rotation, floodgates, tearlamemts to name a few).
      This video is better in the sense that it's more of a general discussion with different mindset, so its more formal.

    I ironically got back into yu-gi-oh after watching Rarrans video about master duel and his critique of yu-gi-oh as a whole. After not having played the game since 2016 (around the time zoodiac was popular) and only playing hearthstone and mtg in the meantime, I feel like it's a completetly different game now, but I actually like all the crazy combos you can pull off that are impossible in other games. That being said, some aspects of modern yu-gi-oh are definetely frustrating, especially the whole 'negating everything your opponent does' style of play. I feel like if the game goes back to being more interactive outside of dropping handtraps, it's actually a lot of fun if you're willing to put in the time. But of course,this is only my opinion as someone who returned to the game and I can't speak for those who never played it at all.

    • @Honest_Mids_Masher
      @Honest_Mids_Masher Год назад +12

      Tbh this take isn't wrong at all though by now it's less of handtraps doing the negating and more so Floodgates being incredibly tough to break through or multiple boss monsters that Omni negate. There's many cards that out them sure but I won't lie when I say that argument is dumb when Maxx C fits in the same category and still should be banned. Sure if Maxx C was banned that's 9 cards that could make a difference in the game but there'll be times when you still won't have what's needed to push through.

    • @haydenz0
      @haydenz0 Год назад +19

      "Negate everything" isn't really a playstyle that's been meta for the past 2 years. Combo decks have been held in deck by board breakers for awhile now and decks are more grind focused these days. The problem with yugioh right now is locking players out of the game with floodgate effects, and this has been reflected in the meta.

    • @peepeevs
      @peepeevs Год назад +16

      The sentiment that the game is still about " negating everything your opponent does" is one I still hear frequently, but to be honest, I feel like the game has been moving away from negates for the past 2 years or so, even on Master Duel now. Most decks do still have one or two negates on their endboard (Baronne is still used in many decks for example), but most of the interaction comes in different forms nowadays.
      Personally I have felt that negates have also just been getting less good due to the amount of longer chains (and thus a lot of chain guarding happening), and also many decks being able to play through a few negates just fine. We've moved quite a bit past the "Adimancipator/Drytron board" type of play, and I actually believe the game is moving into a positive direction for the most part. Although tbf, it hasn't faded away entirely (I know Super heavy Samurai is about to bring that type of gameplay back in MD in a while from now), and the even the newer type of gameplay comes with its own issues.

    You know what's a crazy idea to massively boost the viability of rogue to casual decks? Implement the Duel Links system of universal limit/semi/3s. Oh you're a meta deck? You don't get to use powerful staples. You're a rogue deck with 1 card that's like Semi'd? Well you do lose out on the pool of universal semi staples, but you still have a lot of options elsewhere. That might deal with the 5% win rate of rogue decks if say meta decks weren't allowed to run hand traps that auto kill turn 1s for rogues

    The forte people pin on MTG is a rotating format, and while that's interesting if you're a deck-builder or you like to experiment with new things, the TRUE forte of MTG is a variety of supported formats. Yu-Gi-Oh! in general, but also Master Duel in particular, would benefit from AT LEAST 3 concurrent formats:
    >A No Extra Deck format with a vicious banlist, so if you just wanna monster beatdown, you can, but most likely it'll be Monarch/True Draco format (this is fine, but the important thing is to ease players into tribute mechanics and spell/trap removal with a format where that is relevant, and continuously supported).
    >A monster combo format, with Duel Links style Limited list (Limited 1, 2 and 3) to control for powerful cards, and where the banlist focuses on Dark Magician and Blue-Eyes as its model decks. Any other architype can be allowed, but limits and bans are handed out based on a decks performance against these two. No modern handtraps, this format is about learning monster combos and stun with a lower ceiling. This can be a true Casual mode in Master Duel, and Legend Anthology is an excellent start.
    >Competitive/Ranked. THE format for competitive players that want to beat down opponents with all available options. TCG banlist takes precedence, because whoever runs that has our best interest at heart way more than whoever manages the OCG banlist.
    All perpetually supported, with new releases, but their own banlists. A clear progression of play for new players, and players have the choice at staying anywhere along the way. Time Wizard formats should be considered mostly secondary, a lot of players that go to a store to play don't want to play a "dead" format, so keeping these 3 as ongoing is to try to keep as many players as possible engaged.

      Also, Konami, SPEED DUELS EXIST, they use regular YGO cards, you can make skill cards available online and release a stupid banlist, you table flippin' paint smellers.

    I think the game needs more modern archetypes with lower sealing. Like Sword Soul (Ignore Protos existence), it does stuff; it has tools to play through boards; there are options; but at the end, your opponent is just looking at two negates and an icarus attack, and I feel that's acceptable. I think people would refer to it as a mid-range deck, but I legit feel that in a healthy game, the power of all combo decks should be at that level. Not like Tear, where many people will claim that "Sulliek is the only negate," but the truth is that a deck like that out of nowhere creates interruptions and board presence that, while interactive, is just crazy overwhelming and exhausting.

This is why you see WOTC constantly putting out "we see X card is a problem, don't worry we're constantly monitoring its winrares and if we see a problem we will fix it" vs the complete radio silence of Konami

    Paul’s point about the way the Duelist Cup works and “they just want you to grind” resonated with me. I was enjoying my time in MD for a while, but after farming DC and playing tear after tear after tear I bounced off hard.
    It’s partially my fault because I’m not playing a super high-tier deck (Pendulum Magicians is my favorite deck, and it’s still capable of winning against good decks sometimes) but I’m far from a Timmy Blue-Eyes. None of the meta-relevant options really interest me, especially not enough to farm out enough gems and dust to craft a deck that’s gonna need like 8 URs.
    It also doesn’t help that, as a MD player primarily, I know what’s coming up isn’t gonna be fun either. I’m a pendulum player, so why would I come back to a game that I know just got Shangri-ira?

    I generally play MD and I definitely do feel like the person who just plays decks I enjoy and go into duel rooms with other people enjoying themselves. But I still can get a little annoyed at some deck lists. Just a few days ago I was in a duel room just waiting for someone to join when someone somewhat random seemed to join the duel room enter the table I was waiting at and I decided "why not?" I was playing Bystial Red Eyes for a bit of fun, and then I see them playing Runick Kashtira. So it was just a slow mill pain, as I kept up decently against their big Kash stuff for a bit, but the back row was helping them get stuff back and I was gradually running out of resources to use. I was left with just Red Eyes Slash equipped with Black Metal at the end. And when they Big Eye into Freeze Cursed to take Slash I just scooped.
    I recall this tale to tell that yes, I do agree with the fact of how a game ends can be to how you feel. During that match I could compare how it was with a python gradually constricting you, it was just a slow choke that I was desperately trying to escape. I was getting moments of air/fighting chance but then it would be eventually snuffed out.

It just was a slow burnout that left me annoyed.

    I really agree with Paul about teaching new players with older formats not working very well, sure they may be low power and easier for someone to understand but you're teaching them a whole different game, of course I'm exaggerating a bit but honestly not by much. Even if you are teaching them something like Edison if they like the game they're gonna like edison, not modern Yu-Gi-Oh, it's best to use a modern format that has been altered to be a little more low power than using a simplified format but that doesn't play like modern Yu-Gi-Oh.

    Josh's comment about "Why would they go out of their way" kind of extends further than I think he realizes.
    Why go out of their way to make the game more accessible when we have people playing?
    Why make the new user experience more palatable when we have a large existing player base?
    Why actually support the alternate formats or come up with new ones when people seemingly only play Advanced?
    Konami doesn't have to address any of these if they're even making money passively through the IP. Idk, maybe the investor notes will actually wake them up, but as far as I can tell Konami doesn't feel the need to try. "Why fix what's broken?"

For example, in TCG, verte anaconda is banned because it allowed almost any deck to run dragoon, and made certain decks like branded that rely on fusion often significantly stronger because of its effect. However, in masterduel they just said "fuck dragoon" and banned dragoon but left verte anaconda in... As a dark magician player it just feels disrespectful

    one of my issues with power creep is that if i want to play a deck that's older in modern (because no historical formats) I'm playing a deck that is fundamentally not built to contain the same number of generics as a meta deck now. The 9-15 slots of generics a deck would want just do not exist for decks that are super reliant on a 2-card combo. So if they come up against a meta deck, their chance of having something that makes that game playable is gone.

    Something unique about the master duel competitive experience that I feel makes ranked worse is the fact that people on ranked want to WIN, because doing so gives you gems to get stuff in the store without having to spend money. The solo mode gives you like 200 gems per gate and casual mode gives you nothing unless you complete missions. So what ever the best decks are people will play them not to be the "best" but to get the gems they want. What they didn't touch upon is a thing that I feel like gets no attention whatsoever in these types of discussions: Generic cards, specifically the ones that belong to an archetype.
    Ask yourself this: If Needlefiber required a Chrystron monster to summon, and it was only able to special summon a Chrystron tuner, would it be such an unforgivably bad designed card? Would it be stupid to a point where it dominated a format to such an extent where all you think about is how to stop that one specific card? Would it be so splashable that every deck plays it? No, there would have to be a trade-off; play a Chrystron-focused deck, with all the flaws that come with it, or play a different deck with a heavy Chrystron engine that is costly and is embedded into it and suffer all the many the Garnet penalties.
    I haven't played current Yu-Gi-Oh! since MR4, but I've been keeping half an eye on the game, and the splashable-archetype-specific-generic-cards syndrome is still as rampant as it has always been, and while power creep and general non-archetype specific bad card design, like Anti-Spell Fragrance get all the flack, an equally pressing issue of dumb power distribution still doesn't get the attention it deserves. JUST DON'T MAKE THE POWERFUL CARDS GENERIC. That way you have Blackwings that have Gofu, Gem-Knights that have Brilliant Fusion, Metalfoes that have Electrumite, and so on. If all of these only worked for their archetype instead of the game as a whole, this game would be a totally different game.
    All of this is making me imagine what Yu-Gi-Oh! could be, and then I come back to reality and see it for what it is. All around FeelsBadMan type of moment, ngl.
