I grew up in NE, KS, Iowa etc. You don't "get used to them" but you learn the safety rules, and stay alert when the weather gets bad. After a while, you can "feel it" when the weather turns potentially violent. And you don't live in a building without a basement.

Tornados can develop anywhere in the world, and especially in the United States. Even Maine has had EF3 tornados. It’s just some areas tend to have more or ones of higher intensity because of their location and climate. With the right conditions, you could get an EF5 Tornado is downtown Hartford, Connecticut. Springfield, Massachusetts had one of the deadliest tornados of all time that ended up being classified as an EF4.

Wow. That really solidifies the importance of following the advice to seek shelter underground! Retreating to a center room away from windows, standing in a doorway, lying in a bathtub, etc, aren’t going to cut it when the literal entire structure above ground gets ripped clean off😨

Notice how most of the Veritcal windows blew out like tissue paper, but the sloped windows sustained the wind speed, aerodynamics are real. High profile vehicles don't fare as well.
