Hey Debra - it’s totally okay to do that as long as it doesn’t take your hand out of position. Rolling my hand down works best for me, but I do use the pinky or even the thumb over the top in some situations. Thanks for checking in and if you’re interested in more lesson material, check out the practice worksheet pdfs associated w/ this series. All the best - Kevin (www.allforuke.com/lessons)
Thanks Kevin for Uke daily tutorial. I'm a senior player in instruments & I chose to learn Uke. I truly enjoy your lessons & 8've started from day 1. All the basics, ground work repetitive homeworks. All that makes to start believing in myself that I can do this. Thank you for your patience understanding & encouragement 🙏
Practicing every single day, even if it is only for about 10 minutes, has done more for me being able to smoothly change chords than anything else. When I first picked up the ukulele the week after Christmas, I thought that I would NEVER be able to learn chords, let alone change between them. But being consistent with daily practice has changed that (is changing that). I can see that the ukulele will never ever get boring - there is way too much to learn. And your calm and straight-forward tutorials are awesome! Thank you so much for them! (The muting tutorial is excellent - lots of practice coming my way...)
Muting with the fretting hand is a real challenge. But at the same time it makes me aware of how much / how little pressure is required to create a nice sound or an mute. Great training!
Thanks for great series Kevin. You are very encouraging. I know I'm making progress in my playing, when I get discouraged I recall that this time last year I hadn't even begun my UKE journey. Thanks to Mark for his suggestion re G chord muting.
For the G chord I find it's easiest to mute by simply moving my index finger over one string so it covers the G and the C strings. Great lesson. Especially naming the notes in the scale. Doing that with all the scales now. Thanks again.
Happy Trails from Canby, Oregon ~ Day 4: i really like the warmups with 1-2-3-4 with CmajScale... Love the muting practice to help focus on personal rhythm ~ thanks, Kevin! I'm having carpal tunnel surgery on fret hand next week & this is helping set a baseline for rehab...
A little bit of a challenge for me, brain-finger disconnect! I find myself using my pinky finger to mute, especially with the G chord. I approach my ukulele playing the same way I approach my yoga asana practice, the joy is in the journey. I’ll never be an expert at ukulele playing but, I sure love the process. It’s a wonderful thing to create music!
More to come! 3 new baritone series on my site :) If you're looking for more learning resources including practice tracks, song sheets and exercises, drop by my site and have a look. I think you'll dig it :) - Kevin | allforuke.com/memberships
Love all your tutorials! Struggling with the muting with the fretting hand, but trust I will be working on it. I would like to get some tips on memorizing songs, is it necessary to memorize them?
I love your tutorials and am so pleased that I can learn anything with strings after all these years. But I have never observed this “muting with the fret hand”, am quite uncoordinated with it, and not sure the value of learning it. Do you have a link of you doing a song that uses this technique that will inspire me to work on this?
Is there a best order to work through your tutorials thanks. Having tried lots of different peoples on the net I am finding yours by far the best Fiona
I didn't know muting with the fretting hand was a struggle for me... this lesson gave me a clear place to work on. Thanks for that. Would love a class on chucking. My sad chucking skills sometimes makes me want to chuck the Uke out the window. :) ...Not really, I just keep smiling like you say. Thanks for being such a great teacher. I wear my UKE IS LIFE shirt with pride!
Ron Willits thanks for bringing this up. I’m curious about muting vs. chucking. My chucks sound like a mute. I prefer chucking, so I guess I want to throw my mutes out the window! 😂
Good lesson! Muting on the frets!!!! For some reason I can not access the worksheets on day three and four. I am a subscriber and haven’t had difficulty on any other lessons. I have refreshed -multiple times without success. Any suggestions?
I had this problem in the beginning. What seems to work now is accessing AllForUke.com, Lessons, Play Ukulele Every Day, chose the Day, go to Returning Subscribers, Submit the e-mail, check the mailbox, and go back to AllForUke to download the lesson - this is done all in a row 😃
I find that when I hit a frustrating point I play something that is easier for me and I remember how hard that was and how nice it is to play it without challenge. Question? Do you have tips on playing alongside other instruments or uke players? Like strumming patterns, speed, beat?
I want to be able to play alongside other instruments, like in a band. Or even a band of ukulele players. I fear I don't sound right. Tips on picking the right timing, key or strum?
Oh - confidence, just like a Specto Patronum from Harry Potter ☺. Although I'm not an expert, when I get stuck playing something, I try to sing it and play along with the singing. With your videos, I try to play along as much as I can.
I have teeny tiny little fat hands and I can't reach my thumb around the top if I want the other fingers to sit on the strings too. It's one or the other. Is there another method I could try for chords like G?
sometimes using the pinky on the fret board to mute seems easiest. Is this not a good idea?

I can’t express my gratitude enough without a doubt you are an excellent teacher starting from basics. Thankyou. Yvonne Northern Ireland

This is a good one, I’ll do this. Thank you!!

That is the right approach Joan! Keep up that attitude and the sky is the limit
Here in Brazil it is encouraged to say the notes do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-si-do, instead, just like The Sound of Music film 😊
Actually Julie Andrew's sings doe ray me fa sew (a needle pulling thread and not si) la tea doe in The Sound of Music.
O yes 😍😍 now I am playing chord. 🎉🎉
Muting the strings is something I mastered on day 1 🙄 I must be gifted
Love your teaching style thank you! This is random, but you remind me of Rhino Clavin who does a Disney Vlog. You are both cuties :)
☺️
I like your courses for uke, I have a bariton uke and I hope you can give also more lessons for that, thank you.
I live in Holland .

Hey 👋 Can you specify a little more about playing with other players?

What are some of the best ukulele’s to get
I’m really looking for good ones
Do you ever use the heal of your thumb to mute
