I learned the Smith system in the late 1980s when I learned how to drive a semi. I retired a few years ago with no accidents and well over a million miles 48 states and Canada. 0:20 When I took my driving test to get my motor coach and motorcycle endorsements or for CDL renewals in different states, if they asked what I saw, I just gave them the Smith system "patter"... Mentioning the stale green light ahead or looking left right left at a fresh green intersection etc.
It made professional and personal driving a pleasure. I share your system with everybody I run into (in a manner of speaking of course)!
It's most useful when I ride with people who have trouble staying centered in their lane. I just tell them to try looking farther ahead instead of right at the front of their hood and check their mirrors more frequently to center themselves on the lane stripes and often the car centers itself right away and they are so impressed!!!
    Thanks!

I met Mr Smith in 1969 at the National Safety Council in Chicago. Then I joined the Army and had 3 tours, this was shortly after Viet Nam war. The government was very short of breathing bodies. So they were drafting convicted felons of non violent crimes and they would spit and scream , kurse down at me from the 3 Baracks. I didn’t feel safe. I was the battalion courier. I was housed in the attic of a castle by my self. A Nco was at the bottom of the stairs up to my area. A was given a jeep to run attends to personal and some other places. My husband would escort me to the mess hall as I loved the food. Wanted to get married but Germany(GDR) didn’t allow G.I.s to get married in their country so we drive to Zurich to sign the contract. Which I still have. Our second tour was the West Point WITH 3 years all over the east coast. Then back to northern Germany (GDR) for our 3rd tour which I like much more. The people were much nicer and less formal . They would not stare as much. And this was our 3rd tour when we drove and ate a McDonals in downtown Amsterdam which was 3 floors tall. We were aware that they learn English in school.
But lack the confidence and I spoke a little Duetsch. We drive pass The Hague. In the mean time we had moved off the installation and rented a small apartment with a bedroom and with kitchen and a bathroom with sink. The toilet was unheated in the hall for all to share. So we drove pass Garmish. We took 3 trips up into the Interlocken, Switzerland. One of the 3 trip we were eating breakfast when
