  • Hey guys, in this video I am teaching you how to find your foundation undertone using colour theory in makeup. Colour theory can be quite challenging for most people but learning it is the only way forward. I really hope that I have simplified some of the principles of colour theory and that you can apply it for foundation matching.

    I actually have the Terri Tomlinson color wheel but have never felt comfortable using it. I originally bought it because my sister has deep discoloration under her eyes (more like purple-brown), but she never feels color correctors look natural. Hopefully, now I can use this to help her. I also really like the idea of picking out complementary colors for eye/cheek/lip colors- that’s a really helpful tip.
    Thank you for this video, you’ve really broken down how to use this for those of us with ‘brown’ skin tones. I’ll probably be watching this a number of times just to absorb all the information! And I would definitely be interested in a part two of demonstrations! 😊

It's also so exciting to see an Indian person teaching makeup bc it's definitely important to watch tutorials from people with similar skin to yourself and it's rare for me to see someone w skin like mine that I feel is so unique to people from the Indian subcontinent. It might sound weird but I feel like I'm learning makeup from the older sister I never had.

You have a very lovely smile, I binge-watched your videos to learn more :) I thought I was an NC42 however seems like I am an NC37 in the MAC studio fix fluid foundation (I have dry skin so have been testing out the new skin radiance serum foundation in the UK). I am still not sure though which shade is a right match for me. I prefer to wear very natural makeup that doesn't make it obvious that I am wearing makeup. Any chance you are able to provide guidance on what may suit me in the MAC mineralize skinfinish natural? Could you also recommend a powder foundation for dry skin that you can wear on its own? Thank you

    Currently obsessed with this whole undertone thing and its relation to color theory! This was SO helpful! Thank you! What is most valuable to me is seeing theory APPLIED the way you matched your own skin. I would love to see a video where you analyzed people’s undertones the way you did yours. I got a Tomlinson color wheel and it changed my game. Terri sees all red undertones as WARM, though, and I’m now freshly confused, as I thought pink undertones in fair skin read cool. I know all color temperature is relative, but now I’m wondering if I should be reading cool pink undertones as blue. Just when I think I’m getting a grip on this, I’m not! lol Anyway, super helpful vid! Many thanks!

    • @Beautylashes19
      @Beautylashes19  3 года назад

      Thanks so much Judith, glad you are having fun with colour theory. I would generally consider pink as warm since it has mostly red as it's base. But cosmetic brands make it confusing by naming their pink based foundations cool! The only time I would consider pink leaning cool is if it has a bit of purple in it.
      Ah, I would love to have different people on my channel to analyze their undertone but I live in a foreign country and don't know many people here (also considering the current Covid situation, I don't think it's a possibility).

    hi dear ! I just loved this tutorial so much. it has been quite detailed and informative. thanks a lot !
    i just have few queries if you could guide me with them
    a. how to practice identifying the different undertones and matching foundation for particular person or many people. except using the flesh tone color wheel as it would look strange to use colour wheel on client's face. though the idea of the flesh tone colour wheel is their as our basics.
    b. while buying the foundations and base for our vanity how to determine various foundations with different undertones?
    thanks !

    • @Beautylashes19
      @Beautylashes19  3 года назад +1

      thanks so much for your kind words.. :)
      a. I would say practise with swatching foundations/concealers on the flesh tone colour wheel.. it helps studying undertones in products and seeing tones we didn't see before. The more you practise, the better you will get at identifying the right undertone for clients.
      b. Unfortunately, this also comes with practise.. I check descriptions on brand websites to see how a shade is described and compare it with swatches available online. Sometimes they are spot on, many a times they can be a bit off.

    Hi I also have the book and the wheel, as a trained Colour Consultant I wanted to get them but I find the wheel was difficult to find my skintone and my clients, however when I layed her actual foundation on the wheel it read yellow green. I need to use it some more to see if I find more skin tone replication in it.

    • @Beautylashes19
      @Beautylashes19  4 года назад

      That's interesting.. I found swatching on top of a clear film work better for me instead of on the wheel directly (unless it's a thick formula). When swatching on the wheel, it takes on a bit of the undertone of the wheel itself (in my mind).

    Ive found a lotta trouble matching my skin tone. None of the usual techniques used to work for me. Ive seen myself yellow, but lately notice maybe I have some olive undertones. But! The color that makes my features pop out the most is warm purple! And people always say to me that I look radiant when im wearing something thats warm violet. So then ive just realize, FINALLY, That my skintone must be yellow undertone. Plus, doing some tests, browns have always suit me well, my hair wich is dark brown has some red-orange reflection, and orange red suits my lips. Am I right? Hahahaa would like to know ur thoughts about that! Thank u so much by the way!😊💚🙏🏻

    • @Beautylashes19
      @Beautylashes19  4 года назад +1

      Yesss! Warm purple looks brilliant on olive to yellow-green skin tones (same as me 😁). It's because it falls opposite on the colour wheel and therefore highlights the undertone the best.
      Browns are "neutrals" so will work with all skin tones. Just need to use the right depth and tone.

    • @Beautylashes19
      @Beautylashes19  4 года назад

      For lipstick and eyeshadows, I would recommend trying a warm purple one.. they look gorgeous on olive and yellow-green undertones. I consider olive to be a neutral tone meaning we can pretty much wear most colours 😊 but warm purple looks especially pretty on us. I hope this helps 😃

    This is helpful as someone with light brown skin. Just wondering how I would cover spots of hyperpigmentation from melasma. Will I need to cover each spot individually? Or just cover the whole face then add another natural skin tone colour on top of it?

    • @Beautylashes19
      @Beautylashes19  2 года назад +1

      Glad it's been helpful 😊 For melasma, I would typically do color correcting first over the area with melasma and then use a concealer that matches your skin tone over that area. Set that well and then you could apply your foundation all over, just apply gently in a tapping motion over the Melasma area.

      I generally use the cinema secrets foundation for my freelance work and I don't use sunscreen for photoshoots. But I did test it on the two sunscreens I have currently - La Roche Posay Anthelios 50+ (good for combo to oily skin) and Beautypie ultralight UVA/UVB spf 25 (better for dry to normal skin) and the foundation does not ball up with either of them. I hope this helps 😊

      Sure, I was matched to 290 too in Fenty and although it matches my neck when stretched, it doesn't when I look straight ahead as my double chin casts a shadow on my neck 😬 Anyway, the best colour match so far is Dior backstage face and body in 4WO.. something a bit deeper is flower beauty light illusion in Tawny.

    I’m fair and I have olive undertones. So very yellow. And let me tell you it’s a pain to find fair foundation with olive or yellow undertones because apparently you can’t be fair with those tones😑 Fact of the matter is that you can be any combination of shade and undertone. Some combinations are very common. Especially where you’re from. For example I’m Portuguese so olive undertones is common. But that doesn’t mean every Portuguese has an olive undertone. If you’re stuck between two colors, you’re best bet is to go what’s common cause odds are that’ll look best

      Haha, thank you. No worries 😁 it was mostly to the outer ring since that's meant for medium skin tone. But, not everyone is going to be an exact match to it so I also look at the inner rings to check if the skin tone is in between shades (if that makes sense).

    What if u have acidic skin where the foundation tends to darken after some time? Then finding the perfect match could be useless?

    • @Beautylashes19
      @Beautylashes19  4 года назад

      Healthy skin does have an acidic pH. So, I think you are referring to that. Foundation darkens mostly due to a process called oxidation which is based on the ingredients of the foundation, your natural skin oils and air. This process is quite similar to an apple or potato slice going dark on oxidation.
      If you take care of your skin and find a perfect match, it should not oxidize unless you change your skincare and it affects your skin condition.

      Purple veins suggest cool undertone in the wrist area and the green suggests warm undertone in your arm.. I generally don't rely too much on colour of veins to figure out the undertone as it can be varying on different parts of the arm/body.. I would suggest getting the colour wheel I mentioned in this video to help figure out your undertone or maybe send me your picture through Instagram (@Beautylashes19).. I can try to help..
