  • This was SO fierce. 💃
Ellen Pompeo from Grey's Anatomy giving it straight to the crew of Porter magazine at their own roundtable shoot. 😂
This round table included Gina Rodriguez, Gabrielle Union and Emma Roberts, and they spoke about the pay gap, gender equality and diversity among other subjects. It's such a must-watch 🙏
On a personal note, I showed this to a established stylist that has consistently worked at Porter magazine and his reaction was: Yep. That Porter office is very... white. 😬

Actually, there have been studies at major universities on this topic. Like the ones on how if a person’s name on a resume looked ethnic opposed to a person with a white looking name, the resume with the white looking names got calls for interviews more than the ones with ethnic names. Researchers would create identical resumes but just change the names on them.
And over and over again, the same results happened, resumes with white looking names keep getting calls for interviews more than ones with ethnic names. Goggle it, it’s a real thing.

And she says this because she is in an interracial relationship and has the mixed race children and sees the reality of how under represented ethnicities cultures and colors are represented. I'm white and was raised in a white middle class family in Ohio going to an all girl Catholic high school. I was an outspoken feminist in the '80s and '90s and my dad thought that I was a lesbian and kicked me out of the house. I didn't encounter diversity until I left home and moved to New York. Then I married a black man and became part of HIS family. When your family is underrepresented and your kids have to deal with bullshit stereotypes You wake up real quick. And then you advocate. @@lorihall-israel your 100% CORRECT! I don't like using the word race but I do in these posts because it's what people are comfortable with, societally. I don't like the word race because it was invented by slaveholders to demean and diminish the intelligence and value of black people in order to justify white people owning them. I wish that we would use terms like ethnicity and culture because like you, I believe we are all one race, the human race. We all bleed red, we all feel the same emotions, we all have family, we all love. The color of our skin, where we come from, our spirituality, those are the things that make us unique. And THOSE are the things that need to be celebrated and embraced and understood by everyone in order for our differences not to be defined as divisive. As the human race we should bond together and support each other just like these women are supporting each other. I think if women spent less time trying to tear each other down so that we feel better about ourselves, based on unattainable levels of perfection that the media and society put out there, we could literally rule the world. In all reality, we do it already, but we do it from the background and we don't get any credit or respect for it.

I think it’s funny that everyone who missed the point and is mad about what she said are also ironically determined to remind everyone that people shouldn’t be hired solely based on their skin color. How can y’all not see, due to the context, that y’all are implying POC aren’t as qualified? This is the American film industry and what Ellen said was absolutely valid. People shouldn’t just get hired because they’re white which is what has been happening since the dawn of filmmaking, and she’s trying to advocate against that. I think a lot of people need to sit and why they’re so upset. Your sentiments on inclusion are as old as the film industry itself and are still just as bad faith. She literally agrees with the intellectual diversity point y’all keep insisting she missed.
People who leave comments like y’all are why Hollywood has these problems in the first place. Ex: Movies like the Blindside and the lies it told, in order to comfort white/ model minority audiences. You guys are the white audiences that producers think won’t relate. She literally said to include people that were just as qualified & y’all turned it into a way to discriminate against white people. 🙃

    • @potatokat8453
      @potatokat8453 10 месяцев назад +28

I also like to add that when people who think like y’all are in positions of power and are told that they had to have more diverse teams, that’s when it becomes “forced diversity”. We’ve all seen “inclusive” things that don’t necessarily make sense. And we can tell when things are made to target minority audiences just for the sake of them being minorities. (I’m looking at you McDonald’s commercials ) It’s a job for people at the end of the day and when people who don’t think a lack of diversity is an issue and or are just racist, make “inclusive” decisions it doesn’t look right. Again refer to movies like the Blindside or the annual over the top plucky BLM and pride merchandise. (Which has admittedly been getting less cringe, because the teams are getting more diverse, but still needs a lot of work.) When people are actually willing to understand how race can affect opportunity, especially in the entertainment industry, it leads to more substantial and affective hiring. Which I’m sure everyone in the comments is advocating for.

This is HUGE on so many levels.
I am a POC and grew up in a very small town, where demographic diversity was almost nonexistent. It just happened to be because of the location and access, etc that not many immigrants ended up there, but my parents did.
Then, about a decade ago, I moved into the big city 700 km away and the only way I know how to phrase it is that it was “culture shock of my own culture” - my first PROPER/REAL experience of people like me along with so many other colors and minorities and not how the media portrayed us wasn’t until I was 18 years old. And it took me that decade to try to become accustomed to that somehow. To undo everything that had been programmed into me in my developing years by my personal environment, by the people I saw in magazines and film, and and the fact that absolutely none of them looked or acted, or even found interests the same as mine.
Just two years ago, ended up working on the set of a TV series that had a very diverse cast, even if behind-the-scenes still needed to catch up to that. But I was fortunate enough to not only be able to have a private conversation with one of the leads as well as show creator but to thank them because small examples like this show were all I would have needed as a little girl to have a little more confidence growing up so thank God a little girl now would have it - I spent the entirety of my first two decades believing that I would never be good enough for the world. This world didn’t want me because of the color of my skin. And I’m fighting that less now, but the fight still exists.
Things like this - what Ellen has said - needs to be said, needs to be pointed out, needs to be changed. Representation needs to happen on screen, behind-the-scenes, and in the many contexts that exist outside of the film industry

Don't be obtuse. You can't be this naive. She was talking about the crew. Those jobs are filled with an internship/apprenticeship type of tradition. So guess who gets them? The producer's kids' friends from a private school. Or the director's golf partner's nephew...etc. It's an insider gig and minorities are shut out from even being given an opportunity. She is saying that she, as a white person with some power has the responsibility to open the doors to allow POC to walk thru them instead of being another white person closing the door behind them. You know good and well POC can do the job just as well as the hipster nepo baby white guys we'd see if they turned the cameras around.

They're not defined by their colors, you should view them as a person first and hire them based on their qualifications. The crew needs to be qualified though. Skin color has nothing to do with job qualification. I’m not gonna hire you just because you’re of a certain color. It’s who can do the job. Not who has the color. Diversity is useless if those who get hired can’t do the job well.

My only question is: is she gonna give up the spots and roles she has for people of color or does she think that’s OTHER peoples spot to give up? Honestly it’s hypocritical when I hear white people who have MADE IT talk about how there needs to be more diversity

    • @polkawportugalii905

Why would she give up role ? Like, she is the one being casted. Also she played along people from different backgrounds in Greys. It is not like they casted only Caucasians 🙈
It is getting to an absurd where historical characters that were white are played by black people. I am pretty sure there would be a GIANT scandal if an actor playing M. Luther King was white….
Honestly if something is based on history or on a book that has description of a person, they should just stick with it.

Casting more people of color and casting based off of performance and ability does not mean giving up rolls. It means that they cast the best person for the roll. I don't think they should cast people of color JUST for diversity, but she is RIGHT it is a problem. People, especially woman, are not fairly cast. They ate cast and judged off how they look.

Interesting comment from this star - her world is very different to mine - she is strong, forthright and stands strong by her convictions. I grew up in an area of just Caucasian people and although taught that everyone is equal I was intimidated by coloured people. As I grew older and mixed more by travelling I see the world as a segregated place which continues to evolve and grow - there is great unrest caused by religion and colour - I wonder if one day we can all live in peace ☮️ that is my wish 😎🇦🇺

See. This is where I have a problem. I understand In some instances there is a racial issue but at the end of the day if someone is good at the job, give them the job. Their skin color should have NO DECIDING FACTOR on whether the job is there’s. THATS racism. Example: (white guy john who’s been to college for 4 years, has been working in the field for 6 years since) “I see your extensive background in this field, I see you have a masters in blah blah blah, you have wonderful reviews from former bosses but, rob over here, he’s indian. Although he only has 1 year of college and has never worked in the field. we are choosing him over you because well, he’s Indian.” But thanks! Imagine being that Indian man, knowing you’re only chosen based on what you look like.

@@NumberOneJournalyes but Ellen's saying the same thing others are saying and it's happening EVERYWHERE so the point and example still stands. It's about fighting for equality not picking people just because of their skin color. Another example? In my area of Texas, colored children in the foster system receive more college benefits and other benefits more than white children simply because they're children of color. That's not equality, that's racism. So what do you actually want? Do you want equality, or do you want racism to play out in your favor?
