Whoops! Forgot to post this on publishing the vid...
I came to realise at the end of editing this video that this ENTIRE film is one big demonstration of how when Jesse doesn’t have Walter in his life holding him back or messing things up for him, he gets out clean. He knows what he wants, does it, and it works out for him. It just shows that Jesse’s characterization during Breaking Bad exists solely because of Walter’s influence, and is the cherry on the cake of everything I argue when it comes to his character and how he isn’t truly responsible for where the show takes him. Walter is.
I do honestly believe this idea is mirrored and intended to be construed by the writing, which is why they wrote an ending for Jesse that allows him his freedom rather than death or incarceration.
Small note…I think the reason main bad guy in this one initiates the shoot out is because he sees where Jesse has put the gun. We’re told when Walter puts it in the waistband of the front of his trousers why he shouldn’t do that, and big bad here clocks that and underestimates Jesse. He goes in looking like that to keep their guard down, armed as he still is from inside his pocket, and it works beautifully. Another moment of execution from him that displays how clever he is.
P.S. sorry about the sound lowering in the last 10 mins or so. I recorded this in two parts (same sitting) because my camera only records 3 hours of footage, and before I realized it had done that in the second half it was too late to fix it in the edit ♥

I do think you are correct that they do a lot of mirroring and paralleling. It's no spoiler to say this continues into BCS and I love that about it.

I didn't look at Walt saying your really lucky u know that, quite as negatively. I looked at it more pity worthy. I think the general point is that Walt realizes and feels he has wasted his life not reaching his full potential, which is ofc his own fault but still. He's not obviously saying that this is jesse's highest worth or potential, given he was trying to give him advice to get his life on a good track. I think the lens he sees himself in Jesse is a mix of positive and negative, he sees cooking meth as special because it allows him to follow through with his highest potential in science, but he also sees jesse as younger and having potential to chase something bigger like walt wished he had done when he was younger.
I gotta disagree that jesse isn't responsible, we gotta remember that even before jesse brought him in deeper. That jesse is a adult and was cooking meth. Also jesse personally went to walts house to draw him back into the business and jesse was working with gus even when walt wasn't around.
I could be wrong, but another thing about Jessie is when Gale is talking to Gus about Watler's percent of cook, Gale states that he can do 96%, and is proud of that number. Later on, when Jessie cooks for the Cartel, I believe his cook was 96.2%, just going to show that he really was great at it, even compared to someone of Gale's educational background.
No disrespect to my man Pink, but you think Gale could’ve rounded out for Gus?
@@christianaguiare544 likely wouldn’t have, as being a high level chemist requires precision, and while Gus may not be a chemist, I’m sure Gale would’ve informed Gus what the percentage was down to the nearest hundredth.

Just want to offer up a different take on the vacuum fixer... you claim that all he does is "drive a van" but if you think a bit about what it takes to create an identity for someone that's a suspect in a nationwide manhunt, plus the money/resources it takes to pull that off - then you start to understand why he wanted compensation for the first time Jesse stiffed him. That was his own money that he initially invests before payment since he never sees you until it's already time to assume your new identity. Then, yes - the humongous risk of driving said suspect across the country, making sure to never get pulled over for anything, that the vehicle is in perfect maintained shape with no lights out, etc. There's a ton of overhead for someone in that line of work to do it discreetly and to him, Jesse's just another punk that had a change of heart and skipped the bill. The fact that he did technically cover for Jesse and subsequently decided to honor his side of the deal after the fact was actually a HUGE favor to him and is the catalyst that allows him to ultimately escape. Also RIP to the actor that plays the fixer.
Walter absolutely killed Jane. Jane and Jesse were both sleeping on their sides. Jane was conscious about this during the first time Jesse tried heroine. She tells him to lay “On your side, in case you throw up.”. But when Walter shakes Jesse while he’s sleeping, it knocks Jane over onto her back and then that’s when it happens.
Did Walter inject Jane with meth? I don’t believe he did. Therefore, she is responsible for her own death.

Your rant about Jesse's parent's is soo right. The most they ever do is suggest he might need to go to the NA meetings at the church. If they'd have ever gone to any church themselves they might have heard about this little story called the PRODIGAL SON! You know, where a son has squandered his parent's money, gotten into trouble and was thought dead. And the MORAL of the story is that the father wholeheartedly accepts his son. No matter how many times he screwed up, no matter how many times he lied or relapsed or didn't listen. Jesse's not perfect, far from it, but he does have an inate desire to be good. He tried to lean into his bad guy role because he was told that was what he was, but when it comes down to it he is the one to stop himself from selling at the meetings-he is the one who couldn't even say the word murderer hours before being cohersed into becoming one. I just really don't think that any parents who give up on their kids, who literally unhouse their own son (something that would be bad for anyone but is especially bad for addicts.) If they really wanted to help him, they could. They have the resources. But no it has to be WALT who checks him in to rehab and only after things went SO BADLY that his girlfriend died of an overdose right nest to him. Sorry for the wall of text, I have way more thoughts on this subject. It's so nuanced, I feel like part of it boils down to his parents equating his addiction with him being a failure or a bad person which is just not the case.
NOT TO MENTION, that they have at this point seen on the news the conditions he'd been enslaved in and they STILL urge him to turn himself in (wow that's some serious faith in the criminal justice system🙄) That is the last thing someone in his position needs, Especially because we know the nazis have guys IN THE PRISONS. He would not be safe and his mental and physical health would deteriorate more than they already did in his captivity.

I was very satisfied with El Camino. I'm not sure why it sometimes gets a bad rep. It was exactly what it should have been, an epilogue to give us closure on Jesse. It didn't necessarily feel like a "movie". More like a double episode bonus of BB. But for me, it's not a negative.
I think its mostly because of Todd's actor gaining weight or Walt's bald cap. I think they are mildly distracting tbh.

The scene with Walt take place after they cooked in the desert for 4 days. They almost died of thirst that's why Jesse tell Walt to hydrate. Jesse also said let's take a hotel room, separeted rooms.

Well, let's be honest - Jesse did OTHER bad things besides selling to recovering addicts at those meetings. Shooting Gale leaps immediately to mind. But, yeah, in the grand scheme of things in the Breaking Bad-iverse, Jesse's a relative innocent.
And he had plenty of opportunities to get out of the game. After Peekaboo, after Combo died, after Jane died, after he went to rehab, after he got beat up by Hank, when he called vaccuum guy for the first time.
Late in the party but I just finished that last Breaking Bad reaction of you, and I wish I could upvote it more than once, as I agree with so many of your takes, if not all, and that ride with you was really enjoyable. I usually only watch Breaking Bad reactions but I might make an exception for your chanel and watch your other reactions too.
About Jane, I red that the initial script was to have Walt inject more heroin into Jane's arm to purposefully make her overdose, but this was judged as too dark and "too soon" in Walt's arc, so his role was more subtle, but still more active role than just "watching" I agree.
And if you think of Andrea death, Jane death, Broth passage into ICU, Combo, Walt really has a hand in so many of Jesse's relatives getting killed or heavily harmed. In terms of relative being killed, Walt "only" lost Hank (not to diminish his loss), and he reacts by giving Jesse to be tortured and executed even if it was Walt himself who called the killers as his allied, while Jesse was actually on Hank's side, and furthermore it was the afternath of Jesse finding out about the poisoning of his own relative, but even in that context and while having so many blood of Jesse’s relatives on his hands already Walt reacted with the maximum cruelty to him. That's why I had really hard time feeling sorry for Walt in the cabin after that, while watching Jesse being tortured and enslaved in parallel. I mean, like so many of us, I was never dedinvested from Walt's character who's a still great character no matter what. But yes, he's definitely luckier than Jesse and embraced his ruthless part more and more (while Jesse felt more and more destroyed by that).
I also loved that Walt's final Hell (a cabin in a quiet place) was Jesse’s dream (he says in the final scene that he enjoys the quiet of Alaske and I feel it mirrors Walt's desolation to New Hampshire quietness). And meanwhile Jesse’s nightmare (the lab in the nazi compound) was Walt's dream, the place where he died, a smile on the face.
I thought the first part with Badger and Skinny Pete was super compelling, and showed us a new side of Pete. And Jesse's PTSD was heartbreaking. And then...the rest was pretty rote. Jesse's PTSD magically went away as soon as he left Pete and Badger's house, and then they had to invent a new villain because everyone who wronged Jesse was already dead. The Todd/Jesse flashback stuff was cool, though. Todd was as amazingly creepy as usual, though his weight gain was a bit distracting.
it was also ptsd that made him give up his gun again. how many panic attacks do they have to shove into the movie for viewers to get the point? he's already been dealing with ptsd ever since killing gale, he has already been permanently altered by its impact. returning to a more innocent time with the beetle and memories of jane and standing up to neil are all crucial moments of triumphing over his ptsd. that's jesse actively confronting his trauma, not trauma magically going away. he'll probably have a part of him broken for the rest of his life, but the movie has to end at some point and the writers trust the viewers enough not to spoonfeed this.
@@MossyQualia No, he gave up his gun because he believed they were cops and a bunch were outside and he couldn't shoot his way out. He never actively confronted his trauma. It just magically went away one-third of the way into the movie, as I said.

It’s a matter of personal taste. If you like something more slower moving and contemplative, you’ll prefer BCS. If you want high octane insanity, you’ll prefer BB.
A year late to your watch, but I'm so glad you pointed out that Jesse does NOT have a choice in helping Walt from episode one - Walt blackmails him into participating by threatening to identify him. Jesse makes choices as the show progresses, some of them bad, but that initial choice is NOT his. Love your commentary and excited to get into BCS!

El Camino is brilliant. The problem was how Netflix chose to market it. They made it seem like it was going to be this big blockbuster BREAKING BAD MOVIE!!! When of course it isn’t supposed to be that.

I never realized it before, maybe I missed that line in previous watchthroughs, but Walt is 100% the one who put Andrea on Jack's radar.
I think some people complained about this because they expected a Breaking Bad Movie to be BIGGER, rather than more of a coda to what already happened.
Jessie in this film used things he learned from all of his mentors
for example the standoff was Mike
Its a combination of all
He won cause he had a clever trick like walt in his pocket
And also the coolnes and calmness with the handgun while in a gunfight
he just stay calm even when he is shocked
I've got this dilemma: I suspect that El Camino works as a neo-western movie on its own merits, with Jesse as the mysterious fugitive whose backstory is given just enough to make sense of his agenda during the movie itself. But I don't know if I can in good conscious ask anyone to watch El Camino blind without watching Breaking Bad first, to see if I'm right.
Its impossible to understand who jesse was and who he is now.
I think you need to atleast watch BB atleast 2 times to fully understand el camino and jesse.
Hi Tyler, I found you from Buffy reactions and decided to watch your Br Ba after just doing my 2nd rewatch.
It's interesting hearing that your opinion on Walt had shifted after your rewatch. I think you are now at the place I was upon first watching it. So much compassion and empathy for Jesse, and then there's Walt, mostly responsible for all of Jesse's hardships. But now im at a place where I have more compassion and was open to hearing your perspectives that first time through.
I do see walt as a pretty accurate portrayal of someone who suffers from narcissism (and I dont say that lighty) and todd to me does come across as antisocial (i.e. sociopathic). But I love that the show still humanizes these conditions that, as a society, I dont think we do. Todd is actually such a good example of this. So many times we see psychopaths on tv that are portrayed as these villians that know better and dont care, often sadistic. But Todd actually comes across as somewhat neurodivergent (which I dont say to offend anyone, as a neurodivergent myself). You can just kind of tell there is something that was lacking in his upbringing that makes me kind of naive to his behavior, how he comes across and it would honestly be so sad if it werent for the fact he's caused so much harm, but you can see that hes still scrambling for approval. It's an interesting juxtaposition from Hiesenberg who is ego driven and selfishess but not completely void of empathy; rather, he has impaired empathy he chooses to compartmentalize for his own self-interest. Personally, I enjoy exploring the nuances of these characters when so many people might just write off these behaviors as unhuman monsters without considering the layers underneath.
As for Jesse's parents; I pretty much agree with everything you've said but also feel kind of bad because I think they are just enacting the social conditioning of that time. His parents are behaving in a way that all experts a d sources at that time were telling people how to behave and that abandoneding you're loved one was somehow the right thing in order to hit rock bottom. I'm glad that as society, we're starting to move away from that perspective in some ways. We can't just treat addiction as a one size fits all approach. Like you said, Jesse was worse off not getting that proper nuturance.

Being an American in the Midwest I’d argue it’s been that way the past 10 years of Parent’s saying hey maybe College/University isn’t right for you. At least that’s how I was brought up. But both of my parents found Jobs without college and moved up with little to no high school degree let alone a college or university one. So maybe I am an outlier. But I felt like my friends growing up were the same in our area so that could be an area thing too.

Clearly? I don't know, I feel like that's a bit of a leap. And I don't actually say they don't try. I state in the video they did. I think that manifested itself in 'go to church', 'pray it away', and the distinction I make is that I don't think any of their 'help' is actually actionable considering what evidence I've seen of them in the show. Further, I think their help actively harmed him.
@@jackinabox926 yep. We also have the direct contrast of Jane's dad and his conduct with her and her addiction. This is MEANT to show what a parent should do.
Jane's dad walks her to meetings, sits with her, gives her a place of her own and responsibilities to keep her busy. Even when it gets so bad we see he threatens to call the cops, he doesn't. Once more he's gentle, offers to actually HELP. It's night and day. Often the show does this I feel, where it actually shows you directly a good vs. bad example of something.
I agree. They had to protect their other son, and Jesse was an adult by then and made his own choices.

About midway through Breaking Bad when considering who I wanted to be the last one standing, I wanted either: 1) Skyler takes over the business.... or 2) Jesse drives off into the sunset... And I was disappointed we didn't really get closure with Jesse, so this was cool..And then they threw BCS at us... And a lot more uncertainty... In the best possible way.

IMO, all of BB, BCS, and El Camino is about morality, and the colour changes of their clothes in BB is when you see it, Vince gave them all colours, Walter starts in green (Envy, naive and greedy) then goes to pink back to green and then to red and black as 'Heisenberg', (The Heieisenberg 'uncertainty' principle) Skyler and Walt Jr., are mostly blue (purity), Hank is orange (determined) and Marie was the only one allowed to choose her colour and chose purple for royalty, she is on a pedestal, takes what she wants and believes she knows better than the doctors, even the meth is blue for purity, and Jesse is all over the place!!
I like how you pointed out that his dad left the water dripping because everything done in breaking bad and this movie is done on purpose like Jesse playing with the bug like he did in season 2 of breaking bad that's why they focused on the faucet dripping also Jesse turning it off showed he cares and has respect to not leave his parents faucet dripping but he could have left his finger prints there
Mike could’ve been that father figure to Jesse that ur on about. But he met him and started to like him when he is too far in. Mike thought he couldn’t save him even tho he wanted to. You will understand what I mean when you watch better call Saul
I absolutely believe Mike could have been. I omit him from my 'people who nurtured Jesse' because he didn't really have time, and rather than nurture specifically, I'd say he more protected Jesse, or at least acted as guidance in the short time they had together. He definitely cared for Jesse.

Bryan and Aaron Paul are great friends until this days! They have a brand of Mezcal and they trip all the usa promoting the drink. Days ago they met with the twins who plays the kid of Peekaboo! Aaron recognize them instantly.
“You made your own luck”.. I love Jesse and no one deserves what Todd did, but he’s kinda right. He chose to be involved in the drug trade, there’s rarely a happy ending. He’s lucky to be alive and not in prison.
Not just that, but it was HIS choice to stay. He had a chance to go with the vacuum cleaner guy and get out of the whole situation for good, and he blew it.
I want to see more of Jesse's new life i want them to make another movie or series about Jesse's new identity and he needs to not be alone anymore he needs a good job and family maybe have Brock go down the wrong path and Jesse some how finds out and he remembers that Andrea said she would die before letting that hapoen to her son and Jesse feels like he needs to go save him with his new look and new identity no one would know it's him but he would have to stay out of sight while he is searching dor Brock to get him out of the drug life style just something i thought up that would keep it going lol
Eh, too much infantilising of Jesse. I agree about the parents being not great parents, I agree about Walt manipulating him to stick around. But he did have several outs throughout the show. Him not being in an emotional state to get out of it isn't an excuse for an adult to not be held responsible for his actions. That excuse can be used for Walter as well. He wasn't in an emotional state to receive any charity. See how easy it is?
I love El Camino. Bringing back the whole original crew. Amazing. It's a Once In A Lifetime Opportunity.

Jesse has went through a lot throughout the show, but it's only because he has reacted to a lot emotionally and impulsively without thinking. Sure Walt picked up the slack a few times but enough is enough, Jesse is not a child.

@@TylerAlexander Jesse tries to kill the two men that killed the boy, Walt saves him, damaging his relationship with Gus for good. He now wants to kill him, Gus tries to turn Jesse against Walt so he can get rid of him (but why does he wanna do that anyways? Because he saved Jesse by killing the two men) so much so that he threatened Walt's family.
All that tension that spread throughout Seasons 4 and 5, where did it start? Jesse trying to kill the two men who would've killed him if Walt hadn't stepped in.
The only reason Jesse is even in that position is because Walter brings that upon their operation. He's greedy and wants to increase distribution when we are shown several times that if he'd only been patient (he had 2 years after all, as we saw) he would've been able to move the meth carefully without involving Tuco or Gus. Walt saves him after getting him into that position, after getting him INTO that situation let's not forget. He rats out Jesse to Gus in the first place and that brings about the two men killing the boy in the first place. If you trace all these things back it's Walt's inlatience, mis management, and ego ruling the show. Not Jesse.
All the tension throughout 4 and 5 comes from Walt not being able to control his impulses and dismissing Jesse and his feelings as unimportant, which he does from the very start of the show all the way to the end of it. Walter is one of if not the most impulsive, emotionally driven character in the show.
@@TylerAlexander Walter only made 3 emotional impulsive decisions in this entire show:
1- killing mike
2- yelling at the cop till he got pepper sprayed
3- attempting to burn the money then changing his mind and throwing it in the pool.
That’s it. Every other decision he did was a survival mechanism. Jesse is much more likeable than Walt and a much better person to chill with, but the truth is, he’s kind of a big baby and he’s not innocent either he wanted to sling meth in rehab. Yes Walt did worse things but atleast they were to stave off greater danger.
1,800 bucks is not a small amount of money. Your making it seem like it was pocket change that he was denying Jesse his disappearing services.
What's your point? 1800 isn't a small amount but considering the sum already paid it IS a small amount to be short of considering the situation.
You're forgetting the context and the fact that Jesse is a VERY wanted man at that point and has extremely limited options of how to MAKE that money. That's the point. My reaction isn't predicated on the amount, my reaction is entirely down to it being such a small amount of money IN CONTEXT to how short he was of the full sum considering how much he'd already paid combined with how it is next to impossible at that stage to conceptually think of how he would make any money at all and not get caught while doing it. With that context in mind it's shitty not to throw him a bone and say 'it's only 1800, let's do this'.
I feel like you've either misinterpreted my reaction here or just don't appreciate the context.
@TylerAlexander It's easy to forget that not everyone has at one point been in that type of lifestyle. But more than 10 years ago I had alot of interactions with criminals of all kinds. Unless you were dealing with millions of dollars, 1800 bucks is alot of money regardless if it's small in context to bigger amount. And someone else's problems aren't my problems. Like the guy says, "if your planning on pulling on heartstrings..." criminals rarely give a fuck about any hardships someone has. You have to be cold. So my apologies for not immediately recognizing that not everyone will understand that mindset.
I felt this movie was a great ending for Jesse, but just had some issues with some of the details. I think Jesse could have killed Todd in the desert because the Nazis were away for the weekend. It made me feel like Jesse had to go through too much just because the Breaking Bad story was locked in that he never got out. But that is a quibble. I am very glad Jesse got to get away and we know about it.
If Jesse had killed Todd, Jack would’ve known what happened when he came back. Then he would’ve killed Brock. Jesse knew that

Jesse shooting Gale was after a series of events that involved extremely heavy handed manipulation and abuse from Walter. My point here is that him selling drugs to those at the meetings is Jesse and Jesse's alone. There're no two ways about that. He's at fault, he's to blame, he did a bad thing and it's his. You'd be hard-pressed to say the same for most other bad events that involve Jesse in the show.
