Excellent build, design and craftsmanship! That's a plane to be proud of and enjoy using in the shop! It needs its own special pedestal on the shop wall when not using it so you can just sit and look at it sometimes!
Such beautiful work! You should be proud. I think this would be a great project for someone who really wants to create their own tool. However, if you just want a plane, it would cost you a lot less to just buy one. For example, I just dropped $500 on a Veritas plane. It would have cost me more than triple that in time to build one. Having said that: I'd still make one just for the sheer joy of producing a beautiful tool with my own hands.
I love watching you make these beautiful planes and other tools. I wish they were within my budget. The one I looked up was four months income for me, so not in my budget unless I hit the lottery. I know one of my first purchases if I ever do win though. And will feel like it is worth every penny, too. Nicest tools I've ever seen.
Thomas, they should be within your budget! They are made from a bit of steel which costs very little, and a bit of wood. All the machines do is make it easier and quicker.....a thick bit of plate glass as a flat surface and sheets of abrasive will get you there, it will just take weeks instead of hours. Also, it does not have to look good to work, just flat and sharp.
absolutely amazing work just one word to the wise you should really start using push sticks when using your saws. I know you're great at working with your tools but it only takes one slip.. I know a lot of great Woodworkers that had accidents including myself.. awsome work!!
Where do you get the hardware? What angle do you use for the iron? Do you put the sharpened angle up or down? i've watch most of your videos, you do nice work.
wow look at that!🖒🖒 beautifully crafted. did u take the hardware from another plane to use? -the plane u used @3:23was very nice as well. thanks for sharing that
sir, did you make the frog, iron and chip breaker or did that come off of a different plane. if you did make them could you make video about it. outstanding work
Very nice work! I was wondering about the planing iron and the lever cap, do you make them or do you buy them? If you buy them, can you tell me from where?
Beautiful work! This and many of your other pieces are simply superb. Question: Have you had any problems with wood expansion due to seasonal temperature/humidity changes being bonded to a steel sole? I would guess that these materials might behave and "move" differently, but I may be over thinking it.
Once you learn how to "read" the grain of the wood, and it is well dried (stabilized), it can be used, cut on the proper grain orientation, without risk of the piece tearing itself apart do to movement.
Hey,you make wonderful Tools from Wood and you are a great inspiration,Thank you .Where do you by your steel and your wood, do you have a good link for us ? Tom
Hey Tom! Thank you so much. I get my steel from ebay, this is the seller stockcarsteel; and the wood I get from my local hardware stores. The steel item is Cold Rolled Steel Flat Bar 1018,
Thanks for your Answer,i Wil have a look.Iam in Germany, there you can't buy so many tropic or hardwood.Always as complitly furniture.Sorry for my bad english :)
I live in the US, Mid Atlantic region. I have watched Young Je's videos for a long time. I would like to know where you purchase the plane iron adjusters so I can build my own planes. Hope to here from you.
We recently lumbered a 36" maple, a 36" white ash, and a 32" pecan. After drying, we tried planing with a Rigid (Home Depot) 13" planer with 2 HSS knives ruclips.net/user/postUgkxIzvvTi3_Qc8JnVdYYRJCvuoDC4QjTzeL . This job was clearly too much for that machine. The pecan was particularly difficult, due to heavy mineral deposits, and a sharp pair of HSS knives would be consumed by a mere 3 boards. We were also having lots of problems from chip bruising, due to poor dust collection. The shavings came off like straw and jammed in the 4" hose.We bought the DW735 simply to be able to run carbide blades, which worked brilliantly for the pecan. However, we found it to be a much, MUCH nicer machine. It was far more rigid than the "Rigid" planer, and far more accurate as well. But what I liked most about it was the dust feed. This machine has its own blower, which shreds the "straw" like shavings as they come off the cutting head and helps boost the shavings into the dust collection system. No more clogs! It's also nicely sealed so that the internals stay quite clean. This is just a well tempered machine that's a delight to use. It literally cut the labor in half. Just another example of getting what you pay for.
Hi Could you please tell me if I could buy a couple of your planes :) And also how I can contact you with a private message about them. Thankyou for sharing you truly inspirational skills .
I think one of the "infill plane" videos recently had a link to buy from him. That one was $2400.00. Out of my price range or it would have been sold on the spot. I don't recall if any other tools were listed, broke my heart to see that such a beautiful piece was so far out of my poor reach. That plane would have been about four months of my fixed "disability" income. I can hope and pray to hit the lottery, then I will own at least one of his functional works of art.
Man that is an awesome plane. I really like the detail at the heel, leaving the steel sole a little bit proud of the body. Awesome job, good video!

Men were making steel planes using hacksaws and hammers 150 years ago. And steel is cheap.
Beautiful!

Question: Have you had any problems with wood expansion due to seasonal temperature/humidity changes being bonded to a steel sole? I would guess that these materials might behave and "move" differently, but I may be over thinking it.
If you look closely at the wood that comes in contact with the steel, there is almost no contraction or expansion of the tree
Young Je thanks for your response
Once you learn how to "read" the grain of the wood, and it is well dried (stabilized), it can be used, cut on the proper grain orientation, without risk of the piece tearing itself apart do to movement.
I would have bought this plane!

Can you do the same with hand tools only?
Now I know why the pre-recession Arizona co. planes were so expensive!!
What keeps the steel in place?
그저 매번 넋놓고 감탄합니다.
감사합니다~
Does this blade sell? What steel is that?
Great build! How did you attach the metal sole to the wood? I want to try to make one of these!
