  • I'm not passionate about art. I'm passionate about the outdoors and art is how I've found I can express that. I believe that art is a personal journey that must remain true to ourselves. As I work on my newest painting I titled, "Reflections of Past," I give my thoughts on this and my process of creating.

It's artists like you that keep self-taught artists like me going. I tend to compare my art of the outdoors with other artists' pieces and I sometimes get overwhelmed or intimidated, so your wise words of pursuing individuality and letting passion drive you really hit home for me today and have changed my perspective on my craft. Thanks for being awesome.

That’s true same here I tried all the time to paint as good as other pro artist but I guess just being me is enough and painting what I want to paint and how i want to paint it is what I should be doing. Although getting into the artsy mood is always hard to start a new piece... maybe tomorrow..

I have to say Chuck that I think this is one of my most favorite videos not only because of your beautiful work but because you're able to put into words things that we as artists all feel. You have a wonderful gift of being able to express your feelings which I envy. You're so right in that as an artist , criticism is a fine line. A lot of the time it can crush a budding artist . I can so relate to most of the things you mentioned in this video and I truly appreciate listening to you and how you explain your process of dealing with it. So INSPIRING !! Thank you for this one Chuck

The very meaning of art is to express yourself; when someone tries to tell you how to do that, they are squashing your creativity. Every artist's story is different, and there is always some way that every person will express themselves. I think many people don't understand that art can be anything, from music to painting to even playing a video game. Thank you so much for being a part of my story, and helping inspire me to learn so much about painting.

From my own experience I have to show some of my paintings to people professional painters and they told me your paintings are no good. I ask them why? They told me they look to real like a picture. Then another artist told me don’t follow what they say you paint the way you like, not the way they told you. That is who you are and there is people who will like your paintings because of your style. so I appreciate your comments about your paintings. Personally I think you are one of the best. Please keep on showing how you do it, it will benefit many of us. Thank you again for your great work. 😊

This is so beautiful! I can't get enough of the outside, I want to be in the middle of forests looking up into the sky thru the tall trees, I imagine it on canvas and how I'd paint it. I can't get enough of snow covered ground, old fences, flowers, sunsets and sunflower fields....I want to paint them all.

To me, it doesn’t matter if someone thinks you’re doing it wrong. Look at the end result. That speaks for itself. I wouldn’t dare look at what you just painted and tell you you’re doing it wrong. It’s beautiful. Doesn’t matter how you did it.

Chuck! Thank you SO much for this!!! Now I know why I relate to you so easily. Mother says I was drawing before I was writing, as a child - I've always done it. I actually won a blue ribbon in the first grade for a drawing of a deer...you should see that horrid thing🤪🤣🤣 The subjects I tend to gravitate to the most are more "formal" in nature, but the parallels are exact. The appreciation for criticism is the same for me, too. The, "You're doing it wrong.", and, "You're not good enough.", are non-existent concepts. The bottom line is that the only person you have to please is YOURSELF. If what you do pleases other people, then fantastic!!! You, Chuck, seriously please multitudes!!! Your "unique voice" is definitely heard - loud and clear!!!
    Oh yeah...GORGEOUS painting!!!!!

As a self-taught artist, who DID briefly go to school for Art, Design and Media(that did NOT include painting classes strangely enough)...I use art to cope with anxiety and depression. Hey Chuck,
Thank you for putting this out here. This video really got me a little teary eyed.
I've been struggling with this for a long time. Especially back in my time at art school.
I found my voice back last year and it's been going so much better since.
I recognized myself a lot in what you said about all the influences from outside. All the people who don't really believe in you or don't think you're doing it ''right''.
It's so important to stay true to yourself. It really is the only way to keep painting.
It's why I never miss a video, E-mail or post from you. Because you remind me of that every time you share your work.
So thanks for the message you send out! A while ago, I noticed you started following me over on Instagram and I was so honoured to have you there on my little profile!
Especially now that I've watched this video.
    Thank you!!
    Best wishes,
    Lidewij

What a great video with wonderful advice to any artist of any kind. I'm basically a self taught musician who could relate so much to what you said about not losing your own identity and what makes you unique. I have had those over the years who have been encouragers who have pushed me forward in my gifting, and then there have been those who tend to discourage because you don't fit a certain "mold" and they want you to conform to certain "norms". Thanks for being someone who encourages. You are a wise teacher!

Diamond words from the heart of an artist Hello, I am a girl, my name is Shimo, from the Middle East, exactly from Iraqi Kurdistan I was suffering from poverty, but I loved drawing since my childhood. I tried to start a painting project, but I did not have the money to buy colors and brushes. I borrowed money from my friend and bought drawing supplies. I watched some videos of artists on RUclips and tried to imitate them, including you, Viktor Yukvich and Peter Drainsen, but all my attempts failed and decided Stop but one night I was crying and imagined a picture expressing my sadness I grabbed the mattress and after an hour it was my first painting about sadness and loneliness my mother looked at the painting and she couldn't believe that I painted it even I myself couldn't believe I painted it and so I found my art inside and learned from my heart

6:58 some great words of wisdom...if anything....anyone who desires to become a painter...listen carefully to this message...alone with ALL the other timelapse videos here of Chuck....I've watched him grow throughout the years...and it's with his drive.. desire ..passion...motivation ...experimenting...getting out in nature..all factors in "his" learning curve that brought him to where he is now...
He's so correct, one cannot learn by just copying other artists...asking for "what colors you mixed" ...and so on...he investigates....goes out into nature..."looks at a tree" and so forth..it's an never ending learning curve...but once you've gotten to that point...it's a beautiful thing to be able to put it on canvas ..to mix paint and with brushstrokes...bring a piece of nature to life on canvas...
A time, a place that will forever be seen in that moment...
That's what is so intriguing when "looking" at an artists work like Chuck's...
Like looking at Edgar Payne's pieces...knowing that he hiked, climbed mountains...slept out in the elements and captured that specific image...a mountain, trees that were there and what it looked like so many years ago...it comes from within the artist that "loves" nature...not art...mixing the colors...and with his brushstrokes...along with what he's seen, what he experienced...such as the sunset ..the tree...a few clouds...all elements in nature a time...a place...forever captured through the eyes of the painter...

This is a great video, you inspired me so much... much more than your painting process, is your words in between... I too met with teachers seem to enjoy putting students down.... so many 50+ years past still hurts. During the prior I run a successful commercial studio, I found the same negative mentality of some of my competitions...
Hence, the best self-encouragement I came out for me to live by:
listen to our inner self, walk on our own path, do what we love & love what we do. USE the best of the Talents God bethrown on us. Afterall the ability to paint was the Gift from God, and to paint to the BEST/highest skills during our lifetime will be our artist's duty. Afterall artists were born with these gifts, paint the best to give away most... our eyes easily enjoy the beauties around us more than most people, in this aspect always a reward.
Love & Respect our artists Gift! Since the gift was blessed upon from God, let's do our best to hone our skills to spear the gifts outwards.

7:15 great words right there...listening to other feedback can really change a person on so many levels and topics...
One can be taught composition, but one cannot be taught how YOU see that tree to be rendered...or mixing color...it must come within..and many want to know what colors...how was that color mixed...one can't ever duplicate a color mix of another...it must be learned...it must be felt...it must be seen within that painter...same as handwriting...it's the brushstrokes...and the color mixing that makes that artists work stand out and unique AND how they see ...
Yes...don't allow anyone's feedback or criticism infect your brain...so important...

Good message.... I certainly see your passion for the outdoors in your work.. and truly enjoy watching you create... I've learned a lot from watching and am thankful for you sharing with us.... I'm always seeking to learn and get better but I'm with you on the critics... I'll listen and if its resonates with me as something useful I am super grateful...if I don't agree or see it a different way I remain super thankful for the advice but don't always follow... keep on doing it your way Chuck... we like your individual voice!

Although you can't always capture the awesomeness of nature, like Chuck has proven, you can capture the feeling that nature gives you. Art is a wonderful, beautiful way to convey nature and how it affects you, glad you've picked it up!

The artwork speaks louder than any words could as an advocate for it. As such I can't disagree with your own understanding on the validity of your art.
As far a critique goes... I'd love to see the work of those who critique you; they must be frickin otherworldly!!
