Today we're going to look at the Opteka X-grip, camera stabilizing grip. And what the Opteka X-grip grip does is allow you to attach any camera with a ¼-20 thread. You can also attach devices like the iPhone or the Go-Pro camera with the appropriate adapter. You can attach the camera in several different orientations, thanks to the movable screw and the slotted base. You can also attach a shoe-mounted accessory such as a rode videomic or a LED camera light. And the shoe mount can be expanded with an adapter and a mounting bar. It has this foam handle that makes it rather comfy to get a good grip on the handle. The Opteka X-grip is about 7.5 inches deep and has a clearance of about 4.75 inches. It does fit small DSLRs, like a T4i, most small camcorders, iphones and GoPros very easily. However, before you do buy the Opteka X-grip, make sure to check the dimensions of your camera.
And once the Opteka X-grip is attached, it enhances the grip on your camera. And this is extremely important for cameras that weren't initially designed for run and gun video shooting, like DSLRs or GoPros. DSLRs have very poor video ergonomics and this definitely improves the grip. The X-grip also allows you take some very low to the ground footage like you can see here. However, it definitely isn't a replacement for a steadycam or glidecam or any other camera stabilizer. And while the footage is slightly more stable than free-hand shooting, the stabilization it offers isn't substantial. Its important to think of it as a better grip rather than a camera stabilizer. Its also great to improve your camera grip when panning the camera, as you can see in this footage here.
Two things we didn't like about the Opteka X-grip. While there is a threaded insert on the bottom, you'll find it very difficult to attach your rig directly to a tripod. And the second thing is a rather unpleasant chemical smell from the handle. Lots of reviews online complain about this and if strong adhesive-like smells bother you, you want to stay away from this. The smell was strongest when first taken out of the box, but it doesn't seem to fade very much over time.
And our overall thoughts about the Opteka X-Grip: Its an inexpensive tool that improves the grip on your camera and despite a few flaws, it does what its designed to do. I use this for all my videos. I have a lavalier mic attached to the front ring. I also have a mini external battery pack attached for more weight, as well as a phone mount to use as an external monitor since I film with a GoPro. Very handy tool.

when i attatched my Panasonic handycam it kept on moving slightly while being screwed on but i improvised it with a rubber lining underneath and it seems to be more steady ..one more thing that is missing but can be added is extra coldshoes for lamps and microphones since there is only one on top

Ironically they're using the exact Canon I am using with this moon grip--the cinematic videos we've constructed for our crew used this moon grip and it has helped considerably with the handling.

thanks for this vídeo, it helped me a lot! I was curious about how this could be considered a stabilizer lol doesn't seem to work too well, and definitely can't be used for films. it might be useful for people that shake a lot when holding a dslr however.

Video quality immediately improved when using the X-grip. I also purchased a shoe mount so I can use mic and lighting. The X-grip is a good value.

I've heard that the farther back you position the camera on the x grip the less shake you get in your video.

How do u attach an iPhone to this?
Carver Lindstrom buy a cell phone mount that has either a hot shoe mount or a 1/4 20 pin (tripod pin) so you can secure it to the top of the handle.
