My old guitar player back in the early 90s got one when they first come out til this day still one of the best processors iv ever heard and seen he got the processor first got the pedal board few months later and man it was on when he got the board
90's (and 80's) gear is making a comeback. Just look at online auctions! Prices are getting crazy. I still have a Rocktron Prophesy, first version but with the Vers. 2 processing chip, No hardware difference between the 2nd version.( I had extensive conversations with a tech there years ago.) Just the presets are changed . Vers 1 and 2 presets - they ALL need tweaking. It was 'da BOMB when run in front of a 50w Marshall Plexi reissue and 2-12 cab. Naturally, I sold that amp . The Prophesy is a bitch to program. Too many options. Preparing to use it through a Scarlet 2i2 > Mac > Logic X and see what it can do. Like the monster above (which sounds fantastic) it has balanced stereo xlr's out.
Changing the tubes is the key for the overdrives to come alive! Put a pair of Telefunken's in mine and it smoke's. Direct recording sounds like a full blown stack!
Still have mine.Went to Mesa rack gear a while back...but pump this through a good power amp (2:90 here) and it still holds its own. Bit of gear that I will never part with. I have some hot JJ tubes and the extra ppc in it and its just beast mode.
The very best guitar processor Digitech ever made. These are increasing in value now. Sure, the current modelers are much more capable, but these Digitech units had a very distinctive sound.
I agree - this is definitely one of the best. I ONLY say that because the Rocktron Prophesy II sounds tighter, punchier and a bit ballsier for Hard Rock and Metal, but that doesn't take away from the obvious greatness of the 2101 :)
1970borntorun You're doing something wrong then. The 2101 has 4 12ax7 gainstages and runs at full voltage,it is NOT a starved plate design. The Rocktron is a digital preamp and arguably sounds worse than the Voodu Valve and definitely worse than the Piranha, which also uses high voltage 12ax7s.I have 2 2101s,a 2120,3 GFX1s,a Valve FX,a Voodu Valve, and a Pro Gap,but sold my Prophesy. In other words I've had them all side by side since the late 1990s,and know them all well.
Slicklickz is correct - the 12AX7 tubes in the 2101 operate at a plate voltage of 285 volts, and I verified that. The maximum operation voltage for a 12AX7 tube is 320 volts, so you can see that the 2101 ran the tubes very hot. They required replacement once per year in regular use, and as a result many units out there likely have tubes that need replacing. This situation probability gives some people a false impression of the 2101’s capability as a preamp. The tube section of the preamp has two gain stages - the first controls the input gain on the first tube, and the second controls the output gain of the second tube. Both gain stages are run in series, and that makes them a cascading gain stage. The Digitech 2112/2120 also had their tubes running at 285 volts. Biggest mistake Digitech made on those units was the removal of the active speaker emulation, which is hardware-based, similar to a classic Sans Amp. The 2112/2120 only had digital speaker cabinet emulations, and was not very good. The digital cabinet options would also be added to the 2101 with later firmware.
My brother gave me his GSP 2101 Studio Tube Preamp/Processor when he left home to go into the Marine Corps; started reading the 200-page programming manual but soon quit ’cause it was wayyy over my head lol… hope to dust it off and learn to program it one day
Wish they still made this. Thankfully they 'kind of' still do, as its core tones (tube saturation, clean tube, speaker compensation) are incorporated as options in the 1101 rack unit as well as the RP floor processors. I actually defer to these instead of all of the amp/cab modeling my RP500 has. I prefer the studio quality/Def Leppard-y sound of the speaker compensation rather than modeling a cab. I also use that live with the direct out to the sound engineer, which really cleans up the mix for my band as we have six members. Don't know why ppl hate on Digitech so much. I think it might be because the stock presets in the RP stuff aren't great, & people that don't know how to program their own just give up on these units.
Exactly. I had a Helix and the Eleven Rack ....sound wise my Digetech RP-1, RP-12 and DigiTech 2112 SGS , had more natural tube and compression than the newer toys.
They hated on a lot of stuff and it went down in price. Like the Marshall mg100hdfx and metal zone. I think people realize how good a lot of this stuff is now though. Because yea people didn’t know what they were doing basically. Or playing
The Van halen sound is an instant dead on. I have a Digitech 2112 SGS and I am looking for a good used 2101 to go along with the 2112 . The 2112 and 2101 were the best units that digitech ever!!! came out with . Nothing since then till today almost 2013 can eve come close to the amount of options you had on these units. I enjoyed this with an upmost respect.
I love this one too.. i have exactly the same, artrist version. Last version to come out. One minus with it is that there is some latency when using many effects simultaneously. The best multieffects unit out there, besides axe-fx and Eleven.
Haha I have this same model, I picked it up a my local guitar shop, it was just siting in a dark corner and got it for $100 :) love the sounds on it :)
By the Way I bought my 2112 SGS back in 1997 it is still used everyday and only the internal cell battery was changed that is it. 1997 to 2013 long ass run and will keep going...
Hi, awesome video, really like your distortion sound around the 1:07 mark. Is the distortion coming from the digitech or from your amp/pedal? Any chance you can share your settings ? Cheers Joe
Nice vid, great playing. I thought all the sounds were good with the exception of the really high gain like Enter Sandman. This would be a good rack for me.
What pre-amp tubes would you recommend? I have a GSP 2101 and I'm looking at finally connecting it to my - FINALLY capable - large combo tube amp which can accommodate a preamp effects head like this one. My old Fender SS combo from the '90s couldn't accommodate it but my tube amp can!!!! Finally I can use my DigiTech GSP. Assuming the tubes inside are all factory stock, what do you recommend as the absolutely BEST replacements for improving tone and output?
@bbwbb2 You know exactly what I'm talking about. I wish Digitech made a newer model of this and the 2120 with tubes, but the industry trend has moved back to the stomp boxes.
I have one i will post videos and sounds eventually, everyone gripes about the preamp section and distortion sounds \ look i get it! I had this thing for years changed tubes all that ran it direct for years made many recordings with it. The distorted sounds are crap if ran direct in.. BUT@ if you like me get a kick ass all tube amp < I got the Bogner / line 6 spider 2 12 , so run the the distorted sound out of the 2101 now !!!!!! into the amp and just bypass the amp effects by plugging into the back of amp where is says power amp in, now your talking one of the coolest distortion sounds ive ever heard. blows away the internal all tube distortions built in to the line 6/ bogner. So i feed from the 2101 just a little volume into all tube amp which ever brand and crank the output of the amp. Its a fantastic sound. If you find one and have a badass tube amp get it, you wont regret it. Im recently going to purchase the tc electronics g force effects system to compare. peace
@Swmorgan77 I've never tried the 1101. To be honest I've liked most of the distortions and overdrives from that company. Trust me, I'm picky with distortion units (I have Boss and Bad Cat units also). If the 2101 only had distortion and no other effect I still might of paid the $1000 brand new price tag. I'd be interested in hearing how 1101 produces "Saturated tube" without the tubes. I'm no snob I'm open to anything. My favorite distortion on the 2101 happens to be a solid state one.
Hi buddy. you may not even have the GSP 2101 anymore, but you may remember a few things. it's about whammy, my whammy doesn't sound so soft like yours here in this video, mine looks like it's dotted like it's individual notes, do you understand what I mean? Is there any setting I'm not doing right?
Great sound and playing!! I'm looking to replace my 12AX7A penta preamp tubes in my Gsp 2101 digitech, any recommendations in some replacements, thanks
@Doomzdayxx They both 2101 and the 2120 have the best overdrives and distortions you can buy period. 2120 has a slightly better wah pedal sound and is also easier to change algorithms (pedal orders). 2120 has more powerful software and memory capacity. Both sound great. I pair both with Mesa Boogie 20/20's and a SimulClass 2:90 power amp. Can't beat them. My best sound out of the 2120 is with the Saturated Tube. My best sound with the 2101 is with one of the solid state distortions.
@GlenHyden Damn!!!!!!!! that sucks for me because I just moved to Florida and had my GSP 2101 shipped to my new house from New Jersey and When I got it, I turned it on and it says...B.F.A.
@DTM1864 I've picked up the 1101 which is a modeling preamp but has the "saturated tube" setting available which is supposed to be based on the 2101. Does anyone have a take on how accurate or similar that preamp setting is on the 1101?

I have one I got around 1995 but It No more works right but I Am more Into using Danelectro and Behringer separate pedals now but I Am still looking for Something that can match It's overdrive the closes Is a Marshall JMC 2000 but the Danelectro D-1 with a ART tube preamp In front Sounds good but does Not have enough gain.
My old guitar player back in the early 90s got one when they first come out til this day still one of the best processors iv ever heard and seen he got the processor first got the pedal board few months later and man it was on when he got the board

Fractal Audio. Way more options, and way better sounds.
Love my 2101 Artist !!!!

Im lookin for the owners manual of this GSP 2101 i didnt find it, somebody knows where i can find it?
Nice Audioslave effect, pretty much nailed the sound.
good ! I already have that sound with my marshall vs100 , but that digitech is awesome
I have this one with the foot pedal, still this best pedal for metal and most other styles that I've ever heard. If you can find one , buy it !
I still have this unit with the orginal foot pedal! Great fucking unit!
I miss mine...I remember the 2112 came out...and it wasnt the same
Hey man the Eruption solo was great!!
Cheers Joe
Mam taki sam procesor
Mam pytanie jak nagrywałeś materiał? Czy z ustawieniem mono? korzystałeś z symulacji głośnika?
The RP-20 rocks to, just make sure the Digitech pedal/processor you choose has tubes in it !
Think i'm goin back to my 2101a,the 1101 has capabilities but lacks soul the 2101a does.why didn't combine them?
crawling int he dark played at 00:52 sounded exactly like the song, GREAT JOB
Nice chops. The demo really showcased the ability of the unit. Heard many sounds i am dying to get..Im hunting one of these used,,kudos..
Nice vid, great playing. I thought all the sounds were good with the exception of the really high gain like Enter Sandman. This would be a good rack for me.
Hoobastank was a nice surprise!)
Dam good DEMO man ... nice tones ... nice playing
That panning effect (1:16 to 1:50) was making me dizzy. Fucking awesome!!
I love when people take the time to record in stereo.
@DTM1864 Thatnks DTM. I ended up with a 2101 and love it. That damn thing is complicated for a simple guy like me though lol
Man I miss mine. I still have it but never fixed the internal power supply
Great demo.
Changing the preamp tubes to something decent, makes a world of difference (and using the parametric EQ to fine tune the tone...)
What pre-amp tubes would you recommend? omg i love that "amp"
The beste and cheapest ever
Nice tone for def leppard
Thanks for the guitar comments. see my new demo
lol , you have exactly the rack i'm craving for , sir ! (still wondering if i go rocktron or digitech ... )
What do you think of it ? :D
@bbwbb2 You know exactly what I'm talking about. I wish Digitech made a newer model of this and the 2120 with tubes, but the industry trend has moved back to the stomp boxes.
incredible demo man
@methodinsane And are you recording direct or miking a Cab? Some info about your setup would be great :)
Great tone and tasty playing! These are better through large tube power amplifiers and a few 4x12"s ~~
eruption sounded just like the album
I have one i will post videos and sounds eventually, everyone gripes about the preamp section and distortion sounds \ look i get it! Are you micing a cab here or is this direct into the computer? Is the cab sim on or off or are you using a different cabinet simulator?
@Swmorgan77 I've never tried the 1101. To be honest I've liked most of the distortions and overdrives from that company. Looking at buying one of these. Is it hard to program? Great video👍👍
Its very involved. They are worth it though
Great sound and playing!! I'm looking to replace my 12AX7A penta preamp tubes in my Gsp 2101 digitech, any recommendations in some replacements, thanks

You still around?
@@Doomzdayxx Yes I am.
Good
What's that second to last heavy sound? WANT IT 🤘🤘🤘
@bbwbb2 I still have mine and pair it with a Mesa Boogie 20/20 power amp. Nothing sounds better.
3:14 what's that riff song called ? Anyone know ?
I have a 2101 artist with bad chips, do you know where I can find them? i replaced it with a studio 2101 but hate to getrid of the artist.
If you can't find one of these go for the GSP 1101 and update the firmware and you'll be amazed.
I,Have one love it. It's greaT.Peace & Love.
which interface did you use to record the sound?
Angel Montes de Oca
All the samples are recorded direct with no post processing. 100% 2101...no plugins, IR's or anything else.
@GlenHyden Damn!!!!!!!! that sucks for me because I just moved to Florida and had my GSP 2101 shipped to my new house from New Jersey and When I got it, I turned it on and it says...B.F.A.
Where kind settings for these distortion they sound awesome!i got v 3.
What song is that at 1:17 ? It's driving me nuts I know it and I can't remember.

None of the patches download at Glen's site. Does anyone else have them ?

Is this pretty much the precursor to the Artist 2120?

JJ Electronic
Would a marshall 8008 work good with this 2101 what would you recommend
stupid questions goes after ????
robert scott - I think ANY decent power amp will work. I use a Rocktron Velocity 100 with mine...mostly because I found it on Craigslist for CHEAP!!
Damnit...I can't believe I fell for that. Wasn't even paying attention to the amp in the video.
Hey, guys! What is the song played at the end of this video?
Skogen Kriger cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson
Super!!!!! :D
what patch or song its at 3:05
@DTM1864 I've picked up the 1101 which is a modeling preamp but has the "saturated tube" setting available which is supposed to be based on the 2101. Does anyone have a take on how accurate or similar that preamp setting is on the 1101?
Well the 1101 doesn't have tubes...so cant be that accurate
How did you get the 316 is it pure 2101?
doublefatstrat
Yep! The preset may still available online. If is isn't I have the patch as well as all the others demoed in this vid.
Dan Perry i need this presets : 316 and def leppard. i dont find them on line. Can you help me?
whats the setting for the def leppard patch?
doublefatstrat - setting 12. Didn't you just watch the video?? Every song works with 12!!
fucken awesome!!!!!!!!
@themodernguitarist the 1101s suck compared to the old tube models.
whats the name of the first track?!!
316 by van Halen
Can anyone, who has played with both, give me their opinion on GSP 2101 vs GSP 2112/20???
DEF LEPPARD :D 80s
@myskull54
An Axe FX will sound a whole lot better. Its more up to date, has better software and hardware, and has more effort into making it.
But, it will cost 5x more than a GSP2101. You can also probably find a used GSP1101 for the price if you're lucky.
Hi some body called?
@jaddis729 CLIFFS OF DOVER
@sssteve72 Audioslave - Like A Stone
This unit has only mono input, this sucks if you want connect this to polyphonic synth
ps. who the hell gave thumbs down for this video? lol
