I could understand a father willing to take a risk for his daughter but dammit Bjorn folded like a chair when he was trying to explain why they left so suddenly and just made it worse for their own people pleasing personalities to handle. i don't doubt people exist out there that are just like this, plenty of suckers out there born every minute lol

The fact that Bjorn and Louise are stoned is quite telling of how they're perceived by their killers. They were stoned for their misdeeds which to me is thier lack of protective instincts of their daughter. I mean what parents take their child to a home of strangers? The whole "stay with us" is basically a test where they prove if a family is passive enough to being abuse. They are predators, and predators have a pretty keen eye to detect the weaknesses they can exploit. If the family stand their ground, they probably can leave without harm, but if a family remains silent to the awkwardness is when they act and kill. Also they probably just act when they get bored of their new "child", that is more like a pet, maybe thats why they were progressively more abusive with Abel towards the end.

    • @RecluseBootsy
      @RecluseBootsy Год назад +255

Abel was actively putting himself at risk to test the killer's boundaries and subtley warn the family. Closest thing to a hero in this film. It's what got him killed prematurely. When he showed Bjorn his tongue was cut out, it was the most blatant thing he could show them directly. When he chose to block the slide, he *knew* he was going to get in trouble but it was a passive attempt to get his abductors to drop their facade. When he was dancing, they might as well have had a gun pointed at his head. Kid knew he was literally dancing to save his life. The argument heard before he was drowned was probably the kidnapper's last attempt at getting the kid in line and when he refused to play along or stop crying, Patrick decided to get a new "pet."

      - Found out shady things were going on during the elections? Don't demand better electoral processes, just vote differently next time.
      - Billions of dollars of taxpayer money being sent to Ukraine without once checking in with the voters? Don't get angry or else you're a Nazi and you don't want to get canceled, do you?
      - Turned out the 'experts' were all lying through their teeth during the pandemic? Don't ask why the media lied to you, just keep getting jabbed because your employer demands it.

That and deaths of victims in abusive relationships are often caused when victims decide to get up and leave or try to stand up to them.
There's definitely a point to be made about how being permissive in a bad relationship is never gonna do good for you or your loved ones but going straight into "Why don't you just leave? Seems like you condone it then" territory is a miss.

A friend of mine made the score for this movie, and I followed on the sideline as it was released, knowing super little about what happened in it. Once watching it, I LOVED it, but I was honestly a little worried that it might be too Danish, becuase it is - it plays on some core values in Danish society that is hard to explain to others, like 'you don't complain, and ruin the good mood', and one of the reasons that we were called 'the happiest country in the world' is because we have a rock solid trust in the person next to us. An average Danish person would never think that someone was out to harm them, maybe rob their money, maybe beat them (if it's extreme). and that is why the sentence at the end 'because you let me' hits so hard for us who grew up in that culture. But I am SO, SO happy to see that it IS actually understood, maybe without the hard hitting deep rooted cultural unease, but understood, and felt - outside of Denmark. Thank you for covering this, I know alot of work and purpose went into making this movie. (and when people say, they had many chances to escape, that is what makes it Danish, cause they don't think anything really bad will happen, not really - we are simply not exposed or used to violence or ill intent, so to think others mean you harm, is simply both rude, and unthinkable).

an example is how the mother is a vegetarian (like myself) and when presented with meat - she choses to eat it, because to do otherwise would be rude to your host. Even if we know how little she wants to... or the infamous 'return for the teddy' that says a lot about how Danish society sees what being good parents are like. And combine that with the fact that they actually think that nothing bad will really happen. All in all it's a critical love letter to Danish mentality, wrapped in a story of violence and deep mental trauma. People here they vomited in the cinema and walked out, hating the movie - and that is because it hits home, hard. we all see ourselves in that couple. and even if we all sit there and think, dude buy her a different teddy at a gas station, we also know that chances are, we too would return for it, because we didn't want to upset the child.. again it's hard to explain. it's even more Scandinavian than Midsommar, what can I say?

Something you didn't mention in the beginning when talking about why they let so much stuff happen without doing anything is cultural differences, there are many cultures where it is not really acceptable to confront people, it doesn't come naturally for one to engage in a confrontation no matter if they think they're right or not, they'll avoid it and try to be agreeable. I really believe that plays a key role in this story.

    • @Haphazard-Nugget
      @Haphazard-Nugget Год назад +15

Absolutely. To add to what you said Nina, I get the vibe the movie was slightly misunderstood because of the lense from which it's viewed. This channel being american for an american audience and all. Lots of people who are confident, leaders, talkative and extroverted see these two and go "urgh i'd never LET that happen to me wtf?" but from the perspective of someone lower in the "social hierarchy". The movie protagonists (while being caricatures and exagerated) are frighteningly reaI.
I'm glad I'm not alone in this judging from some comments scrolling down: but I am unfortunately...a push over. The fear of taking action of being rude or of consequences makes it that the degree of "being taken advantage of" to a more predatory couple, this family went through is something that isn't so far fetched. Yes, the wrong decisions they took were frustrating (from a viewer stand point) but from a life lesson/fable standpoint, it's both terrifying and accurate imho, in a "in this situation. In the heat of not being able to think rationally I'd be there." Like when you're in a argument and only think of cool come back hours after the deed is done and over xD-

At first it's weird comments, then it's nothing sinister but just obvious jabs and lies, then moves on to physicality and ultimately into them being killed. At any point, they could have been assertive and stopped it but they let it go thinking it wasn't that big of a deal. They kind of became the frog in the water being boiled alive. Since the jabs and stuff started innocent enough, they didn't realize quite how badly things were getting despite the escalation being obvious to the outside viewer. It's how a lot of abusers keep their victims and its also how we end up with issues in society that just get worse and worse because no one who can is willing to put in the real work to stop it.

There have been many psychological tests regarding this and how we comply with authority figures, including those we feel inferior to (even if they aren't actually in any position of power) and, generally speaking, it's a lot more likely that the average person will comply in a negative, unknown or terrifying situation than fight or be heroic, which is a very bleak thought. It's shown that people will actually be more likely to stand up to authority IF (ironically so) someone else has directed them to do so. It comes under the same mentality (sorry, I've forgotten the name of the proven theory) that, if there is a fire or car crash for example, a lot of people will stand there and not know what to do but if a person takes charge and they get someone in the crowds attention like saying "you in the red shirt, call the emergency services. You in the blue, come and help me" etc etc, that is when teh person/people will act with courage or a clear head.
We are generally more likely to be able to be brave when given direction and, often, permission.

In this case they look for couples that are passive and submissive which is clear at the very beginning of the movie with the pool scene. When Patrick says he didn’t force them to be there he wasn’t lying. They wanted to test Bjørn and Louise to see how little backbone they had and how far they would let Patrick and Karen go. Hence the “because you let me” line at the end which summaries the point really well.

@@illogical001 Gotta ask...does this qualify a good film? I read about the movie or heard specifics or plot developments and had a good feeling what they were going for. It Just seems like the theme, the message, is the "star" of the show here and that its more of a modern "allegory",more about a comment on our deep rooted need to not be seen as problematic and ungrateful, like a textbook example on how we rather get killed than get confrontational in any way,to be seen as understanding and tolerant,"the good neighbor" takes precedent to rocking the boat in any way, even if it would be for survival.
I ended up reading alot about it after having heard about the trauma inflicted on viewers and now that i have the plot summary and have heard your thoughts,I feel like Im not missing too much, like this couple is way too meak, weak and an exaggerated stereotype for it to really be believable.
I was hoping for the couple to have the hint of a weak spine, like they accept too much shit until they stand up for themselves in some way and if They're finally done in,it would be while fighting back, albeit too late and it be in context over something ironic, how they finally just let a minor transgression slide and this dooms them but no..... seems they accept insane shit from the word and honestly reads like natural selection.
The psychotic and grotesque escalation of testing the couples fear of confrontation sounds like it would work better in litterature and could be read with symbolism and ambiguity cause the mentality they have is I guess easy to culturally understand but what transpired in the plot seems to be a grotesque exaggeration,a cautionary tale hyped up to 11.
This whole plot sounds preordained and it seems the leads devolve, like this nice couple has Death tattoed on their forehead from the word go. They get a crash course in stranger danger to no avail.
Im just curious if this is legitimately a good movie or if the praise or disgust is less cinematic or if its social commentary that makes it relevant, the following debate actually being more of the art?
Cause i only ended up reading about it.and the summary and the whole narrative just made me boil. i do get that its the darkest satire possible but I wonder if it is a good watch,a rewarding watch.
Cause it refers to our meek scandinavian mindset but the events featured is of such elevated evil and unrealistic cowardice,it seems like the white people aquivalent of screaming and in my case it would be throwing Shit at the screen.
Should i watch this despite knowing the ending(which modern, cunty Imdb was nice enough to give away) to experience this elevated social awkwardness and nightmare myself? Cause i bet its clear 45min in these protagonists will never set their foot down so it seems as scary as fitting and Ieel like i will survive that the couple doesn't deserve to live.
But from what i heard, this seems like a great blueprint to something a bit more subtle where characters are polite and scared of offending but still really want to live and see the danger in their situation. But maybe there is alot to be said for our modern mantra "Surezu might get murdered but be tolerant and open minded even if it costs you your life."
Ps. Sorry...Yes,I just smoked a fat one. Didn't mean to let the text runaway from me but...it did, lol.

They do nothing to really help Abel. All theses photo of child being kidnapped is maybe a metaphore on how it keeps happening in many family when everybody keep secret that a child suffer. I think its for that reason that in the last scene they die by lapidation that express death by shame.

Something a lot of people are missing: This movie is Danish (Denmark). The family putting up with all this behavior is satire of traditional Scandinavian politeness: You don't yell at your kids, you respect people's space, you accept hospitality without protest, you don't just leave when you're uncomfortable, etc. The other family is Dutch (Netherlands), whose culture is more open-minded and straightforward, which often makes Scandinavians feel awkward or submissive.

    • @mdp720

That's also why the US remake is probably going to suck: There's no American cultural equivalent for that level of politeness. It's just a crazy family, so there's no actual reason for them to stay. It's just another example of US horror remakes not getting it.

I think whoever wrote this movie must have lived in Denmark for a period of time and felt like there was an unnatural amount of apathy in the area. This movie is in fact Danish written and meant as a satire about the cultural pressure for social politeness to the point of ignoring one's instincts to avoid conflict because they don't want backlash for appearing rude. Nothing bad ever happened to them, but they figured the premise was a good launching point for a horror movie with the social commentary

The way you lay out the plot also makes me think this is a critique of the extremes of masculinity. Specifically BOTH sides. When you go too far into the traditional, you become mindlessly aggressive, domineering and destructive. But if you go too far into the "modern" aka more of a pacifist, you are taken advantage of and those you love will be harmed and you will be made by force or habit to simply suffer. Thus, the best solution is balance for men; knowing when you need to stand your ground and push back but also knowing when to let things roll off because it's not worth the hassle. At least in my option, that's another message form the movie.

  • @ameliah.6121
    @ameliah.6121 Год назад +20

I just watched this film for the first time, and as a dane myself I could relate to so many of the awkward situations. Especially when I go to places like the U.S. In Denmark most people don't really seek conversations, they usually avoid them at all cost, or only answer to not seem rude. We have this unspoken rule about being polite even in situations where you feel uncomfortable. In the beginning where Patrick (the dutch guy) asks if he can use the chair, you can (or at least I could) clearly see that Bjørn ( the danish man) is hestitant as to give it to him, because his daughter is using the chair, but because she's in the water at that moment, he doesn't want to seem rude, so he'll rather be a little uncomfortable via being 3 people using two chairs, than not giving up a chair that isn't being used at the moment. The same goes for when Patrick offers (I'd rather say forces) the meat to Louise. Bjørn tells her to "just take a small bite" as to not seem disrespectfull to the family who made them a nice meal. Same goes for when Bjørn ends up paying for the expensive meal at the restaurant. He doesn't want to come off as rude or disrespectful. And with Louise (the danish mom) she speaks her mind when her line is crossed big time, but because she isn't backed up by her husband, she doesn't want to seem crazy and overreacting so she retaliates. All in all this movie scares me more than a lot of other horror movies i've watched, because the way that I've been raised as a dane (with the unspoken societal politeness) makes me question when I would have stood my ground, especially when things started getting scary. And for everyone whose mad they didn't fight back at the end. Freezing up is a trauma responds, especially when you either know the dutch guys have got the balls to fight and you're used fleeing from every fight, coming your way. Most danes are way too good at shying away from conflict, so I believe a lot of danish people would freeze up in situations like this, just as the danish couple did.

The tragedy with Bjorn character is that he doesn't like himself and his life just as much as the audience does. There's many times he has a chance to "escape" but what people are failing to understand is that he didn't want to escape. From the very start Bjorn had something akin to respect and admiration for Patrick; he wanted his assertiveness and confidence. When he turns back towards the house it isn't because he cared for his daughters emotional well-being he just wanted to send more time with Patrick and stay away from his mundane life. A part of me feels that Patrick understood that as well and genuinely wanted Bjorn to join his "family"; taking him out to the gorge to try and unless his beast and subsequently showing him more of that darker side to see if he takes. Of course it doesn't though, Bjorn fails to cross over and just becomes another meek sheep to be culled.

People pleasing is a dangerous game. More often then not, you get burned but it doesnt just affect you.. I feel like that was part of it, not so much the 'traditional man' as the willingness to bend over backwards for people. There is no shortage of people who do nothing because they dont want to cause trouble, who are in toxic relationships and friendships because they simply comply. And often, its children, your spouse/other friends, that really suffer.
How many times have child molesters walked free because they were family or a friend or because it would cause a struggle for the parents? How many times do people allow abuse that they clearly see because they dont want to step up and be a whistle blower? Evil wins when good men do nothing.

Daniel Craig's character, Blomkvist, is snooping around the killer's, Stellan Skarsgard's, house. He gets caught and Skarsgard invites him back in. No threats, no knives or guns - just an invitation. Craig's character knows this is a bad idea, but social graces require that he keeps up the facade of civility. Skarsgard even comments on that later, while getting ready to torture Craig. "Why didn't you just go home?" It was a chilling scene.

This can also be related to a modern interpretation of narcissism. Towards the end we learn that this other couple is well aware that their actions are quite unorthodox, but they get away with them because their guests allow them to. This is often a reason narcissists tend to manipulate individuals. They believe that they deserve to be manipulated if they are not aware enough to realize they are being coerced which also fuels the predators ego for being able to control others they see as inferior. At the beginning we see the couple essentially playing along with social norms that they likely see as ridiculous; and as the plot progresses they begin to stay on the edge of social acceptability, slowly blurring the line of what their guests are willing to take and straying further and further from who we believed they were until they inevitably seize the playing field and reveal who they really are. Re-watching the plot, you can certainly see how this new perspective of the couple changes your interpretation from them just being weird to simply stretching the boundaries of what they can get away with for amusement. Let me know if I missed something that adds to or discredits this interpretation.

I think " Speak No Evil" is portraying what a lot of harden people have seen. People not standing up for themselves, people not leaving abusive relationships, or weaker people bullying stronger people and getting away with it. I've known people who were monsters in size get bullied by a little punk and they do nothing about it because " just turn the cheek", " It's not worth it", or " I don't want to get in trouble". People are slowly forgetting that a lot of serial killers preyed on the kindness and politeness of others to get their way with them, and I think the movie is pointing out we should stop being soo polite or else you will become a victim.. Don't act like a victim and you won't be a victim. As said, they literally made the couple undress, lay down, and get stoned to death with no weapons.. And there's people irl just like the couple that would go down the same route. Don't act like a victim and you won't be a victim.

lol nah in real life standing up for yourself will get you in trouble mostly, that wont end well
you say dont act like a victim but btchin and making a scene when you stand up for yourself is exactly you becoming the victim
bullies are always pushing people over while they stay in the safe zone
      the best bet is leave

That's not true at all. You need to stand up for yourself. There's times to learn to do it and don't, in this case of the movie they should of fought back.

@@mrchills7433 in the movie they have many chance to leave, could have just drive away while the guy is taking a piss lol
the movie is an exaggeration of people being pushed over and not do anything at all. Fighting back should be the last resort

At first this movie scared me deeply because I consider myself a polite person and would let uncomfortable situations pass as a people pleaser.
But then I remembered I'm very unsociable and I'd have to practically be years-long best friends with someone to be bothered to go out of my way to do what that family did. So I'd say I'm pretty safe 😂

Yeah look at what happend with covid, abuse from all sides, many people wouldn't speak up for others.
Over here in Australia, there are campaigns on tv saying to speak up when you see stuff bad happening.
      Meek is an overstatement.

As a Belgian I really resonate with the "polite to a fault" stereotype. We also just wave away any red flags because we dread being impolite.
Dutch people are not this way and they are quite unique for that in western Europe so I think it's really interesting that this was a European movie because I'm tired of all the American movies. They can be good but this one being European adds more relatability. But probably another reason for Americans to think we're culty weirdos after Midsommar and Hostel.

Crazy to me the only time Bjorn showed any balls was when he was yelling at the family he was supposed to protect.

This is actually a really cool movie. The killers are kinda like psycopath killers in the way that they choose their victim. Also, the way they manipulate people and say it's the victim's fault because they fell for it implies that they let people who don't fall for it live. It makes me remember of a Brazilian serial killer that only killed girls that would fall for charm and would follow him into the woods to get frisky, he said it was the girl's fault for falling in love for him.

The whole premise of this film reminds me of that scene with Martin Vanger in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Not gonna spoil it, but to sum it up in a quote: 'It's hard to believe that the fear of offending can be stronger than the fear of pain. But you know what? It is.'
Interestingly, the book was written by a Swedish author. I know their cultures are close, but I don't know if this is something specific to the Nordics.

Yeah. Also the whole “don’t worry, as long as I’m here nothing will happen to you” is so hollow when you allow anything to happen to YOU.
this is definite an ad for why you shouldn’t be a doormat for the sake of strangers feelings.

Such a tragic story and a cautionary tale about the potential dangers of passivity. I was horrified by the ending. However, my anger and frustration toward the Danes overshadowed my horror. There were so many red flags and many opportunities to get the heck out. Politeness quickly turned into downright foolishness. There's absolutely no excuse for it. The moment Bjorn turned around and went back, their fate was sealed. They couldn't even fight for their lives. A trauma response, I'm sure.
I am eager to see how the remake compares. I am a big James McAvoy fan.
