It’s a song. The Beatles wrote songs with the clear intention to allow multiple levels of interpretation. It is one of the key elements of songwriting that they were very conscious of. While my Guitar gently weeps is not only about a girl, it’s about the band and also about society. I enjoy the song because it is possible to see in it what you would like to see. That’s not a coincidence - they meant it be that way. Songs are adjusted and developed as part of the recording process. John would have loved it.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps is a song about how George saw himself as being surrounded by people who'd lost their awareness of their immortality and divine spark. It echoes a St. Thomas (gnostic) gospel quote,"I am amazed at how this great wealth has made its home in this poverty," and no doubt similar sentiments were reflected in the doctrine George was drawn to at the time.
Why allegedly, would any of the good discerning public ever idol worship, the mediocre group, the beet less, the Tavistock helliweird, satanick masonick, created, multimillionaire, deceiver, shill, sellouts whose only aim was to subvert the youth and a group of puppets that didn’t write any of their songs, allegedly?
THANK YOU. It reminds me of something a famous songwriter once said (I'm thinking Elvis Costello) ... something like, "They're songs, not journal entries." Or letters, for that matter. They're not always literally "about" or "to" some single specific person or event. They're often a mix of inspirations and influences and imagination. When there's a real-life inspiration or person involved, that's often just a starting point to build on with more inspirations. So, no, while "Hey Jude" may have started out inspired by Julian Lennon's name, the song is not "to" or "about" him, any more than "Martha My Dear" is about or to a sheep-dog. The name was a starting point. Remember, during the Beatles John actively mocked people who tried to "figure out" and "decode" what Beatles songs "meant" or "were about". I know that some of my songs -- ones which have come most easily and out of nowhere -- probably sound terribly personal; but at the same time I go, "Where did THAT come from?", as they seem to have little to do with my life at the time. They just wanted to be that kind of song. Even when one is in a very good, contented place, a sad song might come out -- maybe based on other periods of one's life. Or maybe just based on imagination, or wanting to write a sad song. Sometimes one verse is inspired by, or addressed to, one person, while another verse might be addressed to another person -- leaving it to synchronicity and the listener to invent a connection between the two different subjects. (Frankly, to me, different parts of "Now and Then" sound like they might be addressing different people in different contexts.) And as you say, that is often very conscious.
He was also an imaginative songwriter who appreciated wordplay and surreal imagery for its own sake. He's also the one who mocked Beatles fans for trying to "decode" Beatles songs, thinking they had figured out "the meaning" and "real life stories" behind them.
It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks or believes, because above all else this is a song… shared with the world, and if you care about The Beatles… you will appreciate the gift.
I think we’re mistaken when we assume a song to be written for one person and not another. Most are ‘composites’ - Hey Jude started as a song for Julian and became a song with elements for John. Now and Then could be inspired by Yoko, Paul, May… the unifying theme is separation and longing for, and counting on reunion (imho!)
If it was written in 1977 John could even have had on his mind Elvis or Mal Evans (Beatles roadie) who had both died during that period as a tribute to them. Who knows?
There is heavy indication that when the Beatles broke up, John and Paul didn't leave on Good Terms. Years later John writing Now and Them as an expression of his regrets about what happened between him and Paul does make a pretty interesting story, and Paul finishing the song is very poetic ending
so, Paul & John were planning to meet in late December 1980 to write songs together, so the songsComin Up & Starting Over wihch came out in very late 1979 & 1980 were songs they wrote for theirupcoming reunion, because if you listen to the words of Coming Up, "you wanna friend to last for one that will never fade away, we could meet together, making music endlessly stick around, comin up" (from Comin Up live in Kampuchea & in some of his live versions in RUclips) and Starting Over words " why don't we take us alonetake a trip somewhere far far away, we'll be together all alone again, like we used to in the early days"this words were ringing in my ears for a long time, they were singing about their plan to writetogether again, & maybe a Beatles Reunion. I may not be the only one who noticed the words, I don't know. Its a waste, what could have been if John wasn't killed.
Now and Then also seems to connect with Paul's "Dear Friend", his heartfelt reply to John's "How Do You Sleep?", which not only featured similar piano, but also has the repeated line "Are you afraid, or is it true?" This was while the two were duking it out in songs and in open letters to each other in the music press, but John would never respond to "Dear Friend" in his lifetime; the two had a private meeting where they decided to stop airing the dirty laundry in public. And now, we've got a bit of a reply in "I know it's true", where John - finally at peace with himself at the time of recording - admits that he was putting up a facade and he owes a lot to Paul whom he really doesn't want to lose. Looking at everything Paul has told and sung about their relationship since ("Here Today"), the two did have a kind of bond that makes it seem a bit silly that a "darling" sung in the least developed part of the song would be the factor that decides that this song must be about Yoko. Forced interpretation? Maybe, but a few years later, John would open Double Fantasy with the sound of a chiming bell as a deliberate bookend to the funeral bell that opened John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band ten years earlier. We'll never get a proper answer, of course, but I definitely want to posit that he knew what he was doing.
@@loosilu No one can be proved right or wrong on this, but keep in mind that Paul is selling a record. He knows fully well that saying the song is about him will generate far more interest than if it's just another love song to Yoko.
When I first heard the song I assumed it was John expressing his feelings to Yoko as they took a trial separation and May Pang replaced Yoko. He is saying although we are separating I still love you and am grateful to you as he sings it's all because of you.
He wrote it several years after they got back together. Paul believes it's about him. He and John had their own language, so if Paul thinks it's about him, he's right.
It's also possible the song was about Julian, his son from his previous marriage. Tho seeing that when the Beatles Broke Up, John and Paul didn't leave on Good Terms, years later John writing Now and Then because he feels regret about what happened between them does make an interesting story
@@ryanhau1073 Oh, for years they sent messages back and forth to each other in their songs. I think it's the most likely explanation. They had concrete plans to work together again in January 1981.It's funny how so many people minimize their relationship. Their partnership literally changed the world. It is the most significant relationship in each other's lives, even above wives. Their shared language was music, and no one could penetrate tht bubble.
My thoughts would say it's paul he's thinking about , because why would he say that about Yoko when he was living with her . That is something you would say to someone who used to be in your life and isn't so much now ,and you miss them now and then .So I believe that line is for Paul ❤️❤️❤️❤️ love them all four. But Paul is my Heart's Delight 💞XXXX💞
Upon first hearing Lennon's demo, it seemed evident to me that it was by no means a finished work. The lyrics were incomplete and at times Lennon just warbled sounds to indicate the melody. Whether it was really intended for Paul or not will remain a mystery, but the fact that he let it gather dust for three years prior to his death suggests that it was not one of his priorities. There have been many songs by both John and Paul over the years which have been interpreted as messages to each other. Beatles tragics tend to cling to any such possibilities - presumably for emotional reasons.
A translation, so others can more readily access your input: This song is aimed at Paul for sure! John was with Yoko and little Sean. He was with his family, but very isolated from the music world by choice to take care of the baby. John and Paul have a connection, an impressive connection, even spiritual. Even in dreams they were frequent between the two. John openly declared that Paul was his first great love. Now if people don't want to accept that as fact, that's their right, but clearly Now and Then is John talking to his best friend about how much he misses him. There are many coincidences that fit perfectly with other issues. Many things we will never know about them, but one thing is certain, they loved each other deeply!
If you look at the vocal tracking (wings of pegasus had it on his channel) where John is singing . the lines charting the vocal actual look like it says Paul. Well it does to me. I screen shot it but can't share here of course.
Sure. I think that aspect of the song is for Yoko and maybe all of it is but there are parts that don't really fit. After all, John lived with Yoko. Why would he miss her? Anyhoo, I wanted to keep the video slick and not go into a long discussion because about fate, sub-conscious tells in lyrics etc and just set the song within context- which is that 'now and then' was not just a standalone song but the key phrase that was then echoed in words John last said to Paul and then re-appeared in the song Carl Perkins wrote. Ultimately, we'll all draw our own conclusions.
@@loosilu You're absolutely right, which is why Paul refused to allow John to sing it when he wanted it. It was Paul's feelings about the coming end of their partnership and John just wouldn't have gotten it.
The song is probably about Yoko, but it sounds like the phrase was something that John used as that’s the last thing he said to Paul. In hindsight we want to believe the better story of it being about Paul because it adds to this mythical quality of the Beatles. Sometimes a rose is just a rose…
Exactly. The song is OBVIOUSLY about Yoko, but Beatles fans want it to be about Paul, so they're bending the lyrics into pretzels to try to make it so.
Sometimes it is, but this video is not simply about who Now and Then was aimed at, there is a deeper significance to the phrase, or not, as the case may be- as explained in the video. For me, the story gets interesting when we connect Now and Then with John's last words and the song Carl Perkins wrote.
That's what so fascinating about music. Even though the writer intended it to be one thing, the listener can interpret the song differently and give it a new life.
@@c.7610 It’s not at all “obvious” that it’s about Yoko. There just isn’t any logical reason to suppose it’s about Paul. Sometimes a song is just a song, and it’s not explicitly “about” anybody. Yes, as songwriters go, Lennon leaned towards the autobiographical more than many (McCartney, for example, whose songs were about obviously fictional scenarios more frequently), but that doesn’t mean every lyric of every song can be mined for specific autobiographical details.
I dont think most of the songs writt had hidden meanings….they wrote music and put in lyrics that would rhyme basically…….but its fun to imagine what they meant…it gives US meaning in our lives
It came from above and it is to get us to pray to the Father individually so we can save the people on this planet from self destruction. And it's working.
I think any talk about exactly who John was referring to is a bit silly. To me it seems more a generic, generalized statement that encompassed anybody and nobody at the same time. In my heart I think John was thinking about everyone just as he did with In my life. Either way I sure miss my hero who opened my eyes, heart and blew my mind with the best kickass rock and roll ever ! The Beatles were and are the very best band this world has ever known or ever will. ❤
Well thats incorrect cos you can clearly hear paul saying that George was contact by yoko about the unfinished music on the tape and he contacted paul and asked him if he wanted to fo it
The idea that the song is about Paul is pure fantasy. But I don’t know why people are assuming that the only other possibility is that it’s about Yoko. Lennon was a song writer. Sometimes a song is just a song. It might take inspiration from real things the writer has felt or experienced, but it isn’t necessarily autobiography in a literal sense. Who is Bungalow Bill about? Who is the Eggman? The answer to these sorts of questions CAN be “nobody in particular”, you know.
Well those were deliberately nonsensical (and fun) songs. This is deliberately reflective. What it is about or who it is about is up to the listener. John is reflecting on some things he realises and asking us to understand without being specific. When songs were about Yoko he said so in the lyrics.
Bungalow Bill was Richard Cooke III (real event) and the Eggman was purported to be Eric Burdon of the Animals (in joke). 🤪 But yeah, you're right. Even when inspired by a real person though, once the song is out there, its becomes art and its meaning no longer belongs to its author. Meaning lives in the ears of its listeners. The way the song has been arranged now makes it feel more like a less intricate version of In My Life, a wistful reminiscence of those we miss, rather than an appeal to a specific person.
@@Kieop Agreed. The words and music are open to interpretation. But for me it is a “Beatles song” because it features innovative use of technology, great vocals, backing, hints of a range of possible but unknowable meaning and great guitar along with precise and thoughtful drumming. The band seems to have enjoyed working on this one and it shows in the quality of the music.
its the im sorry yoko, take me back song by lennon. this was written during their long separation. johns last album was practically a collection of love songs for her
He was back with Yoko after his lost weekend it’s not about Yoko in my view, more than likely Paul was replaced in 66 the comparisons between the two pre 66 are obvious
The song could be about May Pang. I don't buy the whole "for Paul" writing on the tape. No one seems to have actually seen the tape and there doesn't appear to even be a photo of it anywhere. If it was true, I feel sure a lot more would have been made of it and Paul would have mentioned it on all the interviews recently and we would have seen photos. I'm not convinced but hey, you never know, if someone can prove it definitely, let's hear it. Personally I think it's just another internet rumour that's been repeated ad nauseam...
@@sharefail The fact that you can’t trace it should tell you everything you need to know - that and the fact that such a miraculously good PR talking point has had absolutely no mention made of it in the promotion of this record. It’s pure, unadulterated, 100% wishful thinking bullshit. People want to rid themselves of the nagging knowledge that all of this has been done without Lennon’s approval or knowledge, which all goes away if we convince ourselves that it was what he intended all along. That way, it was a Beatles song all along, and seems much more “authentic”. The psychological motivation behind this way-too-convenient rumour couldn’t be more obvious.
If Now and Then had been written about Paul, or with the intention of doing it with Paul, or John had personally written “for Paul” on the cassette, what possible motivation would there be for suppression of any of these astounding facts? Why would it not form a part of the official promotion such as the video documentary? There has never been any mention of this in any official source. It has emerged purely from the fanciful imaginations of the online fanbase, based on a wilful misinterpretation of the fact that YOKO passed a cassette marked “for Paul”, for obvious reasons, to Paul McCartney, after it had been agreed by all that the surviving Beatles would develop finished tracks from some Lennon demos she had in her possession. A lot of Beatles fans seem incapable of recognising when their wishful thinking fan-brain is getting in the way of their critical thinking.
I think the video makes it clear that the 'for Paul' story is a rumour. You have chosen to make that rumour the focus of your comments but it's actually not the focus of the video.
It’s not just”wishful thinking”of delusional fans. Giles Martin, Peter Jackson, writers from the New York and L.A. Times, Rolling Stone, Howard Stern, just to name a few all think it’s for Paul.
@@gretchennelson7056 None of those people have any greater insight into what John Lennon was thinking as he sat alone at his piano half a century ago than you or I do. So, as an appeal to authority goes, that was pretty weak.
The song is directed at Paul. It was to thank him for getting John and Yoko back together again after they split in the early 70’s. Listen to the lyrics.
Don't know if you made it to the end of my video but I feature the bridge at the end. I think that aspect of the song is for Yoko but there are parts that don't really fit. John lived with Yoko. Why would he miss her? Sometimes a song is about more than one person or starts off as one thing and ends as another. In any case, the video is mostly about how the phrase 'now and then' echoes through other events. Thanks for watching.
Paul believes it's about him, and he and John communicated through songs. There is no way on God's earth Paul would spend 30 years trying to produce a song about Yoko.
@@sharefail "John lived with Yoko. Why would he miss her?" I enjoyed your video, but I can only assume from this question that you have never been married. Lots of ways to miss someone you're married to if you're not as close as you once were, or your relationship has changed from what it was when you were younger.

Really? This story of Carl Perkins sounds so fake . If it was true, Why didn't Perkins mentioned it in the documentary about him? Have you seen the documentary? I did. He talks about Paul crying when he listened to the song. But not a single word about John saying it to Paul. Is this voice here, Linda's voice? If so, then it is true, or she decided to tell a lie. Because the composer of the song didn't say anything about it. And he said what Linda told him. It was something very different. Now, just think for a minute. You have just said they were supposed to compose again in December. So they were talking a lot for this project. Jack Douglas also confirmed it. No way, a friend always in touch with another friend would would ask "think of me now and then" How come? Impossible. One of the stories in this video is fake. Possibly this corny one about John asking Paul to think of him now and then. Besides, there is not any information about it in any reliable source. It is the first time I read the demos are not the original one. And you didn't explain how you think so. It is true that I also never saw any confirmation about the For Paul story. But I really read an information from a person who knows someone who worked for Apple .And he affirmed it was indeed written For `Paul in the box with the demo . But..is it for Paul. It seems so. I agree with that. At least Giles Martin also said that the song is a love letter from John to Paul.
I don’t believe the Perkins story either. I believe the part about Paul crying so hard he had to leave the room as that makes total sense but I have never believed the other part of the story.
Is anybody else sick of McCartney’s bullshit I have never seen anyone with a bigger ego then him. Why does everything have to always be about him? He hasn’t done anything good on his own in about twenty years.
Has Paul said it's about him? I've seen plenty of people say they think it's about him but I've not come across Paul saying it's about him, unless I've missed that.
Paul has NEVER said it was about him, not once that I know of. A hell of a lot of other people have. You might be confusing the song with Jealous Guy which Paul DID say was about him. But as far as I know he hasn’t said a word about this.

@@loosilu the probability will always be there. they were both his great loves for different reasons.
@@3hooks781 Paul is sure it's about him.
@@loosilu No one can be proved right or wrong on this, but keep in mind that Paul is selling a record. He knows fully well that saying the song is about him will generate far more interest than if it's just another love song to Yoko.
@@loosilu I agree. The bridge might make sense with her in mind. The rest of the song doesn’t.
What a genius Lennon was and what a voice
It is amazing to me that people can see pictures of Paul, even in this video, after late 1966, and Not realize it's not JPM...wake up dopes!
Oh dear how sad for you.
I prefer the demo also i wish they didnt cut out that one verse.
Definitely a song about Paul….and the fun they had back in the day…
My thoughts would say it's paul he's thinking about , because why would he say that about Yoko when he was living with her . That is something you would say to someone who used to be in your life and isn't so much now ,and you miss them now and then .So I believe that line is for Paul ❤️❤️❤️❤️ love them all four. But Paul is my Heart's Delight 💞XXXX💞
The song is about PAUL. ☮️💟
You don't need to let the cat out the bag. 😒
I always love to see Jeff Lynne talked about
A translation, so others can more readily access your input: This song is aimed at Paul for sure!
There is no indication that John ever said that
If you look at the vocal tracking (wings of pegasus had it on his channel) where John is singing . the lines charting the vocal actual look like it says Paul. Well it does to me. I screen shot it but can't share here of course.
Amazing info
Aw, thank you. I tried.
@@sharefailYou certainly did and thankyou for this.
Not so sure...would John call Paul "darling" as he says, twice, in the missing bridge?
I think he would
"Oh Darling" is about John. They had their own language no one else understood.
@@loosilu
You're absolutely right, which is why Paul refused to allow John to sing it when he wanted it. It was Paul's feelings about the coming end of their partnership and John just wouldn't have gotten it.
@@patriciaedwards5183 Many non-native English speaker initially heard the song as "Oh Johnny" before seeing it written down.
You do realize that the car crash scene in this video is about JPM, don't you?
I thought their last day together in studio was August 20, and the song was "I Want You (She's So Heavy)"?
Where this version with the bridge comes from???? It's awesome!!! It even sounds way better than the original
Vimeo. Search now and then missing bridge.
I don't think they should have omitted the bridge, that somehow diminished the value of how John had written it.
It's largely about pizza with elements of friendships and hamburgers.
Who cares? You’re such a cynic. If it adds to the lure of the Beatles and extends their reach to younger generations, here here!
It's for paul
I wonder what hidden meaning "Wild honey pie" from the White album is about?
I dont think most of the songs writt had hidden meanings….they wrote music and put in lyrics that would rhyme basically…….but its fun to imagine what they meant…it gives US meaning in our lives
I was only joking about 'Wild honey pie' but I agree with you thanks@@kelcritcarroll
A dark time in history
Even today 4 from Liverpool changed music for history
Paul once said John said to him think of me now and then
James Paul McCartney died in car crash on September 11 1966 and was replaced by William (Billy). This is the truth no matter what!
It came from above and it is to get us to pray to the Father individually so we can save the people on this planet from self destruction. And it's working.
I notice 'Real Love' is featured as #2 and #22 are these the same tracks or a different version of the same song or an error?
Firstly, thanks for spotting an error. Second, I'm not sure what you mean. Can you explain a bit more?
I think any talk about exactly who John was referring to is a bit silly. To me it seems more a generic, generalized statement that encompassed anybody and nobody at the same time. In my heart I think John was thinking about everyone just as he did with In my life. Either way I sure miss my hero who opened my eyes, heart and blew my mind with the best kickass rock and roll ever ! The Beatles were and are the very best band this world has ever known or ever will. ❤
' .. has ever known or ever will ' I couldn't agree more.
So the very last chord the Beatles ever played together was an .... Am.
Now and then It’s a letter to Paul from John in a song

Just amother guess. Could it have been about May Pang?
"Now and Then" is all about missing........ Ringo!
Well thats incorrect cos you can clearly hear paul saying that George was contact by yoko about the unfinished music on the tape and he contacted paul and asked him if he wanted to fo it
It would be nice if people didn't look for "hidden" meanings in songs. They need to embrace their superficial beauty.
I think the the song is about Julia , his mother. No Paul, not Yoko, not a distant friend. He dealt with his mother’s passing his whole life.
Absolutely.
But yeah, you're right.
If John eanted to record with Paul in 1977 and John didnt dir until 1980 why not? Paul had a recording studio in his home.
its the im sorry yoko, take me back song by lennon. this was written during their long separation. johns last album was practically a collection of love songs for her

I don’t feel that it’s about Yoko at all!
AI brings together Frankenstein with Burke and Hare.
Not a Beatles song.
It is obviously about Yoko. No hidden message!
I did wonder if May Pang was in the frame. She's a big part of John's story. I couldn't trace the source of the 'for Paul' rumour.
It's about Lena
Most funny thing heard
Thank you.
@@sharefail It’s the focus of a lot of comments in the comment section, though.

The hidden meaning is “let’s now destroy our legacy with a less than mediocre offering”..!
It's obvious especially due to the bridge that's not there in the final version that he's writing about Yoko
