Honestly, "Waiting for Columbus" is one of the best live albums ever. I'm biased toward the versions on it because it's the first way I ever heard their music. The studio versions are usually slower and to me not as vibrant. Did get to see them in concert at the Warner Theater in DC but Lowell George (the lead singer and guitarist) had died a year or so prior to that. It was still a great concert.

That is indeed Tower of Power Horns on both versions. They absolutely tear it up on Waiting for Columbus! So glad y'all are back in The Feat! Live is REAL, and I almost always lean to live material from my favorites, Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic, Little Feat, String Cheese Incident, Billy Strings, etc. You're about ready for "Mercenary Territory" now, from WFC! Want a straight out blazing rocker? "Tripe Face Boogie" from WFC! Good observation on the unique art work on Feat's covers by Neon Park!! Kenny Gradney (bass), Sam Clayton (percussion), and Richie Hayward (drums) (RIP brother!) were a helluva rhythm section and give Feat that unique backbone! Backing vocals on this album included Bonnie Raitt and Emmylou Harris!

I'm finding the one MAJOR difference between our generations is that I (we) are "album oriented" and they are "single or playlist" oriented. Saw LF in April, where they performed "Waiting for Columbus" in its' entirety (45th anniversary). Even though they were missing some key personnel from the original tour (Lowell George, Richie Hayward, Paul Barrere and the TOP horns), they still put on a great show. It was great seeing such a die-hard group of fans from back in the day as well as new converts; several walkers, canes, and hearing aids in the crowd but a good time was had by all. Reminded me of one of my favorite Little Feat songs, "Old Folks Boogie" from the Time Loves A Hero LP, you should give it a listne some time. One highlight of the live album for me was "Apolitical Blues" with guest lead guitar by Mick Taylor (John Mayall, Rolling Stones). Then Lowell George appeared on Taylor's solo album. Also, it was Little Feat's Lowell George's inclusion of the Rickie Lee Jones song "Easy Money" on his solo album that paved the way for her getting a record contract. If you hear a guitar with a flanger effect that would be Paul Barrere, as opposed to Lowell George usually on slide.

    @jondeur2686 2 года назад +2

Both versions are wonderful. In the studio Little Feat were amazingly tight, controlled, and creative. They added layers to studio versions that were not possible on stage. On this song, Billy Payne showed what a virtuoso he was. The clavinet is wonderfully funky, but the organ is the real standout. You talked about the fade-out. The organ at the very end of the song is so powerful and evocative. I’m thinking NOOO don’t stop now, Payne is just starting to roll!
Bill Payne, Richie Hayward and Kenny Gradney are all virtuoso musicians. And they all sold their souls for the song. Any solos they took stayed in the groove, in the song.
The live version is just another great example of how talented these guys were.

EDIT: The reasons for my preferring the live version are -- the slightly slower, smoky pace; the more visceral vocal from Lowell George (May he rest in perfect peace); the lyrics are slightly more bawdy and playful; it runs longer (so more enjoyment; and MOST OF ALL the ending where the drums/bass work together and then just the drums and the perfect way Richie Hayward ends it.

Lex gets my rolling-off-a-log easy vote for the live version! The studio track has the fully realized perfected design, but lacks that dark emotional vibe that reinforces the lyrics with full meaning. The opening molasses-like narco bass notes paints a picture of an "anything goes" club where the legal and the illegal are comfortably shoulder-to-shoulder and yet there's that ever present feeling of danger there too. It's late 70s and people are rolling up dollar bill straws and snorting coke lines off the countertop and tables. The upper/downer combo of coke and whiskey is essentially a weaker version of the infamous speedball which combines coke and heroin. Lowell George, Little Feat's singer and slide guitar ace, to his detriment, really indulged in this dangerous mix. So in this club setting the social atmosphere can go from very friendly and outgoing to the sudden flash of angry belligerence. The potential for a gun to be brought out is real. The concert take ideally captures the potential menace of how it felt to be in that joint. The Garden of Eden (weed and psychedelics) was ruined when cocaine came on the scene and brought along its big vicious dogs and guns.

I was blessed to be at the LA show on the waiting for Columbus tour. It was a moment frozen in time and as a 19 year old, it did changed my life. That show was soooo special. The crowd bounced to the groove and it was a homecoming party - musician’s musicians. The crowd was a who’s who of the LA music scene at that time. I’ve worked and been to many Feat shows since and it was never the same, except maybe in Phoenix years later with Craig Fuller channeling Lowell (perhaps too much so) on a rotating stage. The Spanish moon version at that show was probably my #2 Feat show moment, but nowhere near that of the Shrine Auditorium show in LA on June 18, 1978 just a year before he died.

In late June of 1979, I was driving on Sunset Blvd on my way to the Rainbow to buy tickets for Lowell George's First Los Angeles Solo Performance, only to hear the announcement of his death the night before in the Washington, DC area on the radio. I have never been the same since, and neither has Little Feat. In 1987, I attended the reunion show in LA where Eric Clapton showed up dressed in an impeccable suit to play Apolitical Blues; he sounded sad; the band never got up to speed, not even on Let It Roll. These days, I feel for Bill, Sam, and Kenny; they try, but the magic left with Mr. George's passing; even with Paul, they couldn't regain the magic. Waiting for Columbus was the definitive moment in time to seal their legacy. In 2019, they celebrated their 50th anniversary, 40 years after the magic had left the building; in June, we celebrate the 45th anniversary of the passing of that magic. RIP, My dear Feats.

Lex! Go get the tape! Seriously, sorry Nick, I couldn't resist it. I like both versions equally as I think they do what it says on the tin. The studio version has a great production, so it's great. The live version allows the band to stretch out more, showcasing their amazing playing, so it's great! Love it NicknLex, more Feat please. All the best tracks are mentioned below in the comments.

Had the great good fortune to see Little Feat with Lowell George on the Waiting For Columbus Tour back in 1978 way up in New Hampshire. One of the best concerts, of the over 500 I have attended in my life. Saw them a bunch of times after Lowell passed. RIP Lowell, Paul Barrere and Richie Hayward. You guys were GREAT.

At least on Waiting for Columbus, it literally is Tower of Power providing the horn section. You can just about make out the hat-tip at the end of "Spanish Moon."
I will stand firm that the Correct Version of "Dixie Chicken" is the Waiting for Columbus version - BUT it has to have "Tripe Face Boogie" immediately after, or it's not complete. For things easier to take as individual songs, "All That You Dream," "Rock and Roll Doctor," and I think "Mercenary Territory" would be good follow-ups.
For a studio song, "Easy To Slip," hands down. Let It Roll is also an excellent album, but it's both very '80s and recorded after Lowell George died, so it has a very different flavor.

Little Feat is currently on a "Waiting for Columbus" tour to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the album. They are playing the whole album from first song to last song. Got to see them with some college friends (this was the soundtrack of our college years) in Charlotte, NC. They did play a couple of extra songs as encores. Highly recommend that you try to go if you can.

Few albums match, let alone exceed the quality of the music performed by this great band, Little Feat, and especially live! Hearing this band play this album live in concert from about 100 feet away from the stage, is a memory so burned into my soul, that I’m mentally and cosmically returned to the arena whenever I hear it.
Funny, you heard their studio recording first and think of it as how the tempo should be. The opposite is true for me.
Hearing the live album takes me back ...almost 50 years and a few thousand miles away now. Such wonderful music!!! The live version is always going to be my favorite! Long live the Little Feat! RIP Lowell, et al,.

Hi Guys, really hard to choose as I loved both versions. I do wish either track had been a bit longer. The studio fade out was too soon. Really enjoyed that. You should check out a dvd box set called "The Old Grey Whistle Test " which was a music programme that went on for years here in England and I watched as a teenager in the 70's +. The dvd's inc' Little Feat's first ever tv appearance singing "Rock & Roll Doctor" It's a brilliant set as it contains many first ever tv appearances, by David Bowie, Elton John, Alice Cooper, There is Bob Marley & the Wailers, Kenny Loggings with Messina, Hall & Oates, XTC, Garry Moore & Phil Lynott, Sade, Supertramp, and the list goes on. It's all nostalgia for me but will definitely be enjoyed by you both as a piece of music history. I've had the box set for many years and it's still not far from my dvd player. Great reaction, we must have more from this group. Thankyou. Byeee Jim X

The proper version of Rock & Roll Doctor from OGWT used to be on RUclips, but every video that I can find now has a really bad edit/cut, and just doesn't seem "right". The other track was Fat Man In The Bathtub, and the YT version of that seems to be OK.

Got to see them in Portland the tour after this was recorded. Lowell was still with us at that point. I’ve seen them many many times over the years and had the pleasure of being invited to chat for an hour or so on their tour bus several years ago by Bill Payne the keyboard player. Tower of Power was one of my go to concert bands back in the 70s. Really hope you guys start getting in to more of their music. Here are a few suggestions: You’ve Got To Funkifize”, Get Yo Feet Back On The Ground, I Got The Chop, It’s Not The Crime, Squibb Cakes which is a 7+ minute instrumental. Happy listening! Love your channel!!!

I was lucky enough to see Little Feat live in London in the 1970s when they were part of a Warner Bros records tour. They were brilliant and when they were followed by the Doobie Brothers, the Doobs got booed, ha ha. Everyone was chanting, we want Feat. I think Montrose might have been on the same bill. More Little Feat please. Keep up the good work.

I’ve seen them a few times but only since they regrouped in ‘89 with Craig Fuller singing Lowell George’s songs. It was always great. They had a good run of studio albums in the beginning from their sloppy, Stonsey debut up through The Last Record Album. For a really interesting marathon, check out the three (!) versions of “Willin’”. One on their debut, one on the follow up, and one on Waiting For Columbus. The progression there is crazy!
Also, the regrouped version had a couple hits from their first album back. Hate to Lose Your Loving and Let it Roll. You might recognize the latter from a bunch of 90s movie trailers.
