Little Feat were backed by our friends the Tower of Power horn section for this set Believe me there is more on the 2 disc set, much more.
They used to call Little Feat “the best band that you’ve never heard of”. Unfortunately, it’s still a true statement. I’ve been listening to them for over 50 years, and they’re definitely one of my top five favorite bands.
My top 5 shifts around. LF isn't always in there, but they are a lot of the time--and they're NEVER our of my top 10.
“Old School” never sounded so good. Bought this when released and I still can’t put it down. A personal favorite as well.
I have also heard them referred to as "the loosest tightest band", I completely agree.

Ah, man, that album is sooo good. Others from it to check out: Mercenary Territory, All That You Dream, Day or Night, Fat Man In the Bathtub...yeah, all fire.
"Fat Man in the Bathtub" is my forever favorite. "Rock and Roll Doctor" also smokes. And "Dixie Chicken" and "Tripe Face Boogie" as a set will be 15 minutes well-spent - it's magic. (Has to be both of them together.)
My mom met Bill Payne (the keyboard guy) backstage at a concert once, and said several years into touring he *still* had nasty stage fright before going out.

73 years old, grew up in Baltimore, they played 3 shows at the Lisner Auditorium in DC recorded this over a 3 night span. Was lucky to have been there
Little Feat were master musicians and absolutely phenomenal on stage. They were like the Allman Brothers crossed with Steely Dan.
The Feats were one of the greatest live shows to ever occupy a stage. If they were in town there was a party going on.
I loved this album so much I had it on vinyl; cassette; 8 track and CD.
This live Album belongs to the best Live Albums in Music History, so goooood.
I'm a musician of over 60 years, and a huge Little Feat fan. Your observations are spot on.
A quick story. I saw Little Feat opening for Fleetwood Mac at the Forum in Los Angeles. Lowell George was still with them then. When they came onstage, you could tell that there were maybe a couple of hundred Feat fans in the audience. But when they finished their set, there were about 17,000 new Little Feat fans, on their feet, going apesxxt. They are musician's musicians. In every position. With groovemaster, Richie Hayward on drums. An absolute master of second line drumming. Enhanced by Sam Clayton on percussion. Kenny Gradney on bass, Bill Payne on keys, Paul Barrere on guitar, and of, Lowell George, on slide guitar and vocals. And on this recording, the Tower of Power Horns.
Wow! This is the real deal folks.
One of the great live albums of all time. Mercenary Territory off this album is the song I strongly suggest.
That's the keyboard wizard named Billy Payne. Sadly the drummer Ritchie Hayward died a few years ago. The feat were unbelievable

Little Feat are so underrated. Some of the greatest musicians ever. Lowell George was a raging ball of fire that quickly burned out too soon.
Lowell George is one of my top three favorite musicians. Multi-instrumentalist (especially that sweet, sweet slide guitar), singer, songwriter, arranger, producer, engineer, front man, band leader --- he could do it all. Unfortunately, he was a compulsive workaholic and had a great appetite for many things.
One of the best live albums ever ,it has great production sound quality that is as good as studio production .. The songs are uplifting and so funky ..
I love that you don't stop the music. You just let it flow over you like we did when it was first coming out. You rock.

You're hearing the Tower of Power horn section, this is the best recording of this song. Also, in the live video version, each band member walks off the stage one at a time until just the drummer is left. Great upload Chod!

It's about damn time... So many great tunes by these guys. I've seen them many times in concert. More please... and it's time they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
My fave track of theirs is _Willin'_
I listened them them non stop back in the early 70’s. I think wore several of their 8 tracks out.

Parliament, before Tower of Power there was Parliament.
Little Feat played the Newcastle City Hall on 26th & 27th July 1977; I was at one of those concerts, in a seat quite near the stage, and they were one of the best bands I ever saw! Unfortunately Lowell George died in 1979, which was hammer blow! What a shame, he had so much to offer. RIP Lowell 🙏

The Horn section was Tower of Power. They helped to make this a kick ass song.
You end up with just the drum because they have each walked off stage one by one. He also introduced the Tower of Power Horns at the end

LOL. You had the same reaction as I when I heard this album as a teenager in the 1970's. AMAZING. This music transcends generations, Cheers mate. We have met through this music. AMAZING.
A few things about this...
The current configuration of Little Feat (which is really good - probably the best they've been in a good while) is touring for the 45th anniversary of this album. They'll be playing the whole thing from beginning to end. Depending on the particular city, they'll have different opening acts with them. For the Los Angeles shows, Hot Tuna is with them (another group you should explore).
Bill Payne is the Keyboard player. He's worth the price of admission. While Little Feat was figuring out who to add to the current configuration of the band (a couple of long term members died in recent years), Bill occupied his time touring with the Doobie Brothers. He's back with Little Feat now.
You enjoyed the horns on this - I'm not surprised. That's the Tower of Power horn section. They're not fooling around!
I have tickets to see them in Chesterfield, MO is a couple of months. I only wish that Craig Fuller could be with them. He has always fit nicely into Lowell's considerable shoes. I think Pure Prairie League is playing in St. Louis around the same time.
unfortunately they now have a major hole in their lineup (Paul Barrere) and missing Ritchie Haywood and of course Lowell. Doesn't matter what lineup they have now it will never be the same. Bill Payne is the only original member left. :(

I was glad they played this one when I saw them last summer. I was sad they didn't play rock and roll doctor though but it was still a great show. Not quite Dead and Company but still rocking..

It's so funky. At one time the opening of Spanish Moon was the most sampled piece of music in the industry...allegedly.

I remember the original, Lowell George-led Little Feat playing at Will Rogers Auditorium in Ft Worth when I was a kid, but he died of a heart attack at 34, and it was the reformed, Craig Fuller Little Feat that I saw play in the late 1980s, early ‘90s at La Zona Rosa in Austin. They played around a lot for a few years, released some very good records, and had a cult following based on the original band but excited about the new stuff. I saw them open for the Allman Brothers Band in Austin and at Six Flags Over Texas, and those were excellent shows, but I remember best the shows at La Zona Rosa, a Mexican restaurant with a bandstand in Austin, because they were so intimate. I just looked them up. They’re going to Jamaica, then touring the Southeast, and they’ll be in Sacramento, CA August 10th.
I saw them mid 80s at the Austin Opry House. Unbelievable show.

I love Waiting For Columbus and was at all their concerts at The Rainbow which form part of the LP. There's a fair bit of post-production and overdubbing/retakes on the finished product but it does show a great band at their peak. There's also a DVD available from this tour when the band played in Germany which is well worth checking out. Most of the show, (if not all) is available on RUclips. Tower of Power - the brass section on this tune - is another band you need to dive into - one of the tightest bands ever!

This is how Little Feat started their show as the pre-band before The Rolling Stones at Stuttgart in 1976. This album is what they played, promoted, and knocked outta the stadium. Stones were a show. Little Feat was an experience! I still have it too!

I first heard this band in 1975. My college roommate got Feats Don't Fail Me Now for Christmas. Next thing I knew local bands were doing their songs. And of course we picked up their other records. I was lucky enough to see them at a small venue in Charlotte shortly after Waiting for Columbus came out. Was devestated after Lowell George's death. Saw them again at the same venue on the Let It Roll tour. Still a great band
Their best studio album is Sailing Shoes! The best boogie beat country band!
That is a live album you should own. It's right up your alley. I bought it the first week it came out. Always had a copy of it in some format, since then. Richie Hayward is my favorite drummer of all.

When I was in highschool band we spontaneously broke out playing this at a football game in the stands. I rocked the bass line on a tuba! It was good fun!
Bill Payne had the "Dirtiest" Organ in Rock, This is the best band ever with the Tower of Power backing them up on this perhaps the greatest Feat song!
Little Feat is a New Orleans based band. You can hear it in the music.
For my money this album, Allman Brothers "Live at the Fillmore East" and "Frampton Comes Alive" are the best live recordings ever.

I saw them in small venue of about 2000. I was in the 10th row from the front on the floor. They were amazing. The Tower Power of Horns was with them. It was long ago.

But not the cut version.
Chod has already reacted to Dixie Chicken. It was that bastardized video version from either DK's Rock Concert or The Midnight Special. Not knowing who Little Feat are (were) Chod was more focused on the fact that Bonnie Raitt was relegated to background vocal duty (the sound mix was crap and Bonnie and Emmylou Harris's vocals were virtually none existent). He should hear the WFC Dixie Chicken/Tripe Face Boogie because he essentially missed hearing the music the first time.
@@MidwesternCornbilly Apologies; didn't know any of that - I am not keeping up here. Thank you for the info. In that same vein, I personally always try to listen to the studio track when I hear music that's new to me. Better sonic quality, better production quality, etc. Sometimes a live recording is better than the studio version, but not very often, in my experience. It's unfortunate he heard such a poor version of that great song.
Biff: No worries. His initial reaction was actually quite genuine. He had reacted to Bonnie Raitt before. He had now idea that at the time the show was taped was more than a decade before she would become the superstar that she is with the release of Nick of Time. In Chod's frame of reference Bonnie is music royalty and ...who the hell is Little Feat?. The many comments he received from that reaction went to great pains to explain the historical circumstances. It is great that he is finally dipping his toes into the very deep well that is Little Feat.

One of the greatest live albums ever, I had the opportunity to see them on the Waiting For Columbus tour, with Lowell, and as the openers The Fuller-Kaz Band, with Craig Fuller from Pure Prairie League on Vocals. He would take over for Lowell a couple of years later after Lowell passed, ironic. Amazing show, about twenty joints went flying up onto the stage during the song "Don't Bogart That Joint, My Friend". The crowd was ready.

Great, great Lp. Little Feat might be one of the most overlooked great bands of the 70s. So much talent that fused together to create a wonderful catalog of diverse musical genres.
Considered to be one of the best recorded albums - EVER - and I agree. Loved it when it came out - love it today. AND thank you for not stopping the music every 20 seconds to say something....you just listened and smiled and let the music do what it does.
I heard a definition of Little Feat which went, nobody's playing what you're hearing. Makes sense to me.

King Warbler, Dead Animal, Choctaw Wildfire, Black Red Black, Abram Shook -- just a few Austin bands with organ that I can think of off the top of my head.
You have now completed my holy trifecta, Allman Bros., Feat & Steely Dan. My era produced so many great bands, but these are my favorite three for all the reasons you have mentioned.
This was so great but my favorite song from this album is still Fat Man in the Bathtub… so good and funny too.

Sadly the bands founder, lead singer and master of slide guitar, Lowell George, Richie Hayward, one of the baddest second line drummers on the planet, and guitarist and singer, Paul Barrere are no longer with us. But they created a groove as deep as the Mariana Trench.

I'm sure everyone has already pointed out where that horn section came from: Tower of Power. I've heard quite a few other people cover this song and you just don't get quite the same effect without ToP.
Little Feat is always stacked for musical talent but the one thing that really gets buried a lot is just how much Paul Barrere is holding up the tent when Lowell gets all the notices.
