The Importance of Proper Fish Sizing
As a seasoned fish farmer, I've learned that one of the key factors in achieving success with catfish farming is the regular sizing of the fry. This process is crucial as it allows us to segregate the larger, faster-growing fish from the smaller ones. By doing so, we can ensure that the larger "shooter" fish don't end up consuming the smaller fry, which can significantly impact our overall yield.
In my experience, I've found that catfish fry can vary greatly in size, even within the same batch. This is why it's essential to take the time to carefully sort and separate the fish into different tanks or basins based on their size. The larger, more dominant fish are placed in one container, while the smaller, slower-growing individuals are housed separately. This approach helps to create a more balanced and harmonious environment, where each fish has the opportunity to thrive without being overpowered by its more aggressive counterparts.
The Art of Natural Catfish Breeding
Many aspiring fish farmers have asked me about the process of breeding catfish, and I'm always happy to share my knowledge. While there are several options available, such as hormone injections or artificial fertilization, I prefer to take a more natural approach.
In my operation, I simply place the mature, pregnant female catfish together with the male fish in a dedicated spawning tank. This allows the natural breeding process to occur, without the need for any invasive procedures. The key is to ensure that the female fish are truly ready to spawn, as this will greatly increase the chances of a successful breeding event.
One of the challenges with catfish breeding, however, is maintaining the fry population. It's not uncommon for the initial batch of 2,000 to 3,000 fry to dwindle down to just a few hundred within a matter of weeks. This is where the importance of regular sizing and segregation comes into play. By separating the faster-growing "shooters" from the smaller fry, we can help ensure that a greater number of the offspring survive and thrive.
The Contrasting Worlds of Catfish and Tilapia
While catfish farming requires a more hands-on approach, the breeding of tilapia is a much more straightforward process. Tilapia are known to be mouth brooders, meaning that the female fish will actually carry and protect their eggs and fry in their mouths until they are ready to be released.
This natural breeding behavior means that tilapia farmers don't need to worry about the same level of segregation and sizing that is required for catfish. The tilapia fry can simply be left to grow together, without the risk of being consumed by their larger siblings.
Another key difference is the market demand for these two fish species. Tilapia are highly sought-after in many regions, making them a lucrative crop for fish farmers. In contrast, catfish may require a more targeted marketing approach to ensure a steady demand for the product.
    Overcoming Obstacles and Embracing Resilience
As with any agricultural endeavor, fish farming is not without its challenges. Over the years, I've faced a variety of obstacles, from environmental issues like extreme heat to the unpredictable nature of natural disasters like typhoons. However, I've learned to approach these challenges with a resilient mindset, always striving to find solutions and adapt to the changing conditions.
One of the keys to my success has been the willingness to continuously learn and improve my practices. I'm constantly seeking out new information, experimenting with different techniques, and collaborating with other fish farmers and industry experts. By embracing a growth mindset, I've been able to overcome setbacks and stay ahead of the curve in an ever-evolving industry.
    Sharing Knowledge and Inspiring Others
As I've progressed in my fish farming journey, I've become increasingly passionate about sharing my knowledge and experiences with others. My goal is to not only inspire fellow fish farmers but also to contribute to the overall growth and development of the industry.
Through my RUclips channel and other outreach efforts, I've had the opportunity to connect with aspiring fish farmers from all walks of life. Whether it's providing detailed tutorials on breeding and fry management or offering insights into the business and marketing aspects of the industry, my aim is to empower others to achieve their own fish farming dreams.
I firmly believe that by working together, sharing our knowledge, and embracing innovation, we can create a more sustainable and prosperous future for the fish farming industry. It's a journey that I'm proud to be a part of, and I'm excited to see what the future holds as we continue to push the boundaries of what's possible.

Maker a safter that will allow the smaller fish to pass through leaving the biget fish. Easily separate them using the home made safter...

Hi Dexter, thanks very much for your good work. I have enjoyed watching your videos. I am a catfish producer in Nigeria and as you know, we all learn everyday. I would like to chip in a piece of advice. Why don't you buy a sorting basket, this will make your work more easier than using your hand which is so stressful.

Dexter you don’t need to Size Tilapia because they don’t eat each other , you only need to make sure they are not overcrowded and you can slow down their reproduction rate by adding Salt to the Water or by adding neem leaves
