Dr. Gregg Codelli: So nothing is perfect and, occasionally, implants will ail or fail. Unfortunately, in most cases, most patients are not aware if there is an issue with a potential problem. That’s why I recommend following our patients for three to five years after care is complete. What we’re checking for is making sure they're brushing and flossing and keeping the implant clean, making sure the rest of the dental wellbeing is in good shape, making sure the bite hasn’t changed where an implant can be potentially overloaded. If there are symptoms with the failing implant, it might include bleeding or tender gum in the area of the implant or there might be soreness when biting down, or more ominously, things might seem loose. If an implant is loose and this problem is not addressed, and the patient is not taking care of an implant, this will jeopardize the health of the implant. And the implant can be lost.
Treatment of peri-implantitis falls well within the domain of a periodontal specialist because the treatment is similar to treatment of periodontal disease which is a process that occurs around natural teeth. Our first line of treatment in treating failing or ailing implants is the use of laser technology to decontaminate the surface of the implant and improve the area around the neck of the implant so that the patient’s home care efforts are more effective. Here in our practice, we routinely use lasers to address ailing or failing implants. We also provide the ongoing prevention follow-up for the life of the implant.
