Commentary: Reboot was created by Gavin Blair, Ian Pearson, Phil Mitchell, and John Grace. Gavin Blair and Ian Pearson were the people who made the music video for "Money For Nothing" by Dire Straits. This scene was made because they got sick and tired of being recognized for making the Dire Straits music video.
It has taken me 25 years to get this joke. Besides being probably one of the best episodes in the entire series, I was five when I saw this and I had no idea what was going on. Two and a half decades later, I actually know who the Knopfler brothers are, I heard that riff, and immediately knew wtf was going on tl:dr laid low for 25 years well played quebecers
Yeah, that's the problem with using uncanny animation, models and textures. The music video had the benefit of being so low poly that it still looks alright by today's standards.
Ummmmmm I doubt you guys know but the guys that did the music video for Money for nothing ARE the same guys that made Reboot. They just got sick of being known as "Those guys who did Money for Nothing."
The animation in Money for nothin may be horribly outdated today but at least it's not painful to look at like the weird glossy reboot designs. The characters are at least still pleasant to look at pictures of but the reboot characters are already weird from just staring at stills of them . Also the almost money for nothing riff playing in the background is the best part of this joke, best part.
Yeah, 90s cgi sure loved to make everything super glossy and chromatic, especially after Terminator 2. Except in Terminator it actually made sense since the T1000 is made of a metalic liquid similar to that of Mercury or Gallium. Just makes the first Toy Story all the more impressive with how well the cgi held up (aside from the humans and the dog).
Because Ian Pearson and Gavin Blair are the two creators of ReBoot, and also created the music video for Money for Nothing. They were known as "those guys who created the Money for Nothing" music video. They were not fans of being known for only that.
@@Killua2001 Well, considering the song the music video was tied to, also had a line that's aged worse than the 3D animation, which literally has the derogatory slur for gay people in it, I'd say I can't blame them for wanting to distance themselves from that music video.
@@retrogamelover2012 In defense of Dire Straits, the slur had a purpose to be in there. The "narrator" of Money For Nothing was based on a conservative appliance store employee Mark Knopfler met in NYC who was watching MTV on the store's TV sets and making derogatory remarks about the musicians he saw performing, some of which made their way into the song's lyrics. The song isn't commending the narrator's homophobia; it's condemning him as--in the words of Knopfler--"a real ignoramus" who represented what Knopfler saw as everything wrong with the rock fanbase of the 80s, which the song is satirizing.
Fitting, if that's the case, given the derogatory slur for gay people, that the Dire Straits song originally had, that basically aged worse than the 3D animation at that time.
@@Sumschmuck Pretty much. Then again, given the song was about an ignoramus (as Mark Knopfler described) in some department store rambling about how "easy" the guys on MTV have, I guess you could say the portly guy was that same ignoramus.
