It seemed among the most unlikely to resurface, as home recordings were extremely rare, and Sesame Street Workshop seemed adamant on keeping it locked away forever. Now that I can watch it for myself, it feels so strange, but in a good way.
I personally am frustrated that folks are trying to get the Sesame Street episode taken down; I feel like it’s extremely selfish to gatekeep media, especially when it was created to educate impoverished children. Like I really think it’s time we asked ourselves, what’s more important? Someone’s self proclaimed entitlement toward gatekeeping, or the distribution of knowledge and art? I would argue that people who are trying to make sure there are ways for the public to access the episode are doing the right thing, because the more people can access it, the less likely it will become totally lost.
The people who gatekeep don't really give a shit about preservation. Personally, I hope this episode gets posted literally everywhere to the point it becomes impossible for them to take it all down. Fuck these people.
Easy solution, if the creators don't want it up online for free for legal reasons then they can put it out online on an existing streaming service or some existing platform for a few bucks with a quick content warning. Super easy fix. Even if they take the actual stolen rip and put that up publically, I'd still say they're in the right as long as it's accessible. They'd get tons of money, tons of publicity, a lot of renewed interest in the series, and all they'd have to do is shove in 5 seconds of warning text saying something like "The following episode has been banned for intense and frightening content, viewer discretion is advised." That would solve any complaints and cost basically nothing to do.
Popping onto the wiki yesterday and finding out the wicked witch episode was found was a thrill. I legitimately started clapping and freaking out lol. What a find for the community, man.
Godspeeds first album being rereleased online, then the Duke Nukem Forever 2001 build being leaked, the lost Jeopardy pilot being found, and now the Wicked Witch episode of Sesame Street finding it's way online? This year has been insane for lost media.
At the rate things are going, we'll have the long-lost Tokyo Toy Show build of Sonic the Hedgehog, considered to be one of the bona fide holy grails of video game prototypes, before the end of the year.
Is there a word for the eerie feeling that comes along with the thought of all the media out there that is forever lost? It's a sort of haunting feeling of how temporary everything is
That Margaret Hamilton one is probably the find of the year. I read somewhere that Hamilton was really upset that she scared so many kids with her portrayal of the witch, so it’s good that we can admire her work in a new way
Moments like these are why I'm thankful for third-party RUclips downloaders and uTorrent. I was able to snatch up copies of the Jeopardy pilot, the Sesame Street episode, and Quantum Quest before they got taken back down. Now I don't have to miss them ever again!
There is a 1954 Kenya Boy film by Daiei, which hasn’t been available in Japan for decades, but that’s mostly due to legal reasons. It doesn’t help that its truer to the text (and just as weird) animated remake by Toei Animation seems to be more popular in certain countries (including Sweden and Greece) rather than in Japan, because when it was first released there, it bombed hard and got devoured by the huge national success of an anime film based on Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicäa manga, much to the surprise of both critics and audiences alike. Also not helping is that both are adapted from an old graphic novel series which hasn’t long been translated into English, but was fair for its day.
@@hcbs1986 I got it from someone on RUclips who had uploaded it to Google Drive. Check for that, and if you can't find it, I'll reupload it this evening after I get home.
When you think about it, a lot of lost media is found in unofficially and without permission of the creators. Any time something is found through a taping of its airing, it is technically unauthorized.
Yeah, but most people aren't dicks about it to the point of taking it down, unless it's something that obviously shouldn't be leaked like the Christine Chubbuck tape. Most people don't really care when media like this gets posted online. Hell, the Scream TV series YT channel recently released the "Click Skip and Die" YT ad that had offended everyone back in the day; a lot of (ex) employees are happy to cooperate with these searches. In the case of the Sesame Street episode, these guys are just being assholes and were gatekeeping only because they could. Fuck them.
I think the fact that there's any controversy that something was "stolen" from somewhere that held it hostage solely for copyright reasons is really stupid. Copyright is one of the most abused and downright terrible systems ever invented by humanity, and it actively gets in the way of media preservation. The fact that it was "stolen" is based, actually, and I hope that happens more often to organisations who refuse to cooperate. Fuck em.

It's on the internet, the damage is already done so to speak. Especially with something as high profile as this. Thousands will have ripped the file and saved it onto storage devices and it will constantly be re-uploaded everywhere no matter how much they will try to take it down.
When it come to people ripping VHS recordings, I wish everyone understood interlacing and the full 60fps of a live event. There are people that rip recordings and simply not care about quality and everyone that was born in the last generation believes the recordings look like this from the time they were recorded. It's like distorting history in a way.
yeah, a lot of old media is only available at a blurry 480p 30fps because the person who owned them didnt knew anything about interlacing and the bad youtube compression
Honestly, knowingly keeping a piece of media history lost is just straight up selfish and the museum being mad the data got stolen and leaked is well deserved. You can't tell me nobody working for the museum didn't know the episode was lost. If Sesame Street themselves wanted to keep it under wraps, fine. But they gave the episode to a museum for viewing. Stealing a piece of media from a museum database isn't exactly the same thing as stealing the authentic Mona Lisa.

I just downloaded the episode just in case it gets taken down. I plan to throw it on internet archives and keep a back up copy of the Witch episode of Seasme Street. It deserves to be kept and preserved forever not just held in some private collection.
I can say this with absolute conviction: Letting history be lost to time is a far greater sin than breaching the intellectual property rights of its negligent owners. Private entities with exclusive access cannot be trusted with preserving history.
Honestly. If I had the rights to this thing I would have released it as soon as I knew it was lost. Fuck these hoarders, I'm glad they're pissy about it, this was well-deserved.
I love these videos even more than videos on stuff that's currently lost. I still don't see how this was scary. I tried my best to put myself in the shoes of a kid, but when I watched the episode all I can imagine is how bored I would be at how awkward the dialogue was and just slightly uncomfortable due to all the yelling in the episode. But that's about it. I grew up with the original OZ as a seven year old and was never terrified of the witch, so maybe that's why it doesn't make any sense of it being banned to me. Don't get me wrong though, I agree it lived up to the hype. It was very fascinating and fun.
You have to keep in mind that the Witch is a threatening, malicious entity who has the power to turn people into inanimate objects and appear right next to her victims at any time with no warning. The fear would have come from the feeling of being powerless against this evil, inescapable figure who constantly shows up out of nowhere to torment you. Additionally, you have the weird sound effects, the visual effects (red smoke and the electric shock filter), the part where she's in a bit of a screaming match with the owners of the diner (young children generally don't respond well to adults getting into heated arguments), and the fact that she comes back at the end, implying that the characters had to suffer through that whole fiasco yet again.
Fun fact I was in a summer volunteering program at the Kentucky Science center around the time that Quantum Quest was being shown. So I did actually get to see part of it.

yoooo I was the one who made the original Lost Media page for the 1982 Macy's Parade, and to have it finally found after 40 years is definitely a highlight of 2022 for me. Game shows are hard, because they're often not considered worth releasing on DVD or any archive sites. I'm a Dana Hill fan and her appearances on To Tell the Truth are some of the more interesting appearances of her later live-action work.
Also, what was probably the golden age for game shows was also the golden age for wiping tapes, so a lot of them are just not in existence anymore. Or in the East River in NYC.
I really don't understand why Sesame Workshop didn't officially release the episode online themselves; it wouldn't have been leaked illegally if they had done so. I hate when companies and private entities hoard lost media and prevent the public from seeing it; I bet some private collector has all the lost Doctor Who episodes in his attic.
I love and adore the Gibb brothers. I've got to correct a fact- Andy wasn't officially part of The Bee Gees, actually. He performed alongside them and they wrote music together, and they were even going to include him in the band, But I think his addiction issues had gotten too overwhelming to make it work. Andy Gibb was as talented as the rest of the brothers, and I'm just so happy this got archived properly! I think that he should've had a way bigger career than he did.
10000% agreed.
Popping onto the wiki yesterday and finding out the wicked witch episode was found was a thrill. I legitimately started clapping and freaking out lol. What a find for the community, man.

You mind uploading Jeopardy or smthin? I’m pretty sure that pilot is lost
Even more likely, they’re found without the permission of corporations.
@@SlapstickGenius23 I mean do they even remember the material anymore
Yeah, but most people aren't dicks about it to the point of taking it down, unless it's something that obviously shouldn't be leaked like the Christine Chubbuck tape. Most people don't really care when media like this gets posted online. Hell, the Scream TV series YT channel recently released the "Click Skip and Die" YT ad that had offended everyone back in the day; a lot of (ex) employees are happy to cooperate with these searches.
In the case of the Sesame Street episode, these guys are just being assholes and were gatekeeping only because they could. Fuck them.
Its still weird to see Big Bird, Big Bird of all characters, standing out of the dinner with a bat and stick ready to throw down against the witch

I think the fact that there's any controversy that something was "stolen" from somewhere that held it hostage solely for copyright reasons is really stupid. I remember hearing about the Wicked Witch thing years ago. My dad used to watch Sesame Street in the early 80’s until he saw Sesame Street on Ice. He wasn’t born to see the wicked witch one. He thought the puppets were real creatures.
The Sesame Street find is nothing short of amazing. My cousin and I are both into lost media and have honestly kept checking for news of this particular episode for a while now since we first heard about it when we were younger (18 and 23 now). After always coming up short, so glad that it's resurfaced, and that the quality is as good as it is. Now I can finally give her some good news about this and we can finally watch it before RUclips is sure to step in and take it down.

I WILL be putting a copy of it on the internet archive as well.

When it come to people ripping VHS recordings, I wish everyone understood interlacing and the full 60fps of a live event.
I'm just so glad that Quantum Quest was found... I'm just a big Hayden Christensen fan so I'm glad that his role hasn't been lost.

I’ve always wanted the leaked version of the cleveland show pilot to be found, since it has numerous differences from the aired version, and it should be easy to find, since it’s completely gone from the internet, but should be on people’s hard drives, but of course I know no one’s gonna care about this

Andy gibb was not a member of the bee gees. he was the younger brother of them. the bee gees did sing backup on most of his songs though.
Something that wasn't big enough to even get onto the lost media wiki that happened in the LM space recently btw is the start of a small search party for MySims Puzzle Party (a lot of info about the game is on the MySims Wiki btw)
yoooo I was the one who made the original Lost Media page for the 1982 Macy's Parade, and to have it finally found after 40 years is definitely a highlight of 2022 for me.
Also, from my understanding the original recording had all of the commercials, so I'd love to get in contact with the uploader and see if they could share with me the complete recording, commercials included, so I could finally fill a hole in my collection.

I do remember seeing both the Macy parade and the lost sesame street episode being found in two separate news articles
I get why they would take it down, but I don't think children are going to watch a almost 50 year old episode of a children's shows.

I've got to correct a fact-
Andy wasn't officially part of The Bee Gees, actually.
I think clips of him on American tv are hard to come by.
