Man, I was worried you were going to break the pipe seals on the other joints removing the base plates. You needed someone with a pipe wrench to provide an opposite but equal force to prevent stress on other pipe joints but you got the job done successfully!👍

Good job of changing out the circulator pump. Replacing those bolt flanges with the new screw-on couplings will make things a lot easier for you if you ever have to change the pump again in the future. Fine idea about making the new pump a plug-in for generator power if/when needed!

Thanks Monte, I am sure with modern things the way they are that pump will not last like the last one did. We have to many power cuts for me to know I will need that plug before the winter is finished. Have and great New Year.

Generator is good, but for additional redundancy I would drop in some sort of ups or inverter, it won’t take long for that boiler to overheat without circulation in power outage condition. Wouldn’t harm to have a filter on return line in front of pump, it’s ceramic bearings are really sensitive to dirt. Also, once or twice a year it’s generally a good idea to cycle through all valves to keep them seize free, and to just make sure they are still working.

That is the definition of bravery, setting into that in the cold weather. I realize the condition of that pump made it essential. 10 years ago my furnace failed in Feb and the part was going to be 7 days in coming during a week of -20 F in northern Vermont. I kept the house tepid with a pellet stove and an ashley wood heater. You do what you have to do. I like the idea of the pump connection for running by generator.

I live alone and In my 70's now and heated with wood all my life so I know what it's like to rig up what we have to make the best of it. Thanks for sharing. Rigged up heating system failure in December isn't an option.

Good morning Simon. Glad you got lucky on the pump swap. My luck I would have had trouble from the get go with the shut off valve especially that it's never been shut off.
I don't know how many valves that have been open for years and when I've shut them off they want to leak.
You had some major pressure on the lines especially when Removing the bottom flat plate. I would have been paranoid and probably would have put a ratchet strap or something for a backup. It's done now and glad it went smoothly.
I hope that you and Sara had a great Christmas. Get some coffee and enjoy your day. I hope it's a productive day.
I appreciate you sharing. Often wonder what might you be into at the current moment. Have a blessed day my friend. Be safe and we'll see you down the road......

They stop after a few weeks and seal themselves up with the sealant I have to run in the system. Always a productive day and thanks for your support for another year. Y'll enjot the New Year. Best wishes my friend.

You can bleed air from the pump by slackening the large screw head at the front of the pump, the air will bleed out turning to a stream , then tighten, no need to fully remove the screw.

when lighting the fire, so you get abit less smoke inside, you could put a chimney venturi, this can be powered by a blowing vacuum for only a couple minutes and sit in the chimney itself, as you only need a small jet of air in there you dont need a huge nozzle and no portion of the vacuum cleaner goes inside the chimney or any moving parts, just the airflow created, to help exhaust smoke out faster

Hi! I have the almost the same tipe of Viadrus from 2013. It working like new. I use 2 Grundfos pumps in paralel. 1 it is working 80%of time and the other stay closed with a tap closed. I open the tap at the second pump only when it's need. 3 speed Grundfos pumps. On maximul speed has 90W. I use a UPS from a PC with a car battery 12v 60Ah. When the curent drop, i tested 9 hours on batery. This tipe of UPS from PC, do not have sinusoidal wave. Has 220v with square wave. The pump working perfect, only make the sound a litle stronger and it trasmiting the sound thru copper pipes but not noticeble in the house. After 10 years of use, i change the UPS to a Eaton Powerware PW5115 who is working on 24v. I buy 2 new car batteries 12v 50Ah cheap ones. This UPS has a sinusoidal wawe and pumps work like on grid. Last batery was working on 50% after 10 years.
I think it is a good option for you. You don't have to go down to change the plug. It is working automatical. All time throu UPS. Power go down, the pump will not stop. A generator need maintenance, oil, fuel, start it, stop it, smoke. A car batery wil resist 10 years because will not be in a car. Will stay down without 10000000 stres moving, without shakes.
When I make fire, I put 2 biger wood left, right, in the midle wood chips and fill with biger wood till full. Close the up dor and start the fire from down dor. No smoke in the boiler room.
I made all sanitary installation of heat and hot water. I use only pump on the return pipe. I do not use a bypas pump. I connect a plate heat exchanger from a old gas boiler betwin turn and return. Take gown 10-15°C from Turn raising the same amount on the return when i start the fire for the first times. I do not loose the preasure on Turn. I have 10 aluminium radiators average 100cm in 3 diferent directions on T connections and all are hot.
    Hope help you this informations.
    Happy new year!

In the U.S. we call pipe dope Ackempucky, but I’ve never heard of using horse hair. Although I have seen some kind of fiber in a roll but not Teflon tape. I hope you don’t have any problems with the new system. I like the way the old pump came in cast iron with flanges. Sometimes new isn’t made nearly as good as old but you needed a pump and that’s what they offer. Here in Florida we don’t have to depend on a system to heat our houses, so that’s a no joking matter. Again stay warm and enjoy your New Year Winter. I’m not kidding, I was worried you and the chickens would be swimming in the basement. Always watching from Panama City Florida,USA. 🇺🇸🦅 ! Not sure what you were on about. There is another gate valve not a meter up the pipe from the valve you say is the only valve between the pump and the rest of the house.

    • @arctic-rebel
      @arctic-rebel  10 дней назад +1

The 3" flow pipe you are referring to splits into 4 3" pipe as it hits the horizontal pipes which then flow left and right. There are two valves to the left which is the ones you can see. These were installed in 1948 and no longer function. The two 3" pipe that travel right then split into 4 3" pipes two of which turn vertical and go up 3 stories an have no valves connecting to each floor as they go. The two 3" pipes that continue right also have the same huge screw valves that you could see to the left but again have not been used since install in 1948. So what I am on about is 9000 liters of water that can openly drain into a boiler room with no drain within just a few minuets and they is not container big enough or no help to be able to prevent it. The other fact you may have missed is it is not a house, thus the huge old system that holds way more coolant than a dozen houses. I hope this helps. Happy New Year and Thank you
