    The polkadots were my first exposure to Dusty, maybe it’s just because I was only 7 or 8 years old but I thought he was great. But my favorite Dusty memories are from when he started doing commentary for WCW, he brought all his usual energy and charisma but leaned into the silliness of his WWF character. Calls like “HE GOT A TRITHYCLE!!!” are iconic of course, but what always got me was him spouting nonsense words for moves or parts of the body like “blevit” and “belliwhock.” I also love the times when something happening in a match is so goofy that Dusty just starts cackling like Haku watching the Shockmaster’s debut.

    For what it’s worth, my introduction to Dusty was during his Polka Dots day’s. As a kid I liked him and Sapphire. It was interesting to see Hogan and Macho and guy’s like that on one end of things and Dusty and Sapphire on the other. Side note, on one of the Ric Flair DVD sets they put out awhile back they had a match between Flair and Dusty (in the NWA days). I’m not sure on the date, but it was at The Greensboro Coliseum. So I was watching with my Dad and we both, at pretty much the same time, pointed out a fan you can hear, throughout the entire match, yelling “DUSTY RHODES! WOO WOO WOOOO”. Both my Dad and I laughed about this fan all through the match and to this day when we hear his name we both yell “DUSTY RHODES WOO WOO WOOOO!” A fun memory that I’ve been able to share with my Dad. Dusty's polka dots are so iconic that Dustin embraced them (not as Dustydust in 1998, mind) as part of his Goldust facepaint and getup on his later WWE career; as well as Tommy Dreamer.
    The Bionic Elbow too, both Dreamer and Bubba Ray Dudley have used it (theatrics and all) as a signature move.

    Vince tried his best to embarrass and humiliate Dusty with the Common Man gimmick, but Dusty's natural charisma, charm, and ability to connect with fans made him get over immensely. RIP, AMERICAN DREAM!

    How crazy is Big Dust’s charisma that he got the polka dots over? And it was no wonder one of his first house show feuds was jobbing out Akeem across the country.

    • @johnepants
      @johnepants 3 месяца назад +2

      Right. He didn’t start getting buried until I think it became clear he wasn’t re-upping with Vince. Other than that, he was booked strong even with the odd gimmick and was even given the opportunity to main event house shows in 1989. He and Boss Man headlined a few B-shows at the time. He was in that upper mid-card realm for his entire run

    This one is special to me. November 1989 is when I got into WWF. The first wrestler I saw on TV was Dusty Rhodes wearing the Boss Man’s hat and leading his team at the Survivor Series. Crazy that 35 years later I’m watching his son.

    Crazy to think Jon Moxley was the last person ever to take the Bionic Elbow, a man himself considered rather ordinary and "just a guy" compared to Reigns and Rollins yet carved his own path through his own unique style.
