The PC version is definitely superior, I agree. You get access to a huge swath of plugins, and MV outputs HTML / JavaScript files that can be used on virtually any platform - and from what I've researched, yes there are HTML5 development tools for the Switch if you register as a developer with Nintendo. RPG Maker in my opinion is very much a set of development tools and game engine, and in the gaming industry it's pretty standard to develop games on the PC (or Mac) and test them on the console. I would much rather they add native deployment options to the PC version, especially since you can sell your games if you develop using the PC version, which I don't believe is an option on their console releases.
One thing the console version of RPG Maker really needs is a sprite editor not the hardest thing to implement as it would at least negate the lack of being able to import assets. Depending on the dlc released in future though and how varied it is that might stop all games from looking generic which is always my concern with software like this on consoles. That said it is good for teaching game logic and being able to build a world so that is a positive for people learning.
@@SwitchUpYt I think they'll avoid doing that because it would enable people to create copyrighted characters, and open up a huge can of legal worms that nobody wants to deal with. Ohh, no, the memories are rushing back to me... I spent countless hours with RPG Maker 2000, a friend and I were planning a big adventure where 2 good friends were living together in a house in a forest, one is a fighter, one is a potion/poison maker with a lizard on his shoulder (which was sometimes a chameleon, we didn't decide which one is that). The house was really well detailed. One day you were wondering into the town to get some supplies, meet up with some hot elf chich who were kidnapped right after and you set out on a journey to save the elf girls. The idea was just to roam around the world, the elf girls were more like a macguffin, it was planned that this kicks off the adventure but the series of events will nothing to do with the girls and in the end they somehow eventually save the girls as sort of a joke ending that ties back to the beginning. We didn't go too far... But we had big idea. I did some small - really short - adventures, one of them had a twist, instead of the regular hero characters and portraits I used the monsters as the playable character, you had to control a grimm reaper, death himself. The story started with Death arriving home after a job and had to report to the Devil and immediately get another assignement, he had to go to a church close by to kill a priest and a nun. When you visited the church, the priest and the nun turned into demons and you had to kill them in demon form. The game was called "A hard day of Death" or something like that :) It was fun turning the RPG roles onto their heads. The best part of all this was that there were different tools to help you with tile sets and character animations. You still had to draw everything but the palette of the image files were handled pretty well and you could set up frames as to test how the animation would look in the game, like a walk cycle, or a door opening. I loved building stuff in the editior but I had equal fun drawing my own art. I made a short section of Cowboy Bebop too, I drew the characters and the interior of their ship. But this leads to a bitter memory... I made a really-really detailed section of the first Silent Hill, the first time you visit the hospital. All the stuff, like the entrance, working elevator, doors that were locked from one side that you could open from the other, I put inside !A LOT! of custom made graphics, cut out music and sound effects from the original game, the whole hospital level was playable, I maybe made some monsters too, like the infected doctor. And one day my Win98 crashed and I had to reinstall it. Important files were stored on the D drive but RPG Maker and the projects were stored on the C drive under Program Files. And as I was deleting files in DOS to prepare the Win98 reinstall I saw the files getting deleted under RPG Maker forward slash Projects... I was devastated. Hello I bought this game and I'm struggling with deleting the starting party for switch. I know to go to the system database and click on party but there is no delete button on switch?
@@azfadeza623 . I am planning to buy it, I have already the complete script of my game and everything, I have the VX Ace version in my PC, but I was planning to make this on my Swtich as it is portable, and I liked that and more comfortable (?). Do you recommend the MV version on Switch? Also, can I have 5 party members in battle? Or it is limited to only 4?
I always wanted to try this series out and my only experience was with the 3ds version and that was because I used it as a means to acess homebrew on it. There was an exploit where you downloaded a certain level and you could access the homebrew menu. I think it has since been fixea so new people can't use it anymore. I primarily used it to backup my game saves.
I’d be interested to learn how deep does the gameplay side go - does it have a scripting language and can you come up with custom battle mechanics,, attributes, items, etc? I’ve never used any RPGMaker but have always been fascinated by the concept.
As a guy who tweeked over RPG maker MV 2 years ago, it's been long over due to the point where RPG maker devs probably won't bother getting this. Because there's the new RPG maker MZ, which is the MV that we really deserve, and we want custom plugins, sprites, and assets to be applied and programmed in our game.
I have been anxiously hoping to hear positive things about this. I’m excited that you had positive things to say. I can’t wait to get my copy and start making cute adventures
It's funny, in so many ways, this is a vast improvement over FES. Allowing for a third-person view during combat, giving players more file space to work with and a lot more than just human sprites for party members is great. (Not to mention the ability to make custom character sprites) Not to mention it's a lot easier to figure out as not only are the options a bit more clear, but the game even explains what they do. Granted, I did kinda forget how switches worked at first, but all I had to do was look at one of my events in FES to remember how that worked. Honestly, any complaint I do have is a nitpick, like how the new character sprites only get one facial expression that you can use for a conversation. (Well, okay, not having combat sprites for monsters if you decide you want to have one on your team is pretty disappointing too. I was gonna have a Kappa join my party, too) I have also noticed that unlike in FES, copying and pasting an event with a switch added to it seems to prevent you from advancing forward, and here I thought I could use the same shortcut for physical encounters that I used in the former. Honestly, the only majorly bad thing I've dealt with is something that's probably exclusive to me and maybe a few others, but for some reason, the game glitched out on me after my first hour spent in Editor. Not only did the game automatically shut itself down, but it started up the tutorial again and even deleted all of the data I had saved. Thankfully, it only did that once, but yeah, I guess my biggest recommendation for newcomers is to restart the game after finishing the tutorial. Unlike most Switch games that have a tendency to automatically shut down if they're on for a certain amount of time, this one only did it to me the one time. And thank god for that. I do not want a reason to return this.
I had gotten RPG Maker for the switch a while ago and while I was trying to make a game I decided to go play other people's Creations on it when I noticed that a lot of words were censored. I commented to the Creator one of the games and they told me that there's some weird type of restrictions on the console versions. I know certain words would be censored because what actually happened the games you make would be for everybody to play, but there are words that ended up getting censored due to their placement in the sentence. I decided to give up on making a game after that. It takes enjoyment out of creating a game with that kind of weird restrictions.
Rpg maker is on sale currently 50% off I'm currently playing the 3ds version and even though I know no one is every going to play my level i absolutely love to tweak stuff and learn how everything works
Trying to figure out how make variables kinda sucks this early. You can't manually type variables out like on PC, and they're aren't tutorials or manuals for it yet.
4:38 minor nitpick: that graphics style is not "isometric". In an isometric view, you can see all three sides of a cube, with the X and Z axis having a 30 degree angle (Rollercoaster Tycoon, Transport Tycoon, etc.) Otherwise great video!
SwitchUp thanks for explaining in a way that makes what should seem really daunting pretty basic and easy. I’d love to see your RPG it’s more fleshed out, is there an online component to play other people’s levels? Or it’s just your RPG only
Ha ha never mind the video answered that for me right at the end before worth playing! Yes you can upload it. So if you’re interested in just playing other people’s RPGs (like just playing levels in Mario maker) you can! Very nice.
I wanted to get this because it seemed like a good rpg maker game for beginners. Because the first rpg maker I ever used sucked at explaining what all the functions and tools did and it didn’t give any kind of tutorials.
I feel like something good that comes out of the switch version compared to the PC version is that is seems less daunting to get your games out there for people to find and play. I find it to be harder to get games out there for people to play when I work on games in PC, but the switch makes it simple and easy. I’m not sure if it’s the same for previous console versions, but i think it’s nice. I’m considering getting just for the hell of it
It's not expensive. It is a program tool so selling it at a normal game price is rare. The game costs $30 more on PC. Fuze4 and SmileBasic4 are stronger programs, lower priced, and come with assets as well, but you have to do more work to use them as they are more pure programming. However, RPG Maker MV is supposed to have Java programming so I have to wonder if you missed it or it was removed.
What i'd love to know is...if I buy this for the PC, then use tons of custom content including different music etc...could you then upload that and play it on the switch? or would Nintendo or someone else flag it and get it taken down because it has different content than the original game?
A little late in the game for me viewing this but I’ll say this; I think even if you didn’t want to make, the idea of playing other people’s home brew rpgs is a big appeal with the fact there must be tons available now.
Brought on the 3ds and switch for very cheep. I really want to be a video game designer and this will be so good to get my feet wet. I always wanted to make a game. It's been hunting me ever since I was a teen. Now I'm going to let my creativity got wild with this. I'll surely be uploading my game for everyone to see. It will be a demo first then a full game once I get some feed back but that will be for a while. I haven't gotten the game just yet still waiting for it to come to the mail. Once it come in I'm diving deep 😎👍🏼. I'll let you guys know how it's going and keep people updated on it too. Thanks for this video
I learned while downloading Minecraft resource packs that Switch has a 2 GB limit for save files. I wonder how quickly that may or may not come into play with this.
I've heard that players in Japan have discovered a way to utilize ATB in MV Switch port through common events. There's even instructions on how to use it on Google. However, it is written in Japanese and no one has translated it yet. But it goes to show that the console port might be capable of doing things the PC plugins can... Hm.
I have it on my switch but I don’t know how to make my own rpgs but I’ve tried looking it up but it doesn’t give me any info so if you know how to do that PLEASE TELL ME
If you get this on switch you need a mouse and keyboard it helps when you are working on your adventure at home ,the touch screen does the job on the go just fine
For casuals, all this game will be used for is to download other people's games, since it takes a collossal amount of time to create a good RPG. Can people rate other people's RPGs?
Is it possible to overhaul the combat engine natively? I have an idea for an action RPG but the turn based combat of RPG Maker means it's the first thing I'd need to completely replace.
I’m 14 and want to make something like a vn or a small rpg when I grow up. I don’t know the first thing about computers let alone learning to code. Would this still be ok to try? Since I don’t have a job I’m really concerned if I don’t like it but I’m really interested in making some type of story based game. Is it worth the price for someone without experience? I don’t know a place I can learn rn and my laptop isn’t very good so maybe this could be a start?
I understand that this could be said about any game with player enabled content creation, but I've always been confused when I saw this in the coming soon section of the eShop and then after finding out it's been on multiple consoles in the past. Wouldn't the PC version offer hundreds of thousands more levels of creativity through importing your own assets? (or even changing code yourself to make something unique happen you otherwise couldn't do with the base code and let me say I have barely any knowledge of coding.)
@@SwitchUpYt What a response 😂, cheers to that friend. 🍻 Although this is 60$, where as Fortnite is free, plus the RPG Maker MV toolset is a bit advanced in getting to grips. With that being said, I hope younger players take to it! You made me remember how much I would have loved this game as a kid. To be able to create my own game, even if I never finished it.✨
This is great! Time to make a sequel and a definitive addition to my FES title: Dragon Knight: A Charming Adventure. Hopefully I can customize the battle style and not just completely repurpose it like on the 3ds.
I used a older iteration of this series, rpg maker for the ps1, loved it, but newer versions seemed to drop the sprite maker, where you could create you own vision of characters, complete with various moving/actions animations, lamented that decision ever since. Most of my stories have characters that look a VERY distinctive way, sometimes for plot purposes, so it was lost to the 'heres a generic 'character' we've animated for you' bad design. I loved making my own characters, I was like Sebastian from Blade Runner, I make friends! These are my friends, I make them! scene. d>_0b
It's weird to know that RPG Maker actually had this feature in the past. If you can handle using Fuze4 or SmileBasic4 on Nintendo Switch, they would be better choices as you can make sprites and compose music and they are flexible engines.
This is good stuff keep it up. Not a game for me but your style has me re watching a lot of your vids and reducing my inclination to watch ign nintendo content
i remember playing the rpg maker in ps1. I love the pre made game named gobli. i remember me and my friends attempted to make a game but sadly our short attention spanned brain prevented us to finish the game. im gonna buy this and will finish the said game.
Could someone tell me if this game is only to make turn based combat or could you make some thing that allows you to attack overworld enemies (like the old Zeldas). Would love to see similar design programs being made with other genres in mind too. Would love a Platformer maker or a fighting game maker. That would be sweet.
Dude I spent ALL of my life playing RPG Maker 2000 for years back in the day and I would have kept up with it if I ever would have thought something like Stardew Valley would grow to the popularity it did. At the time, 3D games were evolving and 2D was just old and outdated. I never would have dreamed that would be seeing an abundance of pixel art games that are accepted by society like this. I love it and I’m really glad. So yeah this one brings back some great memories! It’s actually fairly similar. I would SOOO jump on this but sorry it would just engulf my entire life lol.
game.dreamers Yeah that really sucks but at the same time it levels the playing field I guess and keeps it simple. Leave it to Switch to oversimplify lol. For better or worse
Can stuff you make be imported out of rpg maker? Like could I export it and edit it on a pc version of RPG maker? Or are the games you make locked into its little library and only other people who also have access to that library can play? These seem like key questions in a title like this where you will sink so much time. You want to be able to freely distribute your creation once it’s finished.
Having it on PC gives more access to modding and importing other files. Having it on console gives you a narrowed scope to work in (that can be a good thing) and a player base. RPG Maker Fes on the 3DS had a lot of problems, but I still loved it. I got a PC version and didn't like it as much. People will expect you to have your own art--that's better if you can do it, but not so great if you lack that skill.

@@ThoughtyTheWrangler Band of Monsters writing was kinda bad but so nostalgic at the same time. The mindless wondering around and having over leveled monsters at the first boss. Those were the days of Kemco but now I legitimately have no idea what's new with them
Game Devolopment 101: Its a lot of work.
Hello I bought this game and I'm struggling with deleting the starting party for switch. I know to go to the system database and click on party but there is no delete button on switch?
Hey man, thanks for mentioning RPG Playground 👍
Oh man I love it! Didn't expect to see you guys here! Mark
Can you import custom tilesets?
The Ps4 Version has a free Starter Set DLC. Does the Switch version have this as well?
There’s a DLC category - but it was empty when I looked. I will check it again! Mark
@@SwitchUpYt Thanks, I appreciate it!
So, does it, or not?
@@SeventhheavenDK No, unfortunately. I already bought it for Switch.
Great review guys, I’m sold on this game now. I’ve a total newbie at this, but I’m determined to make something - wish me luck!
Can this be used with a stylus by switching to stylus mode in the switch settings? Because that would make it easier
So is it possible to add tiles or something? I wonder how limited it feels...
Oh man I’ve been waiting on this review!
Let me know what you think of the game mate! Mark
SwitchUp it looks cool but very intimidating! But I’ll download the free level maker and give the SwitchUp game a shot!
4:38 minor nitpick: that graphics style is not "isometric". In an isometric view, you can see all three sides of a cube, with the X and Z axis having a 30 degree angle (Rollercoaster Tycoon, Transport Tycoon, etc.)
Otherwise great video!
Ooooh I’ve been looking at buying this! Thank you for the review looks like you can do anything
Appreciate that - I am quite arty and love stuff like this and creating in general. Thanks for watching! Mark
I’m considering getting just for the hell of it
I've been waiting for this game for TOO LONG
It was worth it :)
Does the Switch version support ATB-Active Time Battles as seen in some of the earliest Final Fantasy games?
I doubt so.
It's intigrated in RMMZ for PC though.
It'll have sideview though. It's a setting in the database.
I can work with that, I suppose...
Ok, now we need "Unterwegs in Düsterburg" for this.
Is it possible to sell or publish the games you make with this digitally?
Why I dont have rpg maker in my nintendo store?
What i'd love to know is...if I buy this for the PC, then use tons of custom content including different music etc...could you then upload that and play it on the switch? or would Nintendo or someone else flag it and get it taken down because it has different content than the original game?
RPG maker ace is the best thing ever, I mean I miss making the RPGs and creating stories! Maybe I should get back into it!
34,99€ in Europe until 10th Jan 2021 - as PC version costs 30€ I think it's a very good prive so after seeing your good review I'll buy it
A little late in the game for me viewing this but I’ll say this; I think even if you didn’t want to make, the idea of playing other people’s home brew rpgs is a big appeal with the fact there must be tons available now.
I'd say I'm pretty familiar with JRPG's in general, but how have I not heard of this - this is great
It's very fun
I'm sure someone would definitely try to make Zelda BotW on this 2D maker, mark my words! ;)
That would be a really hard project.
I'm making a remake of lunar 2
I've heard that players in Japan have discovered a way to utilize ATB in MV Switch port through common events. There's even instructions on how to use it on Google. However, it is written in Japanese and no one has translated it yet. But it goes to show that the console port might be capable of doing things the PC plugins can... Hm.
I'm curious if you can import pc RPGs onto this version.
I don’t think you can! Mark
I have it on my switch but I don’t know how to make my own rpgs but I’ve tried looking it up but it doesn’t give me any info so if you know how to do that PLEASE TELL ME
One thing I love about RPG Makers is the cover art ;-)
So huge question, can you somehow place custom made files, like characters, music and etc on too the Switch version?
I’m intrigued with this, we don’t have enough games about genocidal dolphins taking over the world
Wat about Ecco lol?
Thats because children arnt making video games
What are some good rpg maker games on the switch? I can't find any videos.
I'm loving the game! But I hate how it has a computer interface. It's really hard to see on the handheld screen
If you get this on switch you need a mouse and keyboard it helps when you are working on your adventure at home
,the touch screen does the job on the go just fine
My mouse didnt work on the game?
For casuals, all this game will be used for is to download other people's games, since it takes a collossal amount of time to create a good RPG.
Can people rate other people's RPGs?
Yea you can rate them from 1-5 stars
There's a Player version which is free. That one *just* gives you the ability to download and play other people's games.
How do you install the dlc on switch?
Do you not play in handheld mode? Or does it not allow you to type by touching the screen when using rpgmaker?
Is it possible to overhaul the combat engine natively?
I have an idea for an action RPG but the turn based combat of RPG Maker means it's the first thing I'd need to completely replace.
I only wish there was more creation options for character sprites.
I have a problem where the game didn't show me the tutorial and the create a game and eshop options are not there pls help
You need to open the game under a different profile. Play the tutorial and then go back to your main profile to carry on
Thank you
I understand that this could be said about any game with player enabled content creation, but I've always been confused when I saw this in the coming soon section of the eShop and then after finding out it's been on multiple consoles in the past. Wouldn't the PC version offer hundreds of thousands more levels of creativity through importing your own assets? (or even changing code yourself to make something unique happen you otherwise couldn't do with the base code and let me say I have barely any knowledge of coding.)
Yep but not everyone has a pc for younger people this would be a pretty sweet start to creating rather than playing Fortnite all the time. Mark
It seems like a decent game for people who like to get involved in a deep project and creating something that they can eventually be proud of.
are you able to download templates or modify existing rpg maker games? (is there even a share and browse feature)
Thanks for including the Canadian price! Been waiting for that for a while 👍
Can I make the characters different races?
This is good stuff keep it up. Not a game for me but your style has me re watching a lot of your vids and reducing my inclination to watch ign nintendo content
That's very cool, thanks! Mark
Can your games be substantial in this game? Like is it possible to make a 15 hour long game or is it only like 1 hour long mini adventures?
Yeah they can be massive
So how do I get to play a game someone else created on this?
I haven't seen the video yet. Will it spoil anything?
i remember playing the rpg maker in ps1. I love the pre made game named gobli. i remember me and my friends attempted to make a game but sadly our short attention spanned brain prevented us to finish the game. im gonna buy this and will finish the said game.
Does any one knows if you reccord put voice acting in the switch version ?
I don't think you can
Could someone tell me if this game is only to make turn based combat or could you make some thing that allows you to attack overworld enemies (like the old Zeldas).
Would love to see similar design programs being made with other genres in mind too. Would love a Platformer maker or a fighting game maker. That would be sweet.
You can't, it's only possible in the PC version, where you can change the code or add plugins.
Does this one allow to download user created games?
Can some one please tell me how a mouse works on this
it doesn't
I cannot figure out how to make my own
Is rpg maker mv still active?
It's a lot brighter then I thought it would be. Idk why I thought it would be dark..
Good lord. I remember playing this on my first pc on dial up Internet. Brilliant
Can you design your own sprites or animations from scatch or are you limited to just modifying existing ones?
Now we can all make Kemco like games.
I would SOOO jump on this but sorry it would just engulf my entire life lol.
well then you be happy to hear it has rpg maker 2000 sprites and tiles in it and music too.
game.dreamers I mean I didn’t use the default stuff but nostalgic for sure!
Well I was just surprised they added that stuff any way because it's useful because on the switch no customs add on are plugins are supported.
game.dreamers Yeah that really sucks but at the same time it levels the playing field I guess and keeps it simple. Leave it to Switch to oversimplify lol. For better or worse
I started this today, but it doesnt work-
Is it possible to make something similar to Pokemon?
Great review. Just one question: the games you make on the Switch version of RPG Maker can only be played and shared on Nintendo Switch, right ?
yes.
@@icefire2626 OK, thanks.
I'm checking the online shop and it says is free... or what is it?? 🤔
I know that you can export to their online area. Could you then download and edit on PC? I'm not sure I'm afraid. Mark
SwitchUp No
Might eventually buy it. I'll keep an eye on if it gets a sale on Switch.
Pre owned copy online @ GameStop for 25$
Any good action rpgs?
Is it still worth it if I'm only planning on playing games made by others? Also can I play games from other regions like Japan?
It’s free download
@@Dom_Solo Ok nice, no need to buy it then.
does it have multiplayer?
Thanks for this one. I really fancy giving this a go but wonder if having it on pc give more access to modding and importing other files.
@@Enaronia thanks for that- good point. I do enjoy doing my own art stuff for projects but you're right there is a lot of pressure on that being good 👍
