Great topic. Thanks for posting the video. I'm about to try this out in Moab next week with my tech savvy 13 yo drone pilot operating the DJI from the back seat. We'll see how he does.
This is something ive been wondering myself. I think they use active track when doing these shots so that they can drive with minimal worry about the drone.
There is other ways to get what appears to be drone footage. A camera mounted high on the jeep will give what some think is drone footage. As you seen the drone in "tracking" mode worked and will get better over time. Also they limit it and you don't see them doing it for a long time frame. Also a lot of the trips take 4 hours to do.. the videos they make is 30 mins or shorter.
The pilot in command (PIC) is supposed to have eyes on the drone at all times. Maybe not his own eyes; a visual observer sufficies. But someone must have eyes on the drone to be in compliance. A person out in the country driving AND operating a drone cannot very well be in compliance.
I suspect that it's follow mode + not being in compliance. I've had a passenger pilot a drone for me but he was licensed and experienced. Most of the time my passenger is my wife who is not licensed and not experienced (nor particularly interested)... and she doesn't drive manual (again, not interested in it) which means most of the time I just don't get drone footage at all.
@@shoveI It can be mildly stressful to decide who drives and who flies. My buddy crashed his drone and has no cinematic sense whatsoever. As a driver he's a bit scary, too. So, buddy drives the Jeep not faster than the drone can fly and I fly the drone (Phantom 3, no "follow me" mode). This allows me to be creative with the flight and watch out for obstacles in the air while hopefully the Jeep driver is watching out for obstacles on the road.
According to the FAA... neither the Pilot in Command nor the Designated Pilot is allowed to be driving a vehicle. They leave no question. Including using any aitomated modes. Do with that what you will. That is just the regulation, which you should know already as using your drone footage on your monetized RUclips channel...you should have taken the Part 107 license tests. But you do you, if you can't afford a new drone... I don't think you'd enjoy FAA fines...lol
I am actually well aware of the regulations, the video itself was far more melodramatic then reality, it was infact meant to simply point out that those Productions are either very well made, "hiding" a camera crew or otherwise. Due to the overactive and melodramatic nature of my little experiment I chose not to cover the regulations as I am not looking to get anyone in trouble either. Frankly, the majority of those clips are staged, the only time the drone was actually in the air was for those couple minutes in follow me mode..... when I fly for actual footage, I am not driving, and that was my point. It's not safe, it's not legal and it should not be done.... so I appreciate your comment on this, I just felt I should clarify that you actually got the point on what I was saying. Lol.... and this video was meant to be ridiculous and funny, as a way of pointing that information out, without necessarily "calling" anyone out. 😉
I cannot imagine even trying to fly and drive at the same time. I fly the drone, buddy drives the Jeep. I suppose you could let the drone follow you automatically BUT if your eyes are on the road, they are NOT on the drone, and that's a violation.
I am pretty sure all the youtubers I have seen driving and flying are doing it with auto transmissions. Adding the manual has to make things extra complicated.
I agree man
Just don't tell the faa
You're really only supposed to fly as a passenger according to the rules

Sounds like fun! 👍
I use follow mode. It follows you from behind or from the side.

Keep practicing it gets better ,but always better with friends and family to help.

You need to use a drone with object tracking..
how you doing?- Thank you-that's stunning picture, JJeeping-=)
I always wondered how they do it as well.
Do that with an fpv rig..😂
Just bring along an operator.
Follow me mode or have someone else. No video is worth running off the side of the mountain.

weigh points. they use weighpoints
Interesting. I may try that, assuming it doesn't require internet signal .... most locations are so remote there is no service.... lol
I have a Parrot bebop 2 drone that has a follow me option
Have a passenger control camera.

Agreed.
Yes you can. I've done it several times. It's just not very fun. Get someone else to drive and it's way more fun and the footage is a lot less jerky!
Follow me mode
