Thank you Lisa for a great tutorial . The original lyric written by MacColl contained the line, "smelled the smoke on the Salford Wind." This displeased the Salford council to the point where they pressured MacColl to change it to "smelled the spring on the smoky wind."

@@TheUkuleleFool 10 out of 10.......no many people research these sangs and jist assume they are irish because they are popular in ireland. it's sangs like this that made the dubliners. the fledgling irish bands in the late 50s/early 60s adopted many english and scottish sangs.

MacColl was a literary genius. He lead the UK Theater revivle (This song came from a MacColl play scene change), the UK Folk revivle (see "River Thames Flow Sweetly" and "My Old Man" ) He drove the invention of the UK radio play/ documentary featuring real, working class people with music written to accompany ( see "Sholes Of Herring", "North Sea Holes," "The Big Hewer", "Freeborn Man", "Moving On Song"), and he was also prominent in the "Right To Roam" protests which took common land back off the rich (see "The Manchester Rambler") He was a political activist, He was a lyricist extraordinaire to his dying days, penning many beautiful songs including "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" made famous by Roberta Flack and the beautiful end of life song "The Joy Of Living" He was father to the late Kirsty MacColl who was a brilliant artist in her own right and was famous for the female lead in the Pogues mega Xmas hit "The Fairytale Of New York"

@@TheUkuleleFool There's been many covers of MacColls songs, most of which he passionately hated. This is a sweet take on Shoales Of Herring from a movie. Would maybe work on Uke for something more thought provoking? ruclips.net/video/NWJz_-hseJQ/видео.html

Loved this song as I bought the Pogues debut album back in the 80's. Your tutorial has made it fairly easy for me to have a go at but I'll need to practice my strumming. I'll also change the lyrics so I can play the 'Virgil Van Dyke' song (Liverpool FC captain) which is sung by Liverpool supporters to their hero.

I am even older to the party on this song than you.
I heard it for 1st time pre St Patrick's Day 2024.
I did not especially like it. I listened to it again 3 days after St Patrick's Day.
Suddenly it captured me. I fell in love with it. I especially enjoy
songs that I can play using the Cowboy Strum with accessible
    chords.
Thank you thank you for the tip
on how to make playing the Em chord easier.
Stopping as part of the play to allow time to get fingers in place.
    Brilliant.
Will that work on other songs
    like Mr Bojangles?

      @@TheUkuleleFool Yes, I need help
      on "Angel from Montgomery"
I tried learning to play "Angel from
      Montgomery" about 4 months ago.
I could not play it adequately &
      stopped trying. I couldn't do a strum
pattern, so I was using single strums.
The two main chords D & G were
      so slow for me.

@@TheUkuleleFool One more excellent song, I just learned to play
      is "Sounds of Silence"
It has the four easy chords. But
      I can't work in a strumming pattern
      Except down strums.
Also, there is a great simple finger-picking pattern that some people use. I can't finger pick.
But, I am trying to use the simple
finger-pick just on the intro or
intro & 1st verse. Help me to play it.
Play using thumb & Index finger
      Play strings pattern 3. 1 . 2. 1
      repeat quickly over & over
Simple but I am not adept at it

Was Salford dirty then? Or had it cleaned up? From photos I found on the web I saw that it had been bombed during WW2. When I was going to school in London in the early 80s I would see during my wanderings evidence of the bombings. I am sure that in 1949 that contributed to the dirty old town aspect.
