Scott, you are an absolute genius. Wish you were closer to my project in north Idaho. I have a 230' flowing artesian well and asked my well driller/pump installer for a Simple Pump just for hand pumping in addition to the electric pump...he sort of laughed at me and said "buy the pump and when the world ends take the well cap off and put it in myself!" I asked about having the water already flowing go into the storage tank and he again said it would need to be capped off and routed back down the well hole meaning I will be pumping with electricity ALL the time! Suggestions? I really want back ups to my back ups because they do have extended power outages...have generator for some of that. Thanks for ALL your great videos.
a small note with the reverse logic float switch is you can use relays to reverse the logic of the switch if you do get the wrong one though naturally it will consume a tiny bit more power
Hey brother. Long time viewer, first time commenting. Just wanted to thank you for all of the awesome videos that you put up. You do an outstanding job explaining your projects and I've gotten so many ideas on how to make my future off-grid property a reality. Cheers!
Roll Tide! You’re in my neighborhood. I wish there were more tools available to the people in Alabama like there are for people up north. We have so many people that would love to go off grid but all the tools for this are hundreds of miles away.
Instead of using those float switches you can use a hot tub part. Threads into 1/8 inch pipe thread it is an adjustable pressure switch. You just need to figure out the head difference. The switchs are made in different pressure ranges.
One thing I have found out is do not put your well in the pump house. Put it outside and use a pit less adapter to run the water inside. You will thank me when you have to pull that pump out.
Lovely work neat and clean... Now what is the cost on a project like this on parts Minus the building of course unfortunately I live in a very non permissible area of Maryland being Baltimore county... I really would like to get something like you have here to the rear of my home we have a stream and County Flood plain the water for the stream is less then 10 ft down. So I would hope that the water table would not be far off I only have about 1/3 of an AC yep that's it.. I would like to put the Solar on the roof of the front of the home to where I was thinking in the back of the property where we were thinking is about 120ft but the front of the home gets the brunt of the sun all day it has been a blessing for our heating bills.but since we have city water and sewer how can we have this augment our existing water? we have a 3 bedroom Brick rancher with full basement about 1800sq ft for both levels with 2 bath was thinking about a reverse osmosis system for the up stairs kitchen sink for cooking and food and then something larger for the rest of the house. my mother is living here now due to a heart condition I have large washer and dryer setup downstairs and I am looking a small stack-able unit up stairs due to her health problems so she would not have to deal with the stairs not sure if this affects your system not like we would be running both systems anyway... Ideas Sir because I have some money coming in and was wondering about a solar system and and Battery bank that could run my home for 3 days and use a genny to top off my Batteries when needed so that being said I will be using a central boiler for heat and water but wanted to used a insta hot or solar water heater... I had a portable genny when we had a major outage and it was a 6.5 and that ran the whole house tvs, puters and all only tripped the breaker when I used the washer and dryer at the same time both are eletcbut the new one will NG and God willing have a way to switch to LP because I want my genny to be LP and have 2000 LP tank ... suggestions Sir
What we have done when there is not enough height is to install a roof jack or turbin right over the well casing. An inexpensive skylight would do the same thing.
Love the channel, but it is so easy to get overwhelmed. Do you have any advice on how to get started, self-learn some of the technical know-how, bite through the jargon and actually figure out what you mean by the technical talk? =) I mean, what should I look at first? Electricity or plumbing? I'm thinking electricity, for safety. But what would be good resources to learn the basics? Sorry if you're answered this in the past, but I couldn't find it in your FAQ and even your initial videos were quite technical.
pommelstrike. Did you ever f one that information? We're just starting our research and don't know where to start. I even looked into tech school. Rinky dink town.
I noticed the same pump controller in several of your videos. I am presently using Grundfos but am looking at other options for a new location on our farm. Would you please identify the manufacturer for the controller you use?
Like your video! Thank you. Question: if a solar panel produces at its peak, say 100w @12v. Does this mean that after this energy is stored and need to use it on an appliance I will have 10w @ 120v? So if this is right, for running a 100w bulb for 1 hr I will need 10 hr of peak solar power?
I have recently drilled a borehole in my small farm, with water level between 24mtrs to 45mtrs, also bought shimge submissible pump 2.2kwts, also bought a 6.5kw generator, how do i install this unit and how do i secure/suspend it in the borehole
Hey E-775 great videos and thank you for putting them up. I am very interested in a system like this and would like to get a pricelist for all of the components and design. I am out West in the hills and have recently put in a well (no pump system yet either) and want to system to be similar to this-- on solar and hand pump backup. I plan on doing a ground mount solar a well. Also how deep is your well? I am at 140. I would like to know what type of solar pump you decided on based on the depth. Regards, Scot
Our well in central Mexico is about 108 METERS deep. We have a submersible pump powered by a gas generator. Can the Simple pump work at about 90 meters? We hate to be dependent on gas. What about other solar pumps? Thanks, Kit.
I am drilling a well for my new house and need some tips on how to get water to the pressure tank if the power goes out. I have some solar power I just don't know how you can pump from 280 feet. I thought that took a lot of energy. I do already have 2, 145watt solar panels, four 6 volt deep discharge batteries, an inverter and Midnight 150 charge controller. I'd like to do something like you have shown here. How can I contact you for assistance?
what would a system of this caliber cost i like the idea of a back up plan. i just purchased my off grid site, so iam looking at this as my next step.. thank you for any response
How deep is this well? SimplePump's website doesn't say how deep of a well that their solar pump can drive. It only says it's a 1/4HP pump. We're building and our driller just said they'll probably need to go down to 200', which evidently classifies us as a "deep well" needing a deep well pump. It looks like most deep well pumps are 1/2 to 1HP, not 1/4HP.
Love your Work...my family and I would love to consult/hire you on some projects we want to accomplish on our property in western North Carolina. We have springs we would like to develop among many other things. Please let me know the best way to communicate. Thank you, and merry Christmas!
Hi, I live in New Jersey, and I would to install my well water pump , but my concer is how can I prevent from freezing the installation above ground, I had seen other wells water and they have a horseshoe fitting 4 feet deep
Like your videos! All very informative. Couple of questions about this project: Do you need a permit for the install? The green storage tank - is it food grade? Thank you. Mike
Hey Scott, long time sub here with a few questions for you. I am finally in the process of purchasing some land to build an off grid cabin and am in the thinking mode as far as water. I am thinking of a direct solar powered dc submersible pump about 100ft deep pumping slowly into a storage tank during the day. And then using a small dc pump in the house to get the water from the tank. That would eliminate the pressure tank and any pump to help increase the pressure of that tank. Do you see any problem with doing that to begin with for a small cabin? I will probably start with a small solar system, around 1kWh. It is only me and a dog so I really don't have a need for lots of water all at once. I don't see a problem as long as the pump coming out of the tank can produce enough volume and pressure to be able to take a shower. It's probably kind of unconventional but if it could get me through the first few years when money will be fairly tight while building, it would be nice. Do you have some contact info if I have further questions or want your help when the time comes? Thanks for your help! Levi
I'm definitely interested in a system like this. I'm curious was that well pre-existing and if so what is the average cost to put in a system like this? I would tap the well and build the building and do all the work myself, I'm just curious what all the equipment and hardware would run me.
What is the deepest depth you can go and still be able to pump. Example my well is very deep. Static water level is about 350 feet and the current 2hp 220v pump is set at 580 feet. Total well depth is 600 feet. We had the pump set at 420 feet but we had a year where it ran dry because we share with 2 other homes and some people think if your on a well you have unlimited supply even in a drought! Had to pay about 3 grand to have the pump lowered! looking to move out of here though but was curious how deep one of these systems can pump
+Randy H Randy, We can pump from 820 feet at 5 gpm. I just designed and shipped a system to a gentleman in Oregon whose static was 580 and depth 700. We set the pump at 650. It also has a built in low water sensor to protect the pump. We took the strategy of pumping to a cistern with this pump so as not to rely on the low water sensor and so that people would actually see there supply forcing them to be more conservative in drought conditions.
This is a prime example of why not to cheap out on drill depth.. so much pulls off aquifers now the levels are always dropping. The deeper you can go and pump with pressure the better. Till localities start promoting harvesting there is just too many people all pulling from the same source.. pump as deep as you possibly can to prevent issues later with a dry well needing to be redrilled. Personally I think it's a good idea to go ahead and install a dry well as well and fill it with harvesting when needed. (Check your local codes before doing this cause some places they will consider this a crime for diverting or stealing water. It isn't classified the same as harvesting to typical storage)
Thx. I need help I have a old school hand pump. (Recently installed) and I want to get an inexpensive submersible pump (solar) to work in tandem How can I reach you for help

No problem. Not using the system does not hurt the system. The Batteries would be in float charge and the pump can just sit there. You do not have to add any loads. I hope that helps. This system looks like it would work for my operation here at Pine Meadows Hobby Farm.
+Pine Meadows Hobby Farm A Modern Homestead Just saw your comment. Send me and email and we can start the process. info@practicalpreppers.com
One thing I didn't hear was how deep is the well. My well here in central Texas is 540' deep.
Do you know your elevation? Like how far above sea level?
this is a sweet system the only thing that I think would make it better would be if it was all under ground
Very nice enclosure.
Thinking about drilling our well. Need to see how much all this would cost. Can I get more info

How would you combat the pipes freezing if this system were being used in a state like MA?

Nice. What type of water treatment system was between the green storage tank and the end users?

Do you have the green tanks and how much you charger for them , or do you know were to get them .

what would a system of this caliber cost i like the idea of a back up plan. i just purchased my off grid site, so iam looking at this as my next step.. thank you for any response

no permit required. The tank is food grade polyethylene.
Thank you so munch!
I wish I understood all his technical jargan. I just need to have it made and installed by him. Lol
What about getting enough off the grid water,to sell to neighbors and otjer extended family members houses?

What size wire do I use for a 12 volt deep well pump that will be about 150 feet down then another 30 feet to pump/solar power supply?

@engineer775 - are you saying SimplePump rates their 1/4HP solar at those depths? What is the flow rate?
Can you drink this water directly or you need a filter?
Thx. I need help
I have a old school hand pump. (Recently installed) and I want to get an inexpensive submersible pump (solar) to work in tandem
How can I reach you for help
About how much does this entire system (including set up) Cost?
Could you set this system up so it only refills when the sun is shining instead of batteries and another solar panel? With a hand pump for backup?
yes he has anther video on his property that he talks about it.
Have you seen the price of them simple pumps?? cost an arm and a leg
if I have grid water can I put in a well and pump on my land ?
Are the batteries vented to the outside? What type of battery boxes are used? Thanks
They are AGM batteries and the building is well ventilated. the battery boxes are NOCO 484s
what's the purpose of your yellow, reverse logic float?

engineer775 Practical Preppers does that include the install??
Is that rough price accounting for that building - and your labor and travel, ETC? Or just all parts for the water system(s) only?

Should add in wind turbine generator with the solar system to change the power supply source
Wind generators are problematic near trees. When below the tree tops, in turbulent wind, they don't produce much power even at good wind speeds.
