I feel like Brian learned to sing through all these years and this performance which is breathtaking by the way is a great testament to that. I'm not saying he couldn't sing at the start, he was amazing but mostly it was because of his style, songs.his artistic nature but he does not have a real gift as a singer. so he's improved so much and I love it
He sound like that since the very beginning. There are a lot of old b-sides were you can hear him.
Who says what's the proper singing "style." not every vocalist will sound the same and the fact that Brian's voice is very distinctive and unique speaks volumes.
He sings better than a lot of these mainstream shit bands.

This album is decent but it gets aloof from some of their typical techniques and it turns out to be really different because sadness and blur don't run this album that much. So, I assess this work as a breakthrough and a change of direction, as if they might look for some happier styles but sometimes it invokes a choice: you'll feel the need of sticking to a certain method, allegedly propelled by this sudden and unexpected change you couldn't imagine! Do you want to foster this new approach or do you believe it is worth to throw it all back? I prefer the former approach and I want to point out I'm not the only one!
I prefer the former approach too and for the same reasons as you.So I prefer LLL to BFS....But I like this slow version of "For wath is Worth."
