I still have this and many other of the KGB Homegrown albums. Brings back memories of some fantastic times in what was a wonderful place to grow up. This song was probably the A-side off the album as what red blooded San Diego young man couldn't relate to it. I think I have all the vinyl up through VI or VII of the Homegrowns. Nice find on here. Thanks to the uploader for the nostalgia and thanks to the artist for part of our cultural heritage.

I totally remember this song from when I was a kid. My buddies parents had the record. I have been searching for about 45 mins tonight to find this song. It is hilarious!!

@adabee Hi, my band was lucky. We made it onto the first four Homegrown albums. #1 featured "So long, San Diego." #2 and Homegrown's greatest hits was where "Black's Beach" appeared. #3 was "SDSU Blues," but the guy doing the album notes screwed up and used my name for the song. He also gave me credit for playing piano when I was quite clear in telling him it was done by a UCSD professor named, Tim Jones. Finally, we did "Toll Bridge Refugee" on HG #4. It was a lot of fun.

I wrote this song in about 30 minutes one day before work. When my wife woke up, I told her that I had just written a really stupid song for the KGB Homegrown album. She loved the song and insisted that I record it. Vicki Fox had such a great voice that I let her sing harmony on it. Sadly, the volume for the back-up is so low, she can hardly be heard.
Thanks for posting it, and I'd like to consider it dedicated the my good friend and engineer, Jim Kroth-R.I.P.

I was so blessed to have such creative people recording with me in the early years. I had the easy part. Silly songs came to me in a half hour, like they were gifts. The tough part was to make something of them. Jeff Kroth, dead at sixty-two, was one of the quiet heroes in the background of the first three Homegrown songs. RIP, Jeff. Hold a place for me, and I will sing back-up on someone else's songs, if you will let me participate!

Sorry, John, I had a senior moment. Toll Bridge Refugee came out on Homegrown IV in 1976. It featured the last incarnation of my band Island.

Thank you. When I think that I almost didn't turn it in, it makes me laugh. Only my wife Vicki could have persuaded me to record it. She was sure it would get on. But before anyone gives her an award for forward thinking, she hated "SDSU BLUES," and said it wouldn't make Homegrown III. History proved her wrong!

I was at PTL High when this came out. This was one of my favorites on the album. Had all the Homegrown Albums at one time.

Thanks, John. Too bad you didn't stay around until the fall of 1975. Homegrown III featured "Toll Bridge Refugee," a song about a sailor stationed on North Island who doesn't have the 60 cents to cross the bridge, but must get back to base on time.

The album was the KGB Homegrown album. KGB is a San Diego station. I have the album still.

I now have a playlist of the surviving songs from Island's 1977 rock opera. To access it, type in "Island- the Life and Times of Johnny Columbus."

I finally got around to putting one of my serious Homegrown entries on You tube. It's the same band as was on Black's Beach, minus Vicki who was never really in the band. We also had some guest musicians. It can be accessed from You tube by typing in- what I need/old town lady. That's the name of the song, and it was entered into Homegrown III, but didn't make it. I've always liked it, and wished it got on.
