People forget Shadow was the actual main villian of Sonic Adventure 2, he was playing Eggman the entire time and had full control of the situation. This is why it was so crucial that Maria still dies, the tragic way it happens is what fuels his desire to see the planet wiped out and it's also that sympathetic reason that makes his decision to help stop it much more believable.
Shadow was The Heavy, Gerald was The Man Behind The Man. Shadow was the main antagonist, but Gerald is the one who set everything into motion so Shadow would do exactly what he wanted, which is destroy the world. That said, Shadow could not have done anything had Eggman not freed him to begin with.

Then together they powerup to get him to cooldown and Shadow realizes how he let hate, pain and suffering take over and remembers what Maria told him in a flashback. Then they all become quilled avengers who agree to protect the current world from future threats!

Shadow the Hedgehog is my top favourite sonic character of all time, I've been playing sonic adventure 2 battle on the GameCube since 2004 and played sonic heroes also and in Christmas 2005 I've played Shadow the Hedgehog on the PS2, That 2005 shadow the Hedgehog game was my most favourite sonic game of all time and that game alone made me a massive shadow the Hedgehog fan, because of his story, motivation and his badassary. I'm so looking forward to seeing sonic the hedgehog 3 and I'm going be wearing full black and red shadow colour scheme on release day.
With all due respect, HMK, this was an amazing trailer, especially with Jim Carrey going to play both Eggman and Professor Robotnik in it. Shadow's design is amazing, and it is good to see that Commander Walters and G.U.N. will be needing Team Sonic's help to deal with Project Shadow. Not to mention references to the games, especially Shadow the Hedgehog with Shadow on a G.U.N. motorcycle.
