Great video series I have learned a bunch and your humble / can do attitude is inspiring - it is refreshing to see this being done in a single garage and how you overcome the limitations of a single garage.

I’m a bit late but enjoying this video series, for a bloke that wasn’t sure what terminals to connect to his battery you’ve done amazingly, you might find that the cam marks weren’t aligned to the chain at the TDC you had at that particular point but because it VVC it will be aligned after mor rotations.

Ha! Ha! That is one thing, how to connect the battery, I’m feelin’ pretty solid on that one now 😅 Thank you for watching 🤘😎

My 1st time taking out the cam covers (on a 99 M96), didn't have the tools either. I just used some small vice grips tightened just enough to hold the cams flat against the journals in the head and with some paper to prevent marks. The main reason for the holders is that some of the valves may be pressed down and it can exert twist and damage the caps near the variocam actuators or even break the cams?! (I've heard in some forum). Great video series so far! I did purchased the kit later on as is pretty much required to put the engine back together.

Generally speaking you'd when removing heads from a block, you'd want to loosen the head bolts/studs from outermost to inner most in a pattern around the head progressively. It's not a huge deal on a motor you plan on resurfacing, or on heads that are this short in length. But with longer heads, especially straight 6's you do run the risk of bending the head while removing it if you remove them in other ways. But GREAT VIDEO, learning a lot about the little differences between these motors and more conventional ones. I may end up with a cheap 996 in the future, and it's good to know what I may be looking at if I end up pulling a motor. Thanks for all the detail :)

A for Abgas is close but actually it's for Auslass, literally meaning exit.
Removed the M96/01 from my 99 996 but had the luxury of a 2 post lift.
Kept the dual mass flywheel as it was within spec but only just. Going by your reasoning It'd been better to replace it together with the clutch I did have to replace.
Kept the original dual row IMS bearing only removed the seal I could access.
    Keep up the good work!
