  • We've reached the end of the first season of 'The Scooby-Doo Show'!
    Did it go out with a whimper or a bang?
    Or something in between?
    A bimper or a whang?
    Wait, that sounds vaguely inappropriate.

    The Spirits of 76 Ghosts always freaked me out as a kid. There's just something about the monsters looking like real people as opposed to supernatural creatures that disturbed me.

      Maybe it was the unexpected “BOOOOO!!!” from Benedict Arnold after a transition. For me, it was the eerie music and scene involving the suspicious wall passage when Arnold and Andre came out of hiding from the bear statues.

      Then again, perhaps the Gang could talk their way out of it considering THEY were the ones to uncover what should have been an easily-discovered crime by Federal authorities.
      I can't imagine Treasury officials would want to be embarrassed by having it come to light in a courtroom that they somehow overlooked an eight-foot wide chasm at the back of their printing room, while a group of four teenagers found it right away.

      I absolutely appreciate your confidence in my writing skills, but there is a world of difference between freeform RUclips content like mine and a structured, three act story necessary for film and television.
      That's not to say I haven't toyed with the idea of writing Scooby fan fic, but I don't think I have the talent to do that.
      I'm a better editor than I am a writer, to be honest.

    Considering that Monsters Unleashed and Cyber Chase both use villains from Where are You and the Scooby-Doo Show that would technically mean both shows take place in the same universe. So the Technicolor Phantoms being recolored Phantom Shadows should already be a big giveaway that they were fake.

      The continuity of the Dooniverse is really an eye of the beholder sort of deal. A great example can be found in an episode of What’s New Scooby Doo featuring a flashback to when the gang were kids animated in A Pup Named Scooby Doo’s art style. However Fred’s parents appear in What’s New Era Film Pirates Ahoy looking totally different from their A Pup counterparts. You could chock this up to animation style differences, but it muddy’s the water regardless.
      In the case of later continuity’s melding together Where Are You and the Scooby Doo Show, even Mystery Incorporated which canonizes all the cases from Where Are You is in the town of Crystal Cove. Not Coolsville like Monsters Unleashed. Therefore I like to think that the events of Where Are You (and occasionally the Scooby Doo Show) are “canon events” in most iterations of the gang, but leave room for alteration. Certain events may play out differently but the ghost and culprit are usually the same. A great example is Dr Jonathan Jacobo in Unleashed, a German mad scientist obsessed with creating real monsters. However in the Scooby Doo Show he is Johnny Jacobo, music pirate. Both characters use the Pterodactyl Ghost as part of a money making scheme, and both are foiled by the Scooby gang. That is about all they have in common besides name.
      Basically each series takes place in its own universe, but many series branch off from Where Are You or other shows in some capacity.

    • @JoeGoesOver
      @JoeGoesOver  8 месяцев назад +13

      This is why I like referring to it as the "Scooby-Dooniverse", which would allow for any number of former characters or their costumes to appear, without necessarily meaning a particular iteration of the Gang encountered them, or that previous events happened exactly the same way.
      Sadly, this would also excuse stuff like 'Return to Zombie Island' and totally trying to ruin a classic through retconning.
      I know I bring up Godzilla a lot, but I'm not kidding when I say enjoying those films helped me accept how little continuity matters when it comes to enjoying a particular franchise.
      Admittedly, the comic book nerd in me absolutely prefers adherence to canon, but I'm also old enough that it may not be a deal breaker, either.

That and the Space Kook episode did it for me. I always like the moments where Shaggy is in on the whole explaining the villains’ schemes cause it shows that despite being a scaredy cat he is still capable of observing things. @@JoeGoesOver it’s weird. We see some super frozen ‘gop’ sickles later in the episodes, presumedly much colder just freezing temp, maybe close to zero Fahrenheit or colder. The street sickles were still frozen, and it’s night time, so presumedly (again) the street wouldn’t be super hot like it would be during direct sunlight in the day time. Ambient temperature could be assumed to be around 70 degrees, with the road surface being a better than average conductor or heat. So the question is…how long were the gops on the road?

That's when we'd go on an orgy of cleaning and repairs and then pass the exam with flying colors.
      Of course, after that we went back to not doing much cleaning or sanitization until the next surprise inspection.

    Major Andre might not have been a traitor but he's not the worst choice since he conspired with Benedict Arnold. If Ben's there, it makes sense that Andre's there. I'll also give the Scooby writers props for including William Demont, he's obscure enougj that he doesn't even have a wikipedia page or known picture. They clearly did their homework to pick him.
    About the inconsistencies you mentioned, the out of universe explanation is likely that the animators changed their mind on who was in each costume but I have a theory. Wilit and Clive both clearly took their costumes off at multiple points so the third guy might have as well. It's possible they just grabbed the nearest outfit and put it on, that they weren't always dressed as the person they were unmasked as.
    As for the scene where all three are watching Mr. Clive, Shaggy might have been onto something when he accused Grumper of being one of the villains during the unmasking. He's the only other suspect so he's the only one who could've been in that third costume unless Wilit and Clive have another henchman.

    Hi Joe, i'm a recent viewer on the channel, but wanted to say, that i really enjoy the videos you make. As a long time Scooby-Doo fan it's refreshing to have someone put so much work and time in analyzing episode by episode the shows.
    The idea to review them from the perspective of the villains is interesting. I crack up with the ordinary, dead pan logic you use for the different situations. It's fun to point out stuff, that would happen only, because it's a cartoon :d And speaking of that, maybe you are giving too much slack in the scores to the poor villains. After all, if they don't make mistakes on the way, the gang won't be able to solve the mystery.
    I haven't gone back to catch up on all shows yet, but the formula on the Scooby-Doo show is great. Dissecting 2 episodes in these longer videos is a real treat. You do a wonderful job in going through every part of the episode. Maybe you can squeeze in the Operations part, some of the gangs aspect on solving the mystery. I love when you include the goofy and almost absurd scenes they have. I'm sure no one would mind, if you let loose some laughs, when you describe them, as there are plenty cooky stuff, that happen. All the callbacks to previous episodes and other media are also really appreciated.
    I hope you continue with the Scrappy shows as well. I know, they are not as structured as these original ones, but it would be great to see, what you would think about them. Especially those short ones they had, will be a real wtf is happening.

      I've had quite a few inquires as to how or if I'll handle some of the Scrappy era, and so far I'm leaning toward just focusing on the series that maintained the Scooby formula (Gang stumbles upon a mystery involving a guy in a mask, chaos ensues, you meddling kids, etc.). I don't think I can really do much with the ones that just focus on Shaggy, Scooby and Scrappy in a wacky scenario.

    Stupid time zones, this video came out just minutes after I went to bed lol. At least I could catch it now in the morning.
    The ice cream episode has finally been covered so now you don't have to deal with me yapping about it anymore. Yeah Sammy's plan and outfit wasn't the best but I still like the episode largely due to nostalgia. Perhaps the trio did think of switching to using one of the ice cream trucks and that's why there were a bunch of "gopsicles" on the floor, but they decided against it because they didn't want to leave the armored truck there, the police would have been notified of a missing ice cream truck and made the connection that the villains switched vehicles. This means the police would be searching for an ice cream truck and made it easier for the villains to be tracked down. Also the armored truck is more secure in case things got really bad... bad to the point of the villains having to ram through something (even though it failed at the end) or law enforcement opening fire on their truck for whatever reason.
    As for Sammy not changing his appearance, since it looks like the armored truck only has space for two seats in the front, maybe the henchmen (who could just be hired recently and not actively wanted like Sammy himself) would be in the driver and passenger seats while Sammy hid with the money in the back? And since specifically an armored bank truck was reported as missing and was now disguised as an ice cream delivery truck, it would be less likely that the truck would be searched at any tollbooth or border crossing. I guess Sammy and his henchmen hadn't learned the Scooby gang's trick of fitting 4 people and a dog all in the front of their van...
    As someone with a history interest, it's always cool to see historical figures mentioned or adapted as disguises in episodes. Although yeah seems like a strange trio. Benedict Arnold makes sense and I guess there's a stretch to be made for including John André (admittedly the American Revolution is not a subject I know all that much about) but this William Demont guy seems like they really couldn't come up with anyone else. Hell, if you google "William Demont", his ghost from this episode is among the first things that pops up, so he's clearly quite obscure.
    Funny that both villains got a 2.3 D.O.O. Score here. And I wasn't expecting the Demon Shark to be dead last out of the Season 1 monsters. A good disguise doesn't always save someone it seems. At least he wasn't as bad as F***ing Carl the Stuntman.
    Great video as always, Joe!

      Thank you for your nice words!
      Your theories do seem to fit the circumstances, but remember that the ice cream factory was emptied by this point, so if the villains took one of the delivery vehicles, they'd be long gone before anyone would notice.
      Also, the armored truck did fit all three of the bad guys in the front, as seen during their capture at the end.
      It was hilarious during my search for information about the traitors that most (if not all) "photos" of Demont was how he was depicted in this episode!

      @@JoeGoesOver The owner was still there, but fair enough. And yes they did fit three in the front at the end, but Sammy could still have hid in the back at the time when the villains would have left.
      I find it funny that they didn't just do Benedict Arnold and two redcoats as ghosts since Arnold is the only figure there that most American kids would know of and it's not uncommon for H-B to give unnamed henchmen generic disguises like Redbeard's crew. Sure they did a redcoat for that one TNSDM episode but it was only one and also it's not like H-B avoids reusing character models .

    • @JoeGoesOver
      @JoeGoesOver  7 месяцев назад +1

      To be fair the owner was there, but he only showed up at the factory because his silent alarm tripped when the Mystery Machine smashed into the doors. Who could say if and when he would visit the factory when it was shut down from lack of employees? Would Mr. Queen have reason to inspect the garage? Would he be curious enough to lift a tarp on a vehicle parked in the back?
      There definitely seemed to be enough room in the back for Sammy to hide, but it sure looked like it would have been an uncomfortable journey! Then again, for a million dollars, I'd be willing to cram my bloated body into a lotus position for a few hours if that was the payday!
      It's funny, but only after scrubbing through the video to double check what the rear of the truck looked like (which actually changed during the course of the episode), I just noticed how easily the doors flew open when the vehicle smashed into the doors at the end. You'd think an armored car wouldn't so easily spill its contents like that!
      As for the choice of Spirit of '76 villains, I wonder if the writer was a history buff who was just happy he was able to inject a bit of esoteric history in his script?

    Funny thing, I'm not from an English speaking region, but a local station ran both Where Are You? and this show A LOT. And as I was just starting to learn English, the designs of the phantoms and the setting immediately convinced me that the episode's monsters where supposed to be masses on confectionary animated by ghosts.

      @JoeGoesOver Come on Joe, you know I'm not going anywhere. I can't wait for you to do the next movie. I'm going to be here every time you release a new vid. You have become my favorite youtuber. You should start doing merchandise, because I would definitely buy. I could already imagine a Carl the Stuntman shirt

    • @JoeGoesOver
      @JoeGoesOver  7 месяцев назад

      I have considered possible merch, but unfortunately copyright issues would likely crop up.
      In fact, for the two or three T-shirts I designed, I had to go with a Chinese printer because those based in the U.S. didn't want to touch them for fear of copyright infringement, despite what I did obviously being fair-use.
      I only printed one or two each, but that was still more than the companies wanted to risk.
      I will say though, I was very impressed by what the company I used produced. Despite many washings, there has been little to no fading or peeling AND the material itself was extremely comfortable. I can't say the same for stuff I've bought from other RUclipsrs offering less copyright-scary stuff!
      Maybe I'll reconsider a limited merch run after I (hopefully) hit 10,000 subs.

    The ghost of Dr. Coffin is still the number 1 villain this season!!
    Despite seeing both the Mama Cass and Technicolor Phantoms episodes I’d never realized it’s the same exact plot, but just missing the celebrity cameo. While I was surprised by the lower D.O.O. score our Neopolitan friends got, I do have to say the memorable villains scoring as low as they did as a whole this season was unexpected.
    As for the Spirit of 76s I had summed up my thoughts on a video another Scooby content creator did fairly recently, so I’m just gonna paste my thoughts here and add more in another paragraph, The Spirits of 76 is an episode I saw on the 13 Spooky Tales from Around the World dvd, and ngl I always thought they went to the Smithsonian never knew the name was different. I do love the twist that it was the nice guard and not the old mean guard. The inclusion of the cotton gin is cool to me because Eli Whitney is an interesting historical figure. Logically though, I’d think the Reserve would have some sort of alarms in the broken money press room in case something did happen like the episode, and the agent just skims over the destruction of federal and historic property caused by the villains and the gang.
    I know from my original watches of this episode because of the DVD I always had a feeling the old mean guard knew what was going on, especially I’m pretty sure during the unmasking he mentioned he was down patrolling the basement where the drainage was. He’d had to see drilled in wall. I also thought because for whatever reason the disc would skip that Clive was a random never shown person because I’d never seen him in the episode. 100% Scooby and the gang should be banned from all museums, I’m pretty sure Scooby destroys an art museum’s dinosaur exhibit in What’s New. I can’t wait for next season’s rankings.

      Believe it or not, in the official subtitles of the episode, "Splitsonian" is written as "Smithsonian". I guess the subtitle guys didn't get the memo.
      You'd think Mr. Grumper would have found the tunnel, but then again, it was hidden and it was just dumb luck on Scooby's part that he found the switch. Still, seeing wet footprints leading to a wall should have been suspicious enough for Grumper to have made at least one phone call.

    I know this is a long way from now ,but i can't wait until you review Mystery Incorporated .I'm predicting low design scores since most of the villains were motivated by revenge rather than money and pretty high operation scores for all the attempted murders

    • @JoeGoesOver
      @JoeGoesOver  7 месяцев назад

      In the back of my mind I've been wondering how I'd handle ranking the ones from 'Mystery Incorporated', considering the entire series had the overarching plot involving Pericles and his version of the Gang. At this point, I still don't know how to proceed, but that's still, as you said, quite a ways away based on my current output speed.

    To be fair, the color and design tweaks were a lot easier to get away with in an era before the internet, or even VHS players/recorders at home. They never could have known an era of anyone checking their work was coming.

    A missing ice cream truck would be called in to the cops.

    • @TrocaTheNero
      @TrocaTheNero 8 месяцев назад +2

      Yup and they would have left the real truck there which would have been found. Then the police would have been after an ice cream truck and could quite easily track the villains down. By disguising the armored truck as an ice cream truck they could have also probably gotten past any border crossings or similar without too much suspicion, since the police were looking for an armored bank truck.

    • @JoeGoesOver
      @JoeGoesOver  7 месяцев назад +2

      That's probably the best reason for them having disguised the truck, but they still could have simply taken one of the real ice cream trucks in the back, replaced it with the armored car and put a tarp over it. The factory was empty by that point, so there weren't going to be any employees asking about what the tarp was doing there, and be curious enough to lift it.

      @JoeGoesOver no problem thank you for the incredible content as always.
      I wish I could say this week has been better I really do... last week on Tuesday exactly 4 weeks after my dad's death and the day of his funeral we lost my grandad. Then today... we've had to put my dog Diesel down that I've had for 13 years we basically grew up together (I was 6 when we got him so not quite 100% grown up together but very close to it.) 3 losses in 2024 so far... I hate 2024
      Although some good news since its all been bad. Saturday last week we got a puppy which we named Storm (Storm-Jay to me and my mom though, my dad was called Jason so Jay is in honour of him.)
      I hope it's not been too stressful for you :( I hate when works busy, I've not been in since 20th January because of grief though
      No problem it's my pleasure

    • @JoeGoesOver
      @JoeGoesOver  7 месяцев назад

      I'm so sorry to hear that. Words are always inadequate for those going through loss like that, and it's bitterly unfair that anyone should suffer so many in such a short amount of time.
      The only advice I can give to anyone is to grieve in whatever matter helps you cope. You may get others telling you the proper way to show emotion or that you just need to "cheer up" or that your loved ones wouldn't want you to feel the way you do, but in the end the only real cure is time. And even that isn't a cure as years later you might find yourself grieving again for no reason you can even identify.
      Back in 2010 I lost one of my best friends to suicide. Easily the worst day of my life since another friend and I were caught in the middle of what was going on. Years later, I was watching a Beatles documentary and suddenly found myself crying for no reason. It took me a moment to realize that 'Across the Universe' was playing in the background and that was my friend's favorite Beatles song (possibly even his favorite song all together). I had been crying before I even knew why I was crying.
      I know this sounds like I'm saying there no end to grief, but to be honest, it never really ends. But we incorporate the pain into our lives and it becomes part of who we are. Some can accept that, others cannot. Which is why I say mourn your losses in whatever way brings you comfort and don't worry about what others say.
      Congrats for your puppy! I only wish my own recent dog experiences were as pleasant.
      One of my cats is very old and vomits a lot. Earlier this week, I stepped outside my place to my son's apartment next door. We spoke for a while and when I went back to my place, my dog came out to greet my kid. He started to pet her and then stopped because she smelled awful. Sure enough, in that brief ten minutes I left my place, my old cat puked on the floor and my stupid dog rolled around in it, getting it deep in her fur and all over her collar.
      I love Caramel, but there are days...

      @JoeGoesOver thank you so much your words help a lot regardless. Its absolutely horrible how much has happened in such a short amount of time :( its like 2023 & 2024 are just a test to see how long it'll take to break me
      Currently what I've been doing is try to distract myself with me and my moms bedroom swap, however soon I'm going to try distract myself with writing fanfic again as that's helped me before. I haven't even been able to watch one of my favourite shows since I lost my dad (we never watched it together its just the next episode, I got to it at the worst possible time. Said episode is all about the grief Luz feels all these years later after her dad's death and I got to that episode the day my dad died so I've not brought myself to continue my rewatch yet...) time will hopefully help
      I'm so sorry about the loss of your friend I can't imagine how traumatising that must have been being caught in the middle of that :( I get what you mean with things making you cry without realising though. Just this morning I was having a cuddle with Storm in bed then I looked over at Diesels couch to check he didn't feel left out before realising... I keep finding myself nearly crying but also tears aren't coming a lot either?
      Thank you so much! We got Storm to help Diesel, me and my mom its just all the more heartbreaking that we lost Diesel so soon after, Diesel never warmed to Storm but I think he was being hurt by Storm but Storm didn't realise. He'd always pull away from Storm and Storm would go by his paw, his paw was part of why we had to put him down (there was other stuff too but his paw was a big part too) so I think he never warmed to him due to that but he couldnt tell us since well he was a dog. Oh yikes I'm so sorry about your cat vomiting so much :( if it helps at all Storm did something similar. He has a habit of playing with his training pads and he'd just used one of them... then he played with it and well I won't say what happened but EWWWWWWWW

      I mean, I won't lose sleep over them, but I'm not gonna lie that when I rewatch my stuff, any mistakes are about the only thing I see!

    00:57 Don't forget to invite Poptarts to drink some beers too.
    19:45 What if part of the 2 million dollars was in coins? There could have been a bunch of coins in the bags, or even nicely sorted out in the metal containers. Obviously a part of the money clearly is cash, but how much would 2M weigh in pennies, or nickles, or dimes, or quarters? Half dollars?

      Admittedly, I did find myself momentarily contemplating while writing the script going to the extreme and calculating the weight of the stolen money in pennies, but I didn't feel that was necessary as we saw the bills splayed on the floor.
      To be fair, two million dollars in pennies would weigh around 8,000 tons, so if that had somehow been crammed into the armored truck, it would have been easier to forgive the cracked concrete floor.

    I love your videos they are very interesting and informative about how some designs get reused but you can’t argue that the episodes are good to watch I think the reason some of the costumes get reused is for callbacks to Scooby Doo where are you

      Thank you very much for your kind words! And it's true that, even in many of the worst episodes, they weren't boring to watch!
      You're being much more kind as to the reason behind reused character models than I would. The more you learn about how miserly animation studios were back in the day, the more obvious their cost-cutting attempts become.
      A duplicated costume just means nobody had to be paid to design a new one from scratch.

      I'm in the middle of a script for a Scooby-related side project that has to be finished before I can start my next RTV, but I'll still be doing my best to have a new one uploaded within two weeks.

    I love the Green Ghosts so I love the Technicolor Phantoms too. The 3 flavor colors were a nice original touch to using the same model. Maybe not original but at least they took from one of the best Scooby designs.
    Regarding the ice cream in the street, the manager says the ghosts had been causing chaos, including throwing ice cream in the street, which scared everyone away.
    Paint cans were probably left open from being surprised by the Mystery Machine crash. Same as eggs & bacon.
    Mr. Queens factory should be shut down, all product scrapped, and everything sanitized and sterilyzed before reopening. Scooby will cost him majorly.
    Speaking of cost, the museum was partly totalled by the Scooby gang.
    I feel like the legit security guard & the maintenance man, who were able to work in museum at night, should have skipped scaring people away. If they just broke into the mint during the night no one would be at the museum anyway. Dumb. And for worthless money. Dumber.

      Good points about the ice cream shenanigans, though unsure about dumping ice cream in the street to scare people away. Seems more like a recipe for involving the health department!

      Benedict Arnold was the only one I knew.
      I wonder how many people know the other two ONLY because of this episode?
      Probably 90%. I'm going to say definitely 90%.

    I will say after watching and re watching all your ranking videos the only one that so far got a perfect doo score was one of my favorite Scooby villains the space kook and even though you haven’t yet covered the rest of the Scooby doo show I do like that the second scariest villain in the Scooby doo villains gallery is currently the highest ranking villain in the Scooby doo show. The ghost of dr coffin was honestly creepy for me with his creepy laugh and the fact that he’s a insane asylum dr that went mad gave me the creeps yes the whole plan wasn’t truly well thought it didn’t matter much cause I think next to space kook he’s one the creepiest villains

      Skulls and skull faces never fail to frighten, but something has to be said for how Dr. Coffin reminds us of our own frail mortality.
