Oh, yes I agree. What is her name? She's hilarious with those "come-back" one liners, as when, recollecting a past conversation with the victim, she said how quickly her husband had died on his deathbed, that he was quick about everything he did.
@MykalMalloy Rubbish! The actress who played the part of the victim was far superior to any of the others. She had to play several different kinds of people and she did it well. The gossip woman was one dimensional. She only had one character to play. Even the sister and Bob (in the cowboy hat)…even the killer, presented more than one kind of person.
Title is "Five Angles on Murder". Excellent film! Had to be fun for the actress to play the part. And one of the two British Hermoines that were part of my childhood love of movies. I really enjoyed this one. The old movies always tell a good story. Acting was top notch. You're gonna like this film. Hermoine's in it! It has to be good! I was so intrigued by the name Hermoine as an American child born in 1957. I hadn't heard it before and the surnames of my Hermoines were fascinating to me, too. Baddeley and Gingold.
I have noticed in old black and white movie most character had a personality and distinct characteristic appearance voice face etc… Which is no mover in our current movie .
This movie is well worth watching. The cast is filled with English actors that were household names in England during their careers, but likely not well known by Americans (like me) except for Dirk Bogarde. The sailor is played by John McCallum from Australia who left for England for most of his career before returning to his homeland - spent all of WWII in the Australian army serving in New Guinea.
The leed actress was so good I almost thought it was two actresses. Fascinating to be drawn in to trying to discover who is this character really; a trashy opportunist or a classy lady? Captivating mystery. Excellent production and direction. All the actors were outstanding. I highly recommend this great film noir. 👍👍

@gailmarks3472 I don't get any ads. I watched the movie on RUclips in the Chrome app on a laptop linked to my TV. In Chrome I added the free extensi0n called a d b l o c k e r for y o u t u b e (ignore the spaces) and I never get ads during a movie. If you watch the movie on a smart TV you have to get YT Premium or suffer the ads.
Usually a supporting player, Scottish actor Duncan Macrae has a central role here as a chief, investigating officer. (Note: this commentator previously misidentified (~Oct/24) Australian actor John McCallum (who was married to Googie Withers) as the inspector until corrected by "nutmeg's" reply below. The whodunit is told via flashbacks of different characters; sometimes details overlap. Fun to see Anthony Dawson (uncredited) steal each scene in which he appears. All actors are excellent. Clean, clear copy! Thank you for posting.

Easily done. Gee I had forgotten that NUTMEG was an ID I was using. I'm compiling bios on Aussie actors, directors and film creatives etc who made it big outside Australia before the likes of Kidman, Blanchett and Gibson. A surprisingly large amount - both leads and character actors and high flying oscar nominated/ winning designers n technicians.

@@windycitykitty ~ I know what you mean. I've thought that about certain actors before, then gone on to watch them in something else, next thing I'm a fan! I highly recommend 'The Browning Version'' Jean Kent doesn't play a major role but the whole movie is outstanding in my opinion. It's a Terrance Rattigan (writer) I love all his work.
Sorry you didn't enjoy this classic film noir - I thought it's wonderful (Jean Kent is wonderful in anything!). You must appreciate, though, that the US is about 40 times the size of the UK and has a film industry to match: you have - and continue to - produce some of the finest quality films and TV series in history that we in the UK could only dream of and never hope to match. We have had to make do with the limited funding and filming resources available to us and all in all, this is one of the best of them. If you haven't already done so, please try and watch: - It Always Rains on Sundays - Brief Encounter I hope they'll change your mind. Kind regards.
You can turn on subtitles if the accent is too much, but then that may be too many words to read. And as a fellow American, I prefer productions where script & character is priority, which is much more common in British films vs Hollywood.
What a good actor that gossip woman is ! I completely forgot she was acting a part.

So good in every way and the retelling of their story by the different characters was brilliant.

What great photography. Crystalline black& white. Easy on the eye.

I had no commercials at all on this movie.
Neither did I. Probably bcz the channel is justnew.
There were too many adverts interrupting the story.
The land lady was in Brighton rock and she was good in that too

Yes to watching this
5 commercials in the first 26 minutes. I don't recommend this to anyone but it is a good movie.
Great acting, great mystery, not film noir.
Reflected Glory...
I believe this is one of the few roles (if not the only) that Dirk try on an American accent!!
Nifty little Point of View story, though the murderer was kinda obvious. Thanks.
I wonder if the writer of this film was influenced by Rashomon. Fantastic film if you have not seen it.
An example of the Rashomon Effect in writing. it opened in Aug. 1950 while this film in Oct the same year

Since Bob admitted his atrocious American accent was fake to his fiancee, strangely he persists in using it to her!
Thank you, technically an old police procedual though not a noir.
Well. Could be both. The Maltese Falcon was both. Police were investigating Miles murder, too! Those noir PIs were shadow cops, better at it actually.
Way too many adverts! Completely spoiled the flow. I gave up.
